X-Post from Careers - Civil Service Jobs
Hi All -
Curious to know more about Civil Service Jobs. I don't know much, and just want to understand the types of opportunities available, benefits etc. for those that have these positions.
I was glancing over suffolk counties site:
https://apps2.suffolkcountyny.gov/civilservice/efile/default.aspx
Am I right in understanding that you can only apply and take the test for the jobs that have current exams scheduled? Or is there a general test available? Can you also apply for jobs with the state? Or even Nassau if you're not a resident?
Sorry, I probably sound so uninformed...but I would appreciate any insight or even a private FM about your knowledge, experience, etc...I know it's not an easy process and very difficult to "get in" so I just want to know how I should go about it.
For me, I have been working for a Fortune 500 company since college. I am just done with corporate work. I need a change.

bumping :)
I applied to take a test for an Institute Steward. Test is on December 5th.
How long does it typically take to hear if you make the minimum qualifications and are approved to take the test?

I'm not super familiar with most exams - I can tell you that I took the Librarian I exam a few years ago and my score took 6 months to come in. I'm not sure if that's standard or not.

Yikes. But this seems to be everything I am hearing. I know even if I take the test and get a passing decent score, it could still take years before I hear anything too.

I took the test... got my score 6 months later. In that time I decided that I did NOT want to be a librarian. Lo and behold TWO years later I started getting letters from libraries... so, it DOES take awhile.

There is a state civil service website too. Most of Nassau has residency restrictions. It takes about 6 months to get your scores back.

I took a Nassau Clerk/Typist Test May 2013. I started getting some letters July 2014 (mostly for part time) and then this past summer started getting alot more.
It's most certainly not a quick process unless you have a very high score. I had an 85
