Saving a seat on an AM LIRR train to Penn?
Is this a thing? I take the train to the city as of a few weeks ago for a new job. I get on at the last stop before the train goes express to Penn. It is a packed train. This morning I got on, saw a seat, asked the guy on the aisle if I could sit down. He sighed and got up for me to sit. 30 seconds later a woman came up, saw me, said "oh, okay, I guess I'll see you later," and left.
When we got to Penn the guy got up early to stand by the door. The two women across from us (4 seater) were nice and we had been chatting, and they mentioned that he saves the seat for that woman every morning.
So then I kinda felt bad but...is this like a legit thing? It's such a packed train I just...can you save seats like that?

No way. I'd sit there intentionally every day.
Who does that!?

I agree. You can't save a seat, it's unfair to the other passengers.

He got up when you asked. If he said no that's one thing. He was trying to save a seat but we all know that never works during rush hour. Don't see the big deal

If he got up and let you sit, I don't see the issue ..........if he had said 'no, i'm saving the seat' THAT would have been a problem. A lot of the time people won't sit in the 4th seat of a 4 seater w/ 3 others already there b/c they don't want to be squished in .....so she propbably has the seat free when she gets on - but, not today - don't feel bad at all !!! You pay a small fortune like the rest of us !

You can't do it on a packed train but I've done it for my husband or a friend coming home in the evening from Penn. I don't think its a big deal if there are other empty seats. eta: other empties other than middle or 6 seater so...like window for window haha.

There are no saving seats unless the person just got up to go to the bathroom or something. Other than that, all seats are game.

No, this isn't a high school cafeteria, every man/woman for themselves.
At least he didn't give you a hard time.

Hells no. I have seen people try to do this on packed trains, and it always infuriates me.
It always reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Elaine is trying to save seats at the movies.

Of course you're not supposed to save seats. You're not really supposed to take up multiple seats, push people, talk loudly, bring enough luggage for a trip around the world, eat a four course meal, drink a 12 pack, etc but does that stop anyone? I'm surprised this guy didn't say anything to you- he must be one of the finer passengers.
If you couldn't tell, I hate the LIRR with a burning passion.

That infuriates me. Happened to me a few times when I used to work in the city. "Sorry someone is sitting here". WTF!

This is just another reason why my blood pressure goes up the second I get on the train! There is no saving seats. I don't even ask if I can sit anymore, I just politely say excuse me and squeeze past into middle seat.

No, that's not normal.
That lady he was trying to save the seat for seems like a real gem. Give the guy a break, how can you expect him to save a seat for you during rush hour??? What a beeetch.

Re: Saving a seat on an AM LIRR train to Penn?
I think that is very rude. It's the LIRR, not a school bus! There are sections on my train where groups of people sit. I try to avoid their cars as they are very Loud and annoying in the morning! Lol

LOL, I really don't see how the lady was being a ***** at all. I think this post is hilarious. The guy gave up the seat, the lady walked away. Where is the problem again?

you took the words right out of my mouth. I take the train everyday, and while I don't save seats. I have moved seats (if I can) to allow a husband/wife team that I see everyday sit together .

Saying "I guess I'll see you later" sounds like a passive aggressive comment. Like she's giving him shit for giving up her seat.
That's just the way I intepreted the story from OP. Maybe the lady is the sweetest person on Earth who volunteers in her spare time and rescues dogs from shelters. Who knows, who cares! She just came off like a beeetch to me

Re: Saving a seat on an AM LIRR train to Penn?
Exactly!! I thought it was just me, I don't understand everyone's agitation. He just tried to save his friend a seat, big deal. Ultimately, he gave up the seat to the OP without a fight so I don't see the issue here.
In general thought, trying to "save a seat" during rush hour on the LIRR is pretty much an impossible task, I wouldn't even attempt it!
