What are the ramifications for unexcused absences?

All I heard was the state frowns on it.

In NJ if it's a lot of unexcused absences they will call social services on you.

In ny too, if you have over a certain amount of absences the school can call the state for Ed neglect, ( family vacations will not be a defense). I have seen ed neglect cases filed for absences starting in the 20s
range. I'm surprised the child who is bring mentored by big brother big sister hasn't had a case called in yet against her mother.

Im surprised too b/c my student works closely with her guidance counselors. almost two years ago they were displaced when the trailer she was living in with her grandpa went on fire. (a trailer that would hold like 3 pple, was housing the aunt, 5 kids, 2 siblings and mother too).

So I know at some point social workers were involved. I really have no idea how she got away with this many. Unless they are dealing with it now. Im going to try to get more info on this.

If your child becomes a delinquent that feels school isn't important because of taking off a few days of school for a trip per year then there is a bigger lesson not being taught. Families do the best they can. I personally would not pull them for a week but if certain factors came up I might.

"Let's take a family trip before the baby comes,DHs back surgery is in May, Grandma's 90th birthday is in florida, DC summer program is starting in July, Someone is starting a new job in summer and can't take off all summer........."

You can say these things aren't important reasons as education comes first. I would say you live once and family memories occasionally have to take priority. You could die in a car crash next week. Find a lump on your body. Lose your job next year. What will have mattered? 4 days off for a family trip or memories you have forever?

Ding Ding!

I missed 3 WEEKS for a trip to see relatives down south growing up. I was an excellent student, and didn't become a delinquent because of it.

I highly doubt the school is going to call social services for taking your kid out of school to go on vacation. If it happens for a week every month, then maybe. Some of these posts crack me up.

Oh ok, I know this is the law or whatever in NY but I used to miss so many days as a kid and no one ever called it investigated. Lol. I feel like in NJ they are on top of you.

We dealt with this with my step son when he was younger with his asthma hospital stays. It was nothing serious. And my husbands cousin got DYFS called on her as well.

I feel like Nj is more strict than NY at enforcing this rule.

Re: How many times has your kid been absent this year ?

DS is in 4th grade. He has missed 3 days this year. 1 because he was sick and 2 because we took him out on vacation. Up to 3rd grade we were taking him out 3 days (to go away on thanksgiving week), and usually he is sick 1 or 2 days. I want to add we take school very seriously, we bring homework with us and, so far, his performance at school is very good. I think it is worse being late to school periodically.

Yes I pulled him for vacation so we could spend time with my husbands family in Florida.

When I got the letter telling I needed to make for of an effort to get my son to not miss so much school and that I needed to focus more on his eduation I was pissed.

I am curious how can you be pissed when you were part of the problem?

I was pissed because it was not his teacher who had a problem with it. It was a general note sent from the principal because he reached a certain amount of absences. A note from a person who knows nothing of why we went to see my husbands family when we did or anything about my son's health. Someone who would not even be able to pick him out if he was one of two kids standing next to each other. If he was behind in his work or struggling and I received a note from his teacher or even a personal note from the principal I wouldn't care. I don't like him being a number in a spreadsheet. Especially since we finish all work and projects on time and he has very high grades. Saying I don't make his education a priority is insulting.

It is just a form letter. I would not take it personally.

My son got a similar letter for being tardy 5 times in the first quarter. I drop off my son in the kiss n ride line everyday. 4 out of the 5 tardies were days that he was in the school door at 8:45 but not yet in his seat.

After receiving that letter in the first quarter, DS has not been late again. The only time he was late was for a doctor's appointment.

DS likes to be early. He wants to get to school before the doors open. He is super punctual like his dad.
