Did I make a mistake?
So, you all may remember that I recently left one job for a new one closer to home that seemed like it was going to be a great environment bringing new challenges. I am terrified I made a huge mistake. I don't like to micromanage, nor do I believe you need to be a nasty b!tch to be an effective manager. Not only have unrealistic expectations been placed on me but I was told the other day that I need "to become the most hated person in the office". I don't manage like that, I don't believe that creating a negative work environment is the best or most effective way to manage. Will it get immediate results? Sure, probably, or you'll just get a bunch of people quitting. Which leads me to the long term effects. People don't want to work in negative workplaces. Even if you do get immediate results, they won't be long lasting because those people will leave.
I was told some of the "pet projects" as they had been presented to me at the interview and shortly after me being hired - starting up some services in office. About a month later, while still learning the office, and fixing the other very immediate problems of staffing and inadequate performance, I was asked why they weren't don't yet. What?!?!?!
I knew this practice was going to be a new challenge but never in a million years did I think after 2 months I would be afraid of being fired for, well, not making miracles happen quite honestly. I'm working my a$$ off, I don't spend my day online (clearly since I'm never here anymore). I actually caught some major problems with billing that I am fixing and starting arbitrations (to do with no fault billing) that will bring them in close half a million dollars over the next year. And all I get is why isn't this better and you have to be the most hated person in the practice and you need to get this done and that done, oh and ignore every patient that comes to your desk because we positioned your desk in the worst possible place! I just have never felt so threatened with my job before. I'm not used to being made to feel like this (basically like a failure).
Thank you. Vent over.

I can sympathize. I also work in healthcare (different capacity though) and nothing is ever good enough. I do not report directly into MDs, but I work very closely with lots of doctors and some of them can be entirely unreasonable. I can't tell you how many toddler level tantrums I have seen MDs throw over things out of anyone's control. Seriously, I could tell you things that would make your jaw drop. The only advice I can give is to make them happy when you can and hope they remember it when things don't go their way.
I know its hard but you need to not let it get to you outside of work. Accept that the situation stinks, show up, collect your paycheck and then go home. You will drive yourself insane otherwise.

Re: Did I make a mistake?
I would focus on one or two of their immediate concerns and get those to do tasks done. While you are doing other things right, they have already communicated their top desires to you. I would focus on them immediately and then knock their other concerns off of the list. Fire out what their top priority is, and do that.

I have no advice but if your office needs help with No Fault Arbs, that's my department at the law office that I work at.

Did I make a mistake?
I am seriously having a panic attack over here and losing sleep now. I'm trying all my tried and true techniques but they aren't working, lol.

I am so sorry. It must be a horrible feeling. Take a deep breath and focus on the tasks and try not to let the negativity affect you. I am sure that you are doing and awesome job!
Have you established bonds with any co-workers that maybe you can discuss these issues with? It might help to get advice from others that are more familiar with the environment.

I'm so sorry Jess that this is happening. You need to feel happy with your career and not worried about losing it every second. Losing sleep isn't good either. I will pray that things get better for you!

Re: Did I make a mistake?
I hope things get better, but if not, maybe you can sending your resumes out to positions elsewhere in your field? I know what it's like to work in a stressful work environment (before I switched careers) so I feel for you.
