It's an f'ing pacifier.

I could not imagine what the F a dummy was and why it's so controversial.

Let parents raise he kids how they want. It's no one business if she is using a pacifier except them and their ped.

Best story ever.

I was in Scotland for a the Eddinburgh festival. Long story shory my fanny pack was stolen.

So I am with the police. I call my credit card companies "yeah, my fanny pack was stolen".

Every time I said it the cops giggled.

After about 20 min of calls and lots of louder and louder laughter I finally asked what was up.

Cop: You know we call them "bum bags" here.

Me: oh, no. Didn't. yeah. we call it a fanny pack".

Cop: um, you know what fanny means, right?

me: Yup. Its your behind.

Cop: um, nope. Its the "front".

So for 20 min they were laughing at me calling it a vagina bag.

"Dummy" makes sense. You put it in the kid's mouth when you don't want them to make any noise; you want them to be "dumb" (as in "deaf, dumb, and blind").

But I used to live in England so it sounds more natural to me. I can see how all of this would be confusing!

.My thought was more along the lines of a dummy nipple. Like the pacifier replaces moms nipple.

Re: Words from England just don't translate

Rubber = Eraser

When I got married, my in-laws (Australian) came over for the wedding. My BIL wanted to buy erasers for his friends. He asked the guy for some rubbers for his friends. Yeah, that didn't go over so well.

Napkins = Feminine products
Serviettes = Napkins
to prise = to pry something from someone's hands (just learned this the other day.)
Dustman = garbage man

They also use the Present Perfect more than we do and we may say, "Did you do your homework yet?", but it's incorrect to them. This rule still confuses me. Some of their grammar rules still confuse me.

I'm teaching a British English lexis class next semester. I have heard that I'm going to be confused.

trainers=sneakers.
fringe= bangs

We lived in Ireland for 2 years and it took us awhile to get used to the different lingo. LOL

Holiday = vacation
garden = yard

They use a lot of old terminology like fortnight and 1/2 six instead of 6:30, they say zed instead of zee.
