I know nothing about it. Just that 2 kids were doing something (making out? sex?). I think it was October.

Apparently someone recorded what they did and forwarded it.

..and it got forwarded etc.

I don't know the facts, just the basic of what I heard which is what is above. I am pretty sure the HS girl is in Kings Park, but the kid who did the video was in Smithtown SD.

Its ALL over the news, and will be THE story today.

Teach your kids about this stuff. It can and will come back to haunt them.

And what's crazy is that the school suspended ANYONE who had the video. Not if you forwarded it, but if it was sent to you and you deleted it.

Again, I am not saying what I have put here as fact. Just my basic understanding of what I have read in the moms groups, NOT the news.

I think they are throwing the book at them all to shake them up and set an example.

Good. They need to learn. Social Media scares the crap out of me. Can't wait to see what it will be like when my kids are older.

I can understand suspending the kids that sent it.
But the ones that received it. How do they know these kids even asked to see it and weren't just added to a group text?
As a parent I would be pissed.

So many questions.
How was the one kid able to record this if he wasn't the one involved in the sexual activity? Did him and other boy set this up without the girl knowing? Did the girl know?

I know 2 kids were arrested but they aren't saying who. I would imagine both boys.

The Newsday article says students who only received it got less days suspension, I think one, bc they didn't report it add they should have. I think they are making am example which is fine with me. The video was going around for 10 days with kids huddled around phones watching in the cafeteria. Terrible.

It's scary stuff. My SS is 17 and we talked to him about it last night. We live very close to where this happened - and aside from that, it is going on everywhere, across the country (There are news stories about this is so many different states right now) It's one thing if a kid is actively involved in sexting, but I am at a loss as to what to do if my SS received a sext without even knowing what it was until he opened it. He's a very good kid, but it's so easy to get caught up in this, without even knowing it (and he is 17, which means all common sense could go out the window at any moment lol). Of course we told him to never get involved in this kind of thing and to NEVER request any pics/sexts, but DH and I are really clueless as to what to tell him the right thing to do is if he ever got a text like that. Yes, delete it, but that wouldn't protect him from being suspended like the kids in KP who received the text - even if he truly was just an innocent recipient of that kind of text. Very scary and confusing

I agree.

I'm so glad this stuff didn't exist when I was a kid. It was bad enough with aol!

Ok..yeah that makes sense. If they didn't, they should have at least reported it.

If not to the school then at least to their parents.

I personally don't think it was right to suspend all the kids who simply received it. Suspension goes on your record and can affect college applications. If they can prove they didn't forward it, they shouldn't be suspended. All the kids these days are in group texts. My high school aged daughter has about 5 or more going on at any given time. One for student government, one for honor society, one with just her best friends, etc. I'd be furious if someone sent something in a group text and my daughter got suspended for just receiving it.

A more important lesson from all of this is that anything you put out there is out there forever. Period. It will come back to haunt you.

Unfortunately, these videos, nudes photos, etc, are all too common these days. Way, way more than you think.

Ah, the good ol' AOL days. LOL. Now with Snap Chat, Droid Zap and god knows what else, it is BAD. I think suspending ALL the kids whether or not they sent or received it sets a good example. Scare them a little bit. Teach them a good lesson.

Sorry, but I'd be really angry if my 17 yr old SS was sent something that he had NOTHING to do with and wound up getting suspended. If it was something that he had nothing to do with and had no control over someone sending it to him and then it could affect his college acceptances or worse - I'd be PI$$ED! It's one thing for anyone who was actively involved, forwarded it etc, but for those kids who didn't request it be sent to them, didn't have anything to do with it and now they could have serious consequences - THAT's what is scary about social media

BUT...maybe it should be a wake up call to these kids that EVERY action has a consequence and that maybe they should rethink who their friends are and their values if they would forward something like this to your (general) kids.

I would be pissed off if my child got suspended for receiving a text message they never asked for. Especially since it would be on her permanent record and ruin her chances for certain colleges. I can see maybe doing something to scare them but it should not ruin their permanent record. This is why I don't like children having cell phones. Everything they do on there that you don't see. I cant always be there to read what they are doing. That is why children should only be given a basic pay by phone only. Once they reach 16 or 17 and prove to me they are now responsible then maybe I will upgrade to an I phone or Android. I survived without one growing up and so will my daughters. They will hate me probably, but Social media and all the bullying that happens because of it is just crazy.

