How many Resume's do you have?

One of my coworkers says he updates his resume to the job he is going for.

Unless you are going for a different type of career, shouldn't your resume be the experiences and qualifications you have accomplished in the past so many years?

Wouldn't your cover letter change for the different jobs to cater to them?

I always tailor my resume to the job I am applying for - play up certain skills, highlight certain training, etc. Rewording things, really.

And not everyone looks at cover letters - in reviewing resumes last week with my boss, we didn't even print/read the cover letters, we wanted to get to the meat of the resume and didn't bother with the fluff.

I have two resumes: a teaching resume and a non-teaching resume. I have one main resume for both that has bullet points for everything I've accomplished. When I apply for a job, I take out the ones that don't pertain to the job I'm applying for.

For example, when I applied for my current job outside of teaching, they're not going to care that I have performed differentiated instruction in a classroom, or I have a firm understanding of Common Core standards.

My degree covers a host of possible careers. I could do a variety of jobs although my current career is quite niche. I recently applied for a job that I had most, if not all, of the requirements. But it's in a different field. So I had to switch things up. I always have to .. And it's a pain!!

In those moments, I soooo envy people who went for accounting or medicine with a straight - forward degree. Chat Icon

My DH used a resume writer and they supplied 3 different resumes since there was 3 different types of positions he would be applying for. The way certain things were highlighted or focused on were different based on the type of resume and position he was applying to.

Thanks everyone.

I see where more than one can apply. I did read that if you leave something out that might work for another job in the company you are going for, they might not see you have that experience.

I work in consulting and have a large range of industries I've worked in and the type of work I've done. I tailor my resume for the specific job I'm applying for because some of my experience just wouldn't be relevant. If I listed all the types of work I've done in my resume, it would be too long so I need to focus on what is relevant for the specific role.
