I don't expect my guests to contribute anything if I'm inviting them over. Unless I specified that it was a potluck. So this wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Agree.

Unless the host told me to absolutely, positively bring NOTHING I would come with at least a bottle of wine or a dessert because I feel weird showing up empty handed.

BUT when I am hosting, I wouldn't get annoyed with anyone if they came empty handed, especially if I didn't explicitly ask them to bring something.

Traditional etiquette is that you should be bring a hostess gift. It doesn't need to be something for the meal--that can actually be annoying(as mentioned above)--my mom always buys bakery cookies & never puts them out b/c someone will bring them, but she doesn't want to take the chance that they won't.

I don't always bring things to my parents or ILs for non holidays & for holidays we coordinate, but if it was someone I didn't really know, I would bring flowers or wine wine or something. It can even be something that is just a thank you, to be used later, like candles.

If they came with your in -laws though, maybe your in-laws said not to bring anything? Did they bring anything besides an extra guest?

Very, very close family I might not. Anyone else I'd absolutely bring something.

I always bring something, but don't mind if guests don't bring to me. I sometimes bring a bottle of wine or a box of chocolate and tell the hostess not to feel obligated to put it out, so they can enjoy it later if they want.

Funny story, a friend of mine was cleaning out an elderly relative's house after she died. She hosted Sunday dinners for years. When they cleaned out the house, she had an entire bedroom closet full of booze. People would bring a bottle for dinners and she lived alone and didn't drink outside of those Sunday dinners. It was hysterical.

If I was imposing on someone else (not my family) for a major holiday like that, there is no way I would show up empty handed. Even if I was your in-laws friend and they told me not to bring anything, I would still bring a candle or something as more of a "thanks for having me" gift.

I would not show up empty handed.

But I would never think a guest was rude or weird for not bringing something.

Same here. Just because *I* wouldn't do it doesn't mean that I would judge someone else as being rude if I invited them as a guest. I would just be glad they came!

YES, I would show up empty handed IF I was told not to bring a thing, because I think theie is nothing more rude then brining when told not to,
However, if I was not told the above or did not ask I would only bring none food items, or a box of candy so the homeowner can eat at a later date.

Yes, I agree with above poster, I would not think it rude, per say if they didn't bring something.

Re: Would you show up for Thanksgiving dinner with nothing in your hand?

it depends.

if it's family and i was told not to bring anything, i bring a smile and my appetite.

if it's the first time i come to your home, i am sure to bring something... even if it's a cheapo box of candy.

Re: Would you show up for Thanksgiving dinner with nothing in your hand?

Nope, I would never show up with nothing. I have never had anyone say don't bring anything. If they say don't worry about it, I will say, do you want me to just make some homemade brownies or something else that might go with the party. If they adamantly insisted they wanted nothing, then I wouldn't bring anything.

I have learned from talking to people online from other states than NY that NYer's always bring something while people in the midwest (IME) think no means no and don't ask further lol.

Re: Would you show up for Thanksgiving dinner with nothing in your hand?

Thanks for responses.

This was someone I don't really know, yet the second holiday at my house. It was Xmas last year. I wanted to see what everyone else would think, as I would never come without even a cheap box of candy to someone's house that I hardly knew and knowing they opened their home up to me and had me for holiday dinner. She came only a few minutes before we sat down, left with leftovers. It's just something I would never do. Since being a teenager, I was always told to never go empty handed, but I guess everyone is different.

I always bring something when I go to someone else's house that is hosting a dinner but I realize that I've never brought anything to a Thanksgiving dinner! It's either my parents hosting and I help with cooking, etc. or I'm at my in-laws in Florida so we aren't really able to bring anything. But from what you described the situation, she definitely should have brought something.

I usually always try to bring something but honestly I wouldn't be upset or offended if someone came to my house empty handed.

For close family, I might not bring anything, but for extended family I might. But, if people are coming to my house, I don't mind at all if they don't bring anything. In fact, it's easier if they don't so there isn't too much left over.

If I'm inviting someone to my house I don't expect them to bring anything. If they do that's very nice of them but I would never get upset it they didn't. I guess if we this upsets you then either tell them to bring something or don't invite them next time

Re: Would you show up for Thanksgiving dinner with nothing in your hand?

I would sooner die than show up somewhere empty handed.

If I host, I plan to provide all food and drink. So I would not be annoyed or offended if someone showed up empty handed to my home. However, I might be a little surprised, to be honest.

When someone asks what they can bring and I say nothing, if they insist, I tell him wine or dessert even if I have plenty because I know it makes people more comfortable to bring something to someone's home if they are a guest - and I want my guests to be comfortable!

Re: Would you show up for Thanksgiving dinner with nothing in your hand?

I pretty much always bring something when invited to someone else's house. At the same time I don't think it's a big deal to show up to a family dinner without something.

In the situation you mentioned, that person definitely should have brought something, anything, flowers, whatever. If I am invited into someone's home that I don't know well for a dinner, I would absolutely bring something to say thank you for welcoming me. It's not always rude not to bring something, but in your situation I think it's absolutely rude.