These group chats are often school club / sports team related. So if someone on the football team forwards to the whole team group chat, they should all be suspended. They may not necessarily be "friends", yet everyone got it. How is a kid supposed to avoid that?

It is not fair to those who only received the text to have a permanent mark on their school record which could affect college admission. If it was my daughter I would be fighting it. Technology is very scary especially in the hands on immature teenagers. I support an example being made of the ones who taped the incident and forwarded it...

While I understand your intention (as was mine before my kids got older), smart phones are almost impossible to avoid at the high school level. They are even required to have certain apps for some classes. Even parents are requested to have the same apps. Homework assignment and test reminders are sent by teachers via apps now. It's insane how technologically dependent we are as a society. Nothing comes home on paper anymore. Nothing. You cannot be without a home computer as well, unless you want to cart your kid to the library every single night.

Kids don't always think. MY SS truly is a good kid who has never gotten in to trouble. His friends are good kids. None of that means that he could wind up having someone send a sext to him. What is he supposed to wake up to? He gets good grades, has a job, has good friends, is looking forward to college. I really can't imagine that you would think YOUR kid should be held accountable for what someone else does. Trust me when I say, I am all about accountability and let me SS know all the time that he is responsible for his actions - his grades will determine what college he gets into, his motivation to finish his Eagle Scout project is what will get him there; etc. I am so not one of those people who would say "not my kid" if he did something wrong or something he should be held accountable for. But, there is no way for him to protect himself from what others might do - he already has a GOOD group of friends. Should he just isolate himself so that nothing bad ever happens? I think you are being very unrealistic.

I totally get the whole "kids didn't report it" but I agree with this, imo. A slap on the wrist to those who received it? Ok. Suspension? Uncalled for.

Exactly. If all we teach the "nice kids" is to not get involved then this is going to keep happening. If they learn that they have a responsibility to stand up against it then maybe we will get somewhere.

I don't know how old this girl was but even if she was 14 that's somebody's daughter. What if she was 12? Then would you expect them to report it? What if she were younger? I'm not saying I think she was but at some point we'd all agree that it needs to be stopped do why not at any age? If someone reported it 10 days ago it wouldn't be anywhere near this out of control. How many kids just ignored it while it continued to be passed around?

I do get what your saying. But I wanted to throw out there that this was not even someone from their school that they would recognize. There is a ton of porn just floating around on the web, how do they know this is really a 14 year old from Smithtown unless they know her personally? If it were someone in their own school that they all know, I would think that someone would have reported it sooner. Not defending anything, just trying to get a different perspective.

The kids who deleted probably though they were doing the right thing. Some of them may have even told the girl involved. They may have thought that reporting it would be even more embarrassing for the girl.

I don't think they should be punished unless it is clearly spelled out in their code of conduct. I think the kids should be taught about how to avoid/handle these situations.

I'm a parent. I say let them all get suspended. Even if they received it they should have gone to their parents or a school official. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to be in possession of video of underage people having sex. Sucks but we all have to learn our lessons in life as we all did when we were younger...

The concept of all of this is well and good. I totally agree with you. The reality of the situation is nobody wants to rat on their friends or be involved at all. That is the reality at any age. Unless it directly effects YOU, how often do you get involved in a messy or even illegal situation pertaining to your peers? Do we report our friends who recreationally use drugs? Drive intoxicated? Cheat on their taxes? Probably not. So why would we expect teenagers to tell on their peers? We would like to think and hope that they would but I think kids are too immature, worried about themselves, their own reps and the social consequences to be "expected" to report it.

I have a 16 year old SD. We have had repeated conversations with her about this type of thing ever since she got a phone. My SD is a great kid. She does not like it when kids are shamed or bullied or embarrassed at school. She always sticks up for those who can't for themselves. She's very sensitive to that. I know if she got a video like that she would never pass it along. That being said, we would be furious if she was suspended for receiving the video. It would cause her to miss school, miss sports, miss her clubs and goes on her record which could jeopardize her college applications. That's not fair. It's definitely not fair to the girl in the video that she is being so exposed without her knowledge or consent but I don't think that should extend to schoolmates who did not voluntarily participate in this poor girl's humiliation.
