Recovery from concussion?

If anyone had a concussion can you describe your recovery for me? How long did it take? Do symptoms diminish before they go away?

I was in a car accident 2 1/2 weeks ago, and while some symptoms are slowly getting better, I now have a pretty consistent headache. I also really can't move my neck, so it might be from that??

Thank you

Re: Recovery from concussion?

Did you have a scan of your brain/head??

I suffered a concussion in November 2013.

I had to literally lay in bed and all I did was sleep for about six days STRAIGHT. I only got up to pee and shower.

I needed constant rest and sleep. Everyone is different but you need to make a follow up appointment with a neurologist. Concussions are mild brain injuries, they are serious and I would recommend a scan if one wasn't already done and if one was, I would go for a follow up.

I hope that helps. Take care of yourself!!

Recovery from concussion?

I would def get it checked out by a neurologist. Head injuries can be serious even if you think it's minor. Hope you feel better soon

I had a minor concussion a few years ago and it took well over a year for the dizzy spells to finally go away.

Oh my goodness!!!

Yes, I am under the care of a neurologist, had mri's done on Sunday. The dr said that he is confident they won't show anything, but did them to be safe.

Having 4 kids makes it extremely hard to lay in bed all day. I do have help, but not all day long.

If I have to sustain a conversation for more than say 5 minutes my head will start to throb.

Yesterday I was speaking to another person in my profession at the chiropractors, I had so much trouble saying what I wanted to say... Feel like my brain has been too rested so to speak Chat Icon

Its one of the most frustrating things to recover from, b/c you feel like you have no brain control sometimes.

Recovery from concussion?

I had a concussion in 2012 due to a work injury. I spent a month throwing up periodically and had constant dizzy spells. I has completely altered my life. I now get motion sickness all the time, I cannot go out on my in laws boat- something I loved, I can barely tolerate a huge ferry. For me as long as I'm ok, I have learned my triggers of the chronic vertigo/ dizziness as a result of the concussion and I'm grateful I'm ok.
Hang in there and as DaniJude said- follow up with neurology it's important to monitor

Re: Recovery from concussion?

I had one in 2009 from a car accident. I'm still living with permanent issues Bc of it. My word finding skills are very poor (like a word is at the tip of my tongue and it takes me awhile to get it, if I ever do, and sometimes it's an easy word where I feel so dumb). I get ringing in my ears, which then sets off vertigo sometimes. My memory is not what it used to be, I constantly lose stuff. I also get frustrated a lot easier now, and develop migraines on and off.

By working with a neurologist, I've learned "coping" mechanisms Bc mine are permanent since I waited too long. I hope your able to get the help you need and are able to reverse some things!

Omg I'm so sorry. When you said you waited too long, do you mean to see a neurologist? How will I know if I have to start therapy? I actually started crying after my appt and speaking to that woman because I felt so stupid :(

I'm sorry. That is terrible that you still have the effects of it. Do you know what "rating" your concussion was?

Yes, I didn't see a neuro until I believe 2011. Because I hit my head I damaged my neck and caused nerve damage in my arms, so I kept seeing pain management doctors. The only reason I found out that I had a concussion was Bc I finally went to a neuropsychologist to deal with my driving issues (I wouldn't get behind the wheel every again, even though I wasn't driving) and he explained that my hazy feeling and outer body experience was from a concussion and started sending me to other doctors and getting more tests.

Because I didn't get treatments early, I wouldn't go by me, I'm not sure how you would know if you need therapy, but I'm sure the neuro should be able to assist you with next steps.

I'm so sorry you felt like that Chat Icon it's not fair, but know that the professionals are so aware of the signs that they understand you can't help it. I'll be honest and say it's very hard to speak to non professionals about it, Bc people don't get it,i had to quit my job Bc of it and I can't imagine working in my field of study again. I wish you luck though and if you ever need to talk FM me! I totally understand and hope you have better results than myself, it's great that you are being so proactive!

Re: Recovery from concussion?

I had a concussion in high school and was fine a day or so later. It obviously was a mild one. One of my students had a bad one last year and was out of school and dance for almost two months. She had constant headaches and dizziness for a while. When she returned to dance she wore noise canceling headphones for a bit too.

Yes, noise is the biggest contributor for me. I hear everything. If too much is going on it makes me feel crazy.

Re: Recovery from concussion?

I had a concussion about two years ago.

It took about a month for the major symptoms to go away, like fatigue, poor short term memory, concentration problems and headaches. I still feel like I have some word finding and memory issues. I wish I saw a neurologist at the time, but the ER never mentioned this nor recommended cognitive rest, which I think may have helped.

I hope you feel better soon.
