My kids have been absent quite a bit. They've been sick a bunch and we took them out for vacation twice. They are in K and 2nd grade. Frankly, my kids are doing very well and these absences did not impede their learning in the slightest. My 2nd grader can do most of her work in her sleep.
Personally, even through high school I think it can be fine depending on the kid. If you have a kid who does exceptionally well at school I don't see why it's a problem. Also, I think if you have a senior who is doing well and it is the end of the year, all tests are done, college acceptances received then what is the big deal. I think sometimes teachers can be jerks too. I hate high horses.
Because now, many colleges will ask for a report of senior year grades as well, and can revoke an acceptance if there is a major change from Jr. to Sr. year
Yes, but we are talking missing a week at the end of a school year IF that child is a very good student. I highly doubt that missing 1 week for a good student would cause a significant deterioration of grades.
Fwiw when I was graduating high school, colleges also required you to submit end of year transcripts. Yes, if there was a significant change your admission may be reevaluated however, going from say an A to a B+ or even a B in your final trimester of high school generally does not warrant such a revocation.
I teach in NYC and my school our grades are already in, report cards done and classes assigned for next yr so feel free to take some of my kindergarten kids in vacAtion

Yes I pulled him for vacation so we could spend time with my husbands family in Florida.
When I got the letter telling I needed to make for of an effort to get my son to not miss so much school and that I needed to focus more on his eduation I was pissed.
I am curious how can you be pissed when you were part of the problem?

How many times has your kid been absent this year ?
I know there is a push for good test scores but being absent isn't all about scores. It's more about state mandates. There are laws to abide by for excessive absence. At times, portfolios of work must be presented to the superintendent to prove the child has learned effectively and should move on even if they exceeded the absences.
As an educator I disagree with kids being pulled for vacations. There is plenty of time off for that. However, I. Also feel it is a parents right to do what they think is best for their kids. You just need to be aware that if your child exceeds a certain. # of days out. You may get a letter. Your child can be held back, etc.

There are two schools of thought on this............those that think it's okay and those that don't AND nobody will convince anyone to change their stance on the matter. This argument comes up on here ALL the time.
Here's the reality. The kids who do great in school will do great whether they have 100% attendance OR whether they miss "X" number of days for a vacation, sickness, or whatever else. Those that struggle are going to struggle even if they have 100% attendance HOWEVER, missing school is a bigger deal for those kids so it probably is best to not pull a kid who needs a lot of help in school. I think we can all agree on that.
All that being said, I don't really give a cr@p what anyone thinks about my decision to pull my DD. This nonsense of K, 1, 2 being SO much harder then when we were kids is SO overblown. Yes, it's different but speaking as a former elementary school teacher, it's NOT as crazy as everyone seems to think. It's NOT college, it's still just elementary school and it's not going to make or break any kid to miss a few days over the course of their educational career.
I value education, we put a great deal of emphasis on it in our home but at the same time, I also value family time, making memories, and giving my kids real-life learning experiences and I'll be the one to decide if I want to do that during school breaks or not. At the end of the day, as long as my kids are doing well in school, which my DD is without a doubt, it will be at MY discretion if and when they should miss school and I don't care what anyone else has to say about it. If the work is completed and they aren't behind then I see NO problem with it.
Didn't finish reading yet but ITA with this.
When I was in school my parents pulled me almost every year for vacations. I always brought work with me. I was an exceptional student and graduated in the Top 20 of my class.
Most of the trips were trade show or conference trips for my father's job. We went when the trade show was. They were never during the summer or school breaks.
When I was in college I took days off to go to Hawaii with my family. Stayed for half the trip then flew home by myself so I wouldn't miss an important test.
My parents' pulling me out of school didn't make me lazy or give me a sense of entitlement. It taught me that if you want to play- you have to pay. Study extra hard and make up all work, do extra credit, whatever it takes to remain a good student.
I plan on pulling my kids out of school next spring (pre-k and k) to go to Disney. The thought of crowds gives me hives so I will avoid them as much as humanly possible and that means NOT going during a school break.
This year I pulled them for 5 days to go on an extended family vacation (my parents paid for it. We didn't pick the date).
I made sure all homework was made up- but honestly, my DD already knew her alphabet and how to write her letters so I wasn't concerned.
As they get older I will evaluate the workload and curriculum before I choose to take them out of school but the fact of having school alone isn't enough to deter me from bringing them away on vacation.

