To be clear: I never said anything judgmental about the man OR the lady. I simply asked if *I* had done something wrong, because yes of course I've taken the LIRR before but I've never been a regular commuter and I wasn't sure if this was common or accepted practice.
Neither the man or woman involved were rude to me at all, I just felt bad at the end when I learned that I had "taken" someone's seat.

wanted to add, I take the train everyday. its not the norm to save a seat that I can see, but, there is nothing wrong with trying. he did and you needed the seat, he gave it to you.
I don't think what his friend said to him was wrong, what else was she going to say.
