It's encouraging to see all the sensible posts on here. So many people are clueless, and I do not understand why, given all the press there has been about the dangers of over using antibiotics.

My family is the same way. My husband is an idiot and tells me to give my 3 year old the last of the 5 year Olds antibiotic when he starts to get symptoms. He doesn't get you have to take a full dose for the full time and that you can not share antibiotic. Drives me insane. Or when my brother has a toothache and takes my mom's last 3 antibiotics. It kills me.

I also know people who do this and it makes me crazy. It's such a stupid thing to do (no offense to your DH- I have family members who do it too). I just can't understand how people can be so ignorant about it.

Re: Misusing/Overusing Anitbiotics

I had an ex best friend growing up all she did was go to the dr for meds. OMG..she got a cold she was on antibiotics. and the dr. would give them to her probably to shut her up b/c she was a pushy annoying person if she didnt get her way.

2013 I came down with what thought was an infected bug bite..i had a blister type thing on my lower back. I went to urgent care, gave me antibiotics and sent me on my way. a few months later it came back in the same spot. Dr. gave me yet another round of meds and said it was a follicular cyst that got infected. Well every month 3-4 days before AF i would get these blisters. turns out it was mRSA (staph infection). I had to see an infectious disease dr who then put me on the heaviest shit imaginable. I was warned to not get pregnant on it and he wanted to put me on BC to make sure.

I was still getting breakouts every month before AF even after being on round after round of Bactrim.

I finally sought out a naturopath and within 3 months I had no more staph breakouts and have not since.

Antibiotics have their place. but they are overused and abused for sure.

my mom is the same way. if I say im not feeling well or have a head cold "do you have any antibiotics in the house??" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My MIL runs to.the dr when.she sneezes. Needs a pill for everything. I don't get it. I think the last time i was on an antibiotic was about a year ago. My oldest hasn't been sick to where she needs meds in well over a year. My youngest has allergies that we treated with Allerga (per.her ped) but she still needed an antibiotic to kick.her cough. My ped rarely gives us meds. And I don't ask.him.for.them either

Misusing/Overusing Anitbiotics

This is why I do not go to doctors. Last time I went was about 10 years ago. I don't use Western medicine.

Re: Misusing/Overusing Anitbiotics

Just thought of this thread.

DS got sick over the weekend. Double ear infection. Has been taking antibiotic fine for me past couple of days.

Starting last night he refuses....spits it out and fights with us.

Same thing this morning.

He has no symptoms anymore and both DH and I tried to hold him down and it was awful.

At this point it is what it is.

CPS could get called to the house with all his yelling. Chat Icon

I go once a year for all routine visits.

My company actually reimburses us $$ for keeping our wellness visits.

I'm not big on pills and such though either, and neither is DH.

I also go to yoga usually 3 times a week and rarely get sick beyond a cold or two a year, and I work in healthcare....

I had flagyl resistent c. diff. FOR 7 MONTHS!!! And I spent a week in the hospital. So I get your frustration. It's awful what antibiotics can do to you. FTR, I had strep. So i did need them. I caught it from my 11 month old who had frequent ear infections. Neither one of us are immune compromised and were not in hospitals. This stuff is IN the community BECAUSE of antibiotic abuse.

But, whenever i go to the dr they try and prescribe antibiotics and will actually say things like it's probably viral but.....

I don't go to the dr to get a script. I go to find out IF i need one. I have asthma and sometimes I do need them. But, I am so sick of saying.. "I have a c. diff history" and then watching them immediately say that they are not going to give them to me. Well duh!! However, they should not have given them anyway!!!! If you think it is viral then the appropriate course of treatment is to treat the symptoms and NOT prescribe antibiotics. I think the dr.'s feel pressure to give something when someone comes in a pays a co-pay to be seen. I for one am happy to be seen and be told, "It's viral". Give me a nose spray or tell me to take OTC meds. DON'T give antibiotics if they are not needed.

A good friend will often say, "I feel a little tired and funny so I am just taking a z pack". I makes me bonkers.

In reality a DR does not REALLY know if you need an antibiotic or not. Its a best guess thing. For instance, my son has had pnemonia a number of times because he has reactive airway. When given antibiotics, he gets better. However, he does not get a fever. He looks lethargic, pale and his breathing is heavy. His O2 sats are usually lowered but not always. I have had to brawl with Dr's to get him antibiotics! Basically unless bloodwork is taken at every appointment then they have no way of knowing you have a virus or bacteria. I try to wait out illness. Am I feeling better or worse? How many days, etc.

Good medical science definitely supports judicious use of antibiotics. The standards are pretty clear not to treat colds and coughs that are probably viral and start treating pneumonias and ear infections with amoxicllin vs. more potent antibiotics.

I think I can count on 1 hand the number of courses of oral antibiotics BOTH my kids (5 and 7 have received). Granted we're a biased sample. They have had a few rounds of drops for pink eye though... perils of day care. (Even that is mostly viral but day cares, schools won't let you back in w/o the drops).

I think the big challenge with antibiotics is that as doctors are forced to spend less and less time with each patient sometimes writing a script for zithromax vs. actually spending the 10-15 mins to explain that it's a virus and it will get better on its own.

Also, some people are like, wait, I took a day off work to bring my kid in and all you can tell me to do is eat chicken soup and drink fluids! Bah!

I'm pleased to see so much common sense about antibiotics in this thread!
