Ugh! Work situation
I started my job a little over 1 year ago. I technically work for one department, but through that department I do work (exclusively) for another department. So, I have 2 bosses - the head of the department that I technically work for (my "real" boss) and the head of the department that I actually do work for. I am the only person in this kind of position. The guy I actually do perform work for and the other people in that department, I see and interact with on a regular basis. My "real" boss and the other people in that department I see rarely (and they kind of forget about me, which is mostly fine by me - except when they forgot to tell me they were going home early on Thanksgiving ).
So, a lot of the departments where I work usually do a holiday lunch - and I just found out that my 2 departments are having theirs on the same day . So, which one would you go to - the one being given by your "real" boss, who you have very little interaction with, or your "other" boss, who you see all the time and interact with regularly? (Or would you try to split it and run from one to the other, even though you wouldn't be able to spend much time at either?)
ETA: Just another thing to consider, my "real" boss is the one who controls raises, vacation time approvals etc.

Go to the one you work with and see all the time. You need a good relationship with the people you work with every day.

I think it depends on the type of Holiday party it is. It if a big party at a place then I would go to the one that you work with every day. You probably wouldn't be missed at the other. If it is a more intimate party like a luncheon or something, you need to go with your boss. He is the one who does your review, gives you raises and keeps you employed.

They are both at a restaurant and will each be about 10-15 people - neither one is a "big" place. My "real" boss - the one I rarely see, is the one who controls my raises etc, but the other one is the one who I deal with much more frequently

Why not just ask your main boss? Tell him the dilemma and see if they have a preference. Personally I would go to the one where I work with the people daily.

Re: Ugh! Work situation
I would go with my actual boss, get to know him better and network. Plus you can network with the others. I am kind of in that situation, I report directly to an exec but I manage projects for other departments. I am the only one in my role so I am in my own department sort of. I don't get the happy hour invites or departments offsites even though I work closely with a lot of the departments. A few weeks ago I was invited to an event and my boss was like oh nice to see you out. I had to tell him its because I was finally invited
People been more inclusive since then!
