Minor allergies to dogs for pet owner
my family and I got a dog this weekend. My husband is a big dog lover and we are finding although he had two step kids we may not be able to have one of our own and I feel this fills a big void of love. It's been just a couple days and myself and my daughter have minor allergy issue . It's just our eyes and eye drops do help. Do you get used to it? Does it get better or worse? I have just the living room of area rug and the rest are hardwoods as I am trying to make the bedrooms off limits. Any helpful hints? I already weakened and let him in my room this morning lol. It's a hound mix and we stayed away from the hairy dogs and major shedding dogs when we were looking. We already love him so hoping this gets better because there's no way he's leaving us lol

There's a good chance you will build up a tolerance. I used to be very allergic to dogs. My ILs got a dog that I used to be around all the time when my DH & I were dating and he lived at home. I was allergic to her at first, but I'm not anymore. We have a dog, that I think I may be slightly allergic to as well. I get very itchy when I'm on the floor playing with him.

Like the above poster said, you have a good chance of building up a tolerance.
I used to be rather allergic to cats, but once we had two cats in my house growing up, I developed an immunity to it. Once in a rare, rare while, I'll get a little bump on my hand if they accidentally scratch me.

What kind of dog is it? Does it shed? There are shampoos that help with excessive dander or shedding that can help.
Also if it's just a slight allergy, you can take a claritin or allegra daily to help with that. Like other posters said, you can build up a tolerance. If not and it gets worse, you may have to consider a non-shedding breed (if the one you have sheds)

North shore says hound mix but I think they say that for every dog lol. Good news we gave him a bath and huge difference. I think maybe because he was in the room with the cats? I did the eye drops twice today and I was fine thank goodness. No other symptoms besides itchy eyes and that is much better since the bath :)

So glad to hear! He probably just had lots of dander on him. If you keep him clean (weekly or bi-weekly brushing - short hair would use a curry comb) and a monthly bath with de shedding or special shampoo to lessen dander, you guys will be good to go.

I built a tolerance to my cats. Just like allergy shots where they inject you with the allergen so you build a tolerance. It gets way better over time. In the meantime, Zyrtec is great.
I was very allergic to my cats when I first got them. Now I feel nothing at all around them.
