Thanks everyone. Was just curious about individual salaries. That is all. Didn't think I was out of the ordinary as many people don't talk about it but wonder what other people make.

I understand 100%. I am always very curious as most people I know live it up or at least it appears that way!
I always assume they are debt free as most seem so responsible, but I guess you never know how people do it. I also believe a lot have family help and get handouts, down payments, etc. I think you need another poll for $100-200k in increments. Childcare is also another lifestyle changer. For example, we pay $3k per month for childcare!

Well since I'm a SAHM I make 0 but, by not including bonuses your poll is pretty meaningless for many industries. In some industries the bonus is equal to or more than the salary and likely over even your highest category.

Funny. I was just thinking this. There are sales jobs that have small base salaries but their bonuses triple their actual salary

I get what you are asking OP. Just a general question.

Re: How much is your Salary?

Wow, I'm surprised more than a third of the responses on the poll are over 100K! That's awesome, I hope one day (after a few promotions) I can be a high earner like that. Right now, I make approx 60K, with a few salary step increases left until I hit the max pay in my current title. DH has a similar salary, but makes a few thousand more than I do because of extra work he does. Fortunately we don't have a ton of debt, but we try to live below our means as much as we can.

How much is your Salary?

We hope one day to make much more. Right now dh and I combined make about 110k. We live well below our means, managed to buy a house, have 2 new cars and lots of student loans. We don't use credit cards and save 20% of our income monthly Salary is all relative to your lifestyle.
We one day hope to each make a lot more and plan to do more traveling with that extra $$$

Re: How much is your Salary?

I feel like these polls are so relative...some people might make a huge salary but work a million hours while someone else might make a lower salary and work much less hours...some jobs are super stressful or carry over into non work hours while others can be left at the door...I try not to read too much into what others are making...I think comparing what others in your position are making is helpful but looking at simply salaries doesn't really offer you much info about how that money is attained and what the stipulations are to get to it.

This. You can't compare just on salary alone. I make a lot but I went to law school have tons of student loans and am into my 40s. So yes I will make more than somone who is in a differnt field or just starting out.

We all make career choices in our life. I didn't pick mine because I wanted to make tons of money...I picked mine because this is what I wanted to do with my life. The amount of money we make doesn't define us.... Unless you let it define you.
Be confident in the choices you make and don't compare to others!!!

I tried creating a new poll to include the $100K increments but it seems my ipad doesnt allow for the Poll options to show...either way, it does vary a lot when one factors in bonuses (especially those working in finance) and also accounting for HHI is much more accurate as many here have 0 incomes or part time jobs w lower salaries because they are SAHM and their DHs are the ones bringing home the bacon.

I agree. It is sad though when you do see what the person does for the salary and it is not much more than you do or even less.

Who cares what anyone eles makes. If I'm not happy with my salary (which I am) I would figure out how to make more money.

You shouldn't...

Everything is relative. Just because someone makes more $$ doesn't mean they are better off financially and/or more happy then someone who makes less.

At the end of the day if you are able to live off your salary and are happy with your job, that is all that mattersChat Icon

I think the problem is that some people put in a long amount of time at jobs, work their butts off and try to move ahead and never do. Sometimes the pro's of the job overtake the con's and they stay. When they find out how much others make by not fighting as hard for promotions and not working as hard, it is depressing.

I was sorely taken advantage of at my old job. I am in niche industry and not a lot of people do what I do and do it well. And VERY few are women. (I am in a niche technology field in a law firm).

I started out at company A at $35k with NO experience. They gave me some raises but it became stagnant at ABOUT $50k or so. No raise in 4+ years. I was ABSOLUTLY being taken advantage of. And yes, it sucked.

I got a call from a recruiter and ended up getting a job at a law firm. I am appreciated which means a lot. And I got a good salary boost to boot. I know everyone cant leave their jobs or switch companies. I would say that keep your eyes and ears open. I got a call from a recruiter on LinkedIn. So keep your profile up to date. You never know.

I agree. If I included my bonuses (which weren't even all that great this year) it would bump me into the next category of the poll

I just wanted to comment on "working hard" and moving ahead.

Let me just preface this by saying that sometimes, despite ALL other factors, a person is in a field that is just tough and doesn't offer a lot of potential for growth and big incomes. I totally get that. 100%. No question.

But in general, I do think some people (NOT directed at anyone on this thread) make the simplistic correlation that the the "harder" you work the more you should be paid. I think that many people, if not most people, "work hard" at their job.............I don't doubt that for a minute. But that being said, there is more to career success than just "working hard". I've seen this firsthand with my DH. Even he will tell you, working hard is the easy part. It's everything else that is the challenge.

Aside from working hard, there are factors such as:

- your people skills
- your organizational skills
- your task management skills
- your leadership skills
- your years of experience
- your level of expertise
- your professionalism
- Your presentation skills
- your communication skills
- your teamwork ability
- your ability to work under pressure
- your problem solving abilities
- your specialization within your field
- your visibility within the company
- how people within your company perceive you

.....................and SO many more that ALL play a TREMENDOUS (and crucial) role in one's career success.

My DH has 8-10 electrical engineers that directly report to him and while many of them are "hard workers" and do a really good job they don't possess enough of the other skills necessary to excel into the big money roles within his company. And there is NOTHING wrong with that, it doesn't in any way discount their hard work and the role they play in the company's success. It's just that only a very select few people (in any field) will really have what it takes to be in those upper management, big $$$ roles such as Manager, Director, VP, or even CEO. That is why these positions with bigger salaries are harder to come by and harder to get.

Being a hard worker is a wonderful AND admirable attribute but it's not the only thing needed to get the big promotions and the big money. Being hard working alone won't be enough to propel your career forward. While I understand that every career field is different, I think you'll find this to be the case in most circumstances.

Anyway, I just wanted to comment because I so often see people saying they "work so hard" but it doesn't get them anywhere. I just think sometimes people tend to overlook the other things that go into excelling within a chosen career path. That's all. Chat Icon
