I don't expect my guests to contribute anything if I'm inviting them over. Unless I specified that it was a potluck. So this wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Agree.

This is how I look at it.

It wouldn't bother me either if someone showed up with nothing to my house but I would never do it to someone else.

Everytime we go to someones house for dinner or whatnot we bring something...dessert, wine, soda, etc.

Re: Would you show up for Thanksgiving dinner with nothing in your hand?

I usually bring something but sometimes we are in a rush hopping from house to house in NY/NJ. We live in the DC area.

Our good friends have hosted us a few times (usually weekend of and not on Thanksgiving day). I bring gifts for their child usually vs food. I don't think our friends keep tabs of bringing things to dinners.

We host often. Some people bring something. Others don't. It is informal. I would prefer for people to come on time instead of being late. I notice that a lot of people pick something on the way and then are late. I always end up with a bunch of cakes or pies that I end up eating throughout the week. I don't need all the extra calories! We hosted a pre-thanksgiving gathering a few weeks ago and we had like 6 desserts that were barely touched. I already prepared dessert and BIL brought a cake all the way from NY to DC.

I always bring something - wine, dessert, something... I would be embarrassed to show up to someone's house empty handed.

Here's a question.. was the person male or female (because i think that makes a difference - men may not even realize that they 'should' bring something)

and in regards to what someone else posted about it being more commonplace in NY - yes, i think i agree. I didn't grow up here and while i usually do bring something if going to someone else's house, its not an immediate response for me the way it is for most people here.

I also don't understand the mentality of 'having' to bring something even when told that you don't have to. Why doesn't no mean no in this situation? If the host really doesn't want or need anything, why go against what they say? Aren't you really ending up imposing on them just to make yourself feel better?

I think sometimes people don't know how to say they really do want you to bring something as they feel odd naming things to bring. I appreciate when people bring things and sometimes I will just say dessert as I feel odd naming a particular item I actually might need, you know what I mean? lol. If someone makes a specialty, then I might ask if they can bring that.
