Which one for 16th birthday?
The Poconos sounds like way more fun to me and I have always been an indoor girl. I feel like the girls won't get as much quality time together in the city. You can't talk to everyone at dinner unless you're shouting and the hotel rooms would be split up.

Which one for 16th birthday?
My favorite sweet 16 was my friends in the city. (This was over 10 years ago). We took the train in and stayed in a hotel. We had 1 room for 8 girls and her parents had one across the hall. They took us to applesbees for dinner and we went to see Rent. In the morning her dad brought bagels to our room and her mom took us shopping. She put on invitation if we wanted to bring money to go shopping

That would be fun if it weren't freezing out in January. I hate winter birthdays!
The weather could also put a damper on shopping in the city, so cabin is looking like a better plan.

Re: Which one for 16th birthday?
My daughter and her friends love going into the city. I started taking them regularly when they were 15ish. She has a January birthday too. She had a big sweet 16 but we celebrated her 17th in NYC. There are indoor public spaces that stay open till 11 or 12 year round in midtown that are really nice places to hang out. We went out for dinner, then walked around Rockefeller center ( plenty of stores to warm up in) then we got cupcakes from crumbs, coffee from Starbucks then walked to the indoor space on 58th and Madison ( I think) I brought a few paper goods and a candle in my bag and we sang happy birthday and hung out till it closed. For her 18th we went to Lips on east 56th with her friends, it's a dinner show and it was beyond hilarious but it's a little wild. There were a bunch of sweet 16s there when we were there. Tickets are way less than a Broadway show, plus it's dinner and it's memorable! My vote is for NYC!
