Re: STAR question

Can someone explain this like I'm 5?
So when I had applied for star, I just filled out some forms and handed it over to the town. I got approved. That was it.
I never had to pay a fee.
I know you can try to have someone value your property to lower your taxes, and if they do, you owe them a cut of the winnings. I also know you can try to do this yourself.
So what's the scam that they do? I'm curious.
You're talking about 2 separate things. One is the actual application you did for STAR for free.
The other is using a company to grieve your taxes, and yes, you have to pay usually 50% of your savings to them to do it.

STAR question
We recently bought a house so I knew to be on the lookout for this scam. We got a letter with an application and letter saying you can do this yourself or they can do it for you. I don't remember if they mentioned cost. They also include the application and it looks generic but actually gets mailed to the company. I shredded all and went to TOH and printed my own Star application.

STAR question
I think more and more people are becoming savy about this. I knew to look out for it from the other thread but we had an older woman from the neighborhood we moved into (who told Dh she worked for the town) tell us that we should be wary of this as well.
