What charities do you support?
I basically donate to everyone. Well, whenever someone asks. I always give the extra $1 at checkout too. But I don't have a charity that is near and dear to my heart. I don't volunteer my time regularly either, not because I don't want to, but I guess I am guilty of taking things for granted....
Do you have a charity that is near and dear to your heart? If so, what and why?
A friend of mine is helping to start an organization that helps single mom's fighting breast cancer (www.raysofhopefoundation.net). I thought that was truly adminarable. It got me thinking about this...

Almost none. The money given, IMHO, NEVER EVER gets to where its intended.
I only give to St Judes, I give to local food pantries and I give to local charities.
Never to the big ones. ESPECUALLY during a "tragedy" "flood" "earthquake" etc. With the lower 9th ward still empty after Katrina, and the FDNY (et al) not having funding (through those charities asking for donations) for health I will never give to them again.
(please note that the Zadroga fund is different form the red cross asking for money for relief for the workers for 9/11).

Re: What charities do you support?
St. Judes: because I can't even image having a sick child and no money to get them the best care possible
Memorial Sloan Kettering: In memory of DH's mom who died of cancer when he was a teenager
Long Island Cares: Because no one should be hungry, especially kids. I donate goods, time and money to them. I also like to give locally
My local church: food and toy drives/adopt a family type functions because I believe in helping as locally as possible

This exactly. Sandy really helped shape my cynicism of charity. I prefer to give to give $ to individuals and smaller causes where I have a better idea of how a person in need will be helped directly. I am sure there are great charities out there but it takes a lot of research for me to contribute.

Re: What charities do you support?
First Descents - I'll be fundraising for them soon. They take young adult cancer patients and survivors out for all-expense paid adventures. I went on a weeklong trip kayaking in Montana with them in August and it was, by far, one of the coolest experiences of my life.
Stupid Cancer - another young adult cancer group; they're locally based and I found a great amount of camaraderie with other people I met through the group. They are really fantastic.
I've yet to find a breast cancer organization that puts more money toward research and less money toward marketing awareness and in the higher ups' pockets. I would love to work with one/donate to one since I'm a survivor. If anyone knows of any, please post the name of the organizations and I'll do some research on their practices.

Re: What charities do you support?
COPS - Concerns of Police Survivors (they help the children of police officers killed in the line of duty)
International Brain Research Foundation - a nonprofit who treats people with traumatic brain injuries, mostly veterans coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan with head injuries... As well as police and fire personnel who suffer head injuries while at work.
ASPCA - anything helping animals is great but I love the ASPCA.

Re: What charities do you support?
We donate monthly to two: hearts united for animals I like what they do and the changes in animal care against puppy mills they try to make. and to Wounded Warrior Project. Yearly to MSK. When people we know ask, we agree to St. Jude's, JDRF and Susan G. Komen. We'll donate to a few others on a whim but it's not consistent.

Re: What charities do you support?
For those of you looking for a worthwhile Breast Cancer organization, please consider donating to the Pennies in Action Fund at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA - they're doing amazing things. Pennies in Action fully supports Dr. Brian Czerniecki and his breast cancer research vaccine that has a 10 year proven track record of preventing breast cancer recurrence. A family member (through marriage) was diagnosed with stage 2 and stage 3 breast cancer at 36 years old & was lucky enough to take part in their clinical trials - she is doing fabulous! You can read her story here (just scroll down a bit). PIA is the only BC charity that I will donate to because the $ is going towards really promising research!
ETA: I also donate regularly to the Leukemia & Lymphoma society (lots of family members of mine have suffered from Lymphoma & my mother has Leukemia) & St. Jude's.

Re: What charities do you support?
Sophia's Cure - started by a formerly active LIFer whose daughter was diagnosed with SMA while she was an infant. I remember following their story as Sophia was diagnosed shortly after I joined LIF and I've been following their story ever since. It hit close to home for me because a little boy in my class when I worked in daycare had also been diagnosed. Babies w/ Type 1, which Sophia has, don't usually live past 2 but she is now 6 years old!

Re: What charities do you support?
Generally more local causes.
I also have mixed feelings about GoFundMe.
With that, it depends what and who, honestly.
There's someone I know that I made a small donation to, but they are now up to posting 3 or more times a day now asking for $$$.
Maybe things are really that bad, but I'm also skeptical, primarily because I've seen many people truly in need and they don't ask for money like that.

Thanks! I'm glad that you are too!!
Barb believes so much in Dr. Czerniecki's work that in 2014 she started a huge week long fundraising event in her town in PA called "Paint Pittston Pink" (you can find it on Facebook). They raised so much money last year ($30,000!!) that she had to organize & register as a 501c3 charity (all of the money raised by PPP goes directly to Pennies in Action)! It's now an annual thing that took place this past weekend - we're all waiting on the totals now. There are dozens of events (bar nights, silent auctions, paint & sip events, races, walks, merchandise sales, etc. so it takes a while. Unfortunately we haven't made it to one yet because of school/work, but it's amazing & the work that she's doing for the cause is amazing. She makes me feel lazy lol
Anyways, I'll stop gushing, but I'm always encouraging people to check out PPP and, more specifically, Pennies in Action now. Unlike some of the other, larger charities, you know that your money is going directly to fund actual, promising research and not huge amounts of overhead, executive salaries & litigation. I feel like my money is actually helping to make a difference with the PIA fund.

I give to the VA, a local soup kitchen, visiting nurses, and heartworks. Heartworks is a nj charity that helps local families in need that was started after 9/11. They help sick and emergency cases.
