Bicycle riders
Looking for advice on purchasing a new or used bike. Would like to do trails, not just roads. Any tips for purchasing one? Any features that you find good or unnecessary?

Re: Bicycle riders
I'm a cyclist! Sounds like a hybrid or even a mountain bike might be best for you but how far do you think you'd be interesting in riding? And how much are you looking to spend? And what area are you located in? I live in NYC but know of a few good reputable bike stores on LI.

I agree it sounds like a hybrid would fit your needs. The best advice I can give is to test drive the bike before you buy it. It really helps to get a feel for the bike. Brands cycle and fitness in Wantah has a good selection and they have been around a long time. Robert's bikes in Flushing has also been around a long time and used to have a decent selection--I live in Westchester now so it has been several years since I have been to a bike shop on LI.

Re: Bicycle riders
I would suggest going to a bike shop, telling them how/where you want to ride and your budget. They can suggest appropriate bikes as well as make sure you get the right frame size for you. They will also help you maintain it properly.
I can recommend Chuck at Adams Cyclery in East Northport. He is very knowledgeable and helpful. I bought my mountain bike (Trek Cali) from him earlier this year. I had an accident on a trail in May and bent my wheel. I took it to Chuck and even though they weren't able to repair it, he was able to get me a replacement in a couple of days.
And, most importantly, PLEASE wear a helmet! Last weekend I participated in a trail use survey for the state and of the 550 people who I counted on one particular path, almost 300 were NOT wearing helmets.

Re: Bicycle riders
A hybrid would be good for your purposes.
One thing I wish I had done was compare weights of different bicycles. I find my bike really heavy and it's even heavier when we do overnight bike trips because of my luggage.
We are currently shopping for new bikes

This scares the crap out of me. I witness so many crashes in Central Park but than goodness, all the ones I've seen, the rider had a helmet on. Another thing that is important that a lot of riders that wear helmets don't know is how tight the strap should be--I've seen kids riding with a helmet but the strap is loose. Scary how many people don't wear helmets when you know how bad the consequences can be without one!