It's unfair to those students who get up every day and make their strongest efforts to go to class to have students who just don't want to wake up, go to class earn the same diploma. I've been on the attendance committee in 2 schools, and you would not believe some of the excuses people come up with to try and get their kids out of denied credit... The cat died, the alarms didn't go off, someone was stalking her online, she doesn't sleep because her dad snores too loud......... Please. None of this is ever just poo-poo'ed and accepted. As a committee, we've never once thought this was ok. The previous posters weren't being harsh...just following the rules.
I think these excuses are VERY different from parents pulling their kids for a family vacation. I can see how these things would be a problem.

Yes but many times it's the same parents who pull their HS kids for vacation then enable their children to just take off for whatever reason, only to further enable them by lying for them... Great lesson to teach the kids.

Well said. A parent/ child commitment to education is the priority. A few missed days of school when the assignments are made up should not be an issue.

Re: How many times has your kid been absent this year ?
My kids are in Kindergarten and I dont know if theirs is germier than average, but it seems they have mas illnesses that go through the scholl. Theyve probably missed close to 25 days! 5 days was due to my Dad's passing in December and we had to be in NY with no one to watch them here(also a long time to be away from them.) One of my sons had pneumonia, pinkeye, stomach viruses, etc.

I think maybe 7-8 days total. But it was legitimate reasons of illness we didnt pull out for vacations. However, im one of the parents who has no guilt doing keeping them from school for family time.

How many times has your kid been absent this year ?
My children are at pre-k level and younger. They have missed a few days here and there so we can visit family OOS. This is in a daycare setting.
In the Fall, DS will be in a formal preschool through our county school district and we hope to not pull him for any reason other than being legitimately sick where he cannot attend (fever, etc). This means any family trip will have to wait until a long holiday weekend. Although now I just realized he will miss 2-3 days in Sept. for multiple weddings in the same weekend.
As someone who graduated with 10 consecutive years of perfect attendance (chicken pox kept me out in 2nd grade) I am not a believer in taking children out for vacations. To each their own. DH and I have already had this talk and school is top priority for us.

the student I mentor with Big Brothers/Big Sisters is in 8th grade, and told me this weekend she missed 47 days of school. ****. thats not including snow days that school was closed. She's supposed to go to 9th grade and start HS in september. I wonder if they can hold her back for this?
I have no idea what the repercussions are in the PA school system where I live. She said that any absence from now until end of school (6/16) requires a dr's note.
this child's mother is a trainwreck.

How many times has your kid been absent this year ?
My DS isnt in school yet, but this reminded me of when I was a kid. I think my parents pulled me out of school twice for vacation -- once in elementary and once in high school. Both times it was like 2-3 days tops. Anyways, during the high school trip I ran into my Vice Principal on the flight. Yeah, wasnt expecting that! She was nothing but nice, but I remember being mortified. So the moral of my story is, be truthful with administration beforehand LOL

In NYC you needed 2 of 3- 90% attendance (so that's approximately 18 days out), passing grades in major subjects and passing grades on the exams. But I also feel like that's at the principal's discretion as we often promoted kids who did not meet the criteria.

Yes this is true in NYC also it is no surprise that the parent is a train wreck, poor attendance is correlated with instability in the home.

In my DDs elementary school............nothing, that I know of. Maybe if it was excessive "unexcused" absences something would be done but if you have a I few, like my DD did, they didn't say or do anything.

Re: How many times has your kid been absent this year ?
My 3rd grader has perfect attendance so far this year as far as being home sick.
My 5th grader had a virus and was absent once for sick.
We pulled them out of school 2 days back in March for a long family weekend on vacation.
So 2-3 days at most. MY DD, although she wanted to go on the vacation, hated that she had her perfect attendance ruined!

YUP..they've moved 3 times this year alone. go from apt to apt ditching paying rent. She lives with her 2 half siblings, and her aunt and aunts 5 kids all live in the house too. Its really sad and I've been with her for 4 years now mentoring her trying to keep her on the right path. I had no idea she missed this much school!
Her mom changes jobs like we change our underwear. half the time she's not working.
