Cars hitting houses

Does anyone else think it's weird that almost everyday it's on the news that a car drove into a house( or a business)?
I feel like this happens constantly now. Do you think all of these people are texting or just wreckless?

A lot of them are also older people that hit the gas instead of the brake. That's more in the business ones. I strongly believe that once you hit a certain age you should be required to retake your driving test. Your reaction time is not anywhere close to what it was as a teen. It should then be required regularly to retake.....and eventually get your license taken away.

I agree, don't get me wrong, but this has been tried before, and the AARP was up in arms. It technically is agism... that said, I don't think there's any reason why, when we have to renew our drivers licenses, we can't retake the test as well... the testing sites are open on Saturdays... and throughout the week. This way you remove the impression of it being agist.

Re: Cars hitting houses

When my sister's house was crashed into in 2007 it was a drunken driver that did it.

This was before my brother was hit and seriously injured by a drunken driver in 2008.

It was Labor Day Weekend, in 2007, and my sister - who has a townhouse in Nesconset, in a gated community - was not home. She was out with her friends in Long Beach for Labor Day weekend so she was not there. But my brother, who lived with her at the time - he rented from her for quite a few years - and he was home, asleep, and my brother's son was home (five years old at the time) asleep. It was around 5am. I guess whatever bar this loser was at had closed and he poured himself into a car and decided to try and get home.

Well, since he was over twice the legal limit he must have thought a private access road (landscapers and garbage men only use it) into my sister's community was a regular road --- mind you, even though it was closed off by a huge fence with chains and there were several telephone poles --- but, he slammed through the fence, knocked it down, slammed over and ran right over a huge telephone pole, and bam, crashed right into the side of my sister's condo (she is an end unit). He crashed RIGHT before the kitchen -- into, primarily the garage. But the side of the garage. Anyway, he took out that huge fence and telephone pole. He was going about 50 mph.

My brother was upstairs, thank God the bedrooms were upstairs... sleeping. Christopher in his room, next to my brother's room. Jenn, again, not home as she was with her friends that weekend. Kenneth wakes up all confused because he literally heard a BOOM - like a bomb went off and the entire house shook. It was RIGHT below him. If he was lower, it would have hit him. Christopher comes running into Kenneth's room wondering what was going on. Kenneth told him to STAY RIGHT THERE, do not move! Christopher did as he was told. Kenneth opened his safe, got his gun, and ran downstairs (in only his boxer briefs LOL) -- again, he didn't know what the heck had happened so he wasn't taking chances.

He comes downstairs to nothing - the house looked fine. Again, this was the garage so at first he was like what gives?? He's sleepy and was in a daze as he was sleeping and it's dark because it is 5am. Just as he was about to get really confused because everything looked fine he smelled oil, gasoline, and kind of like smoke from an impact -- and, being a cop, he smelled the airbags. It was an Infiniti so it had airbags all over and the smell they have when they discharge is very distinct. So, my brother looks outside the front window -- MIND YOU, this all took place in about twenty seconds lol... and then he sees, from my sister's kitchen -- there's the door to the garage in the kitchen -- light peering through from the SIDE... and he's like oh shit.

He opened the door from the kitchen into the garage and was met with about 70% of the front of the car, headlights, everything smashed, all the boxes and kind of storage stuff in the garage was ALL OVER - sheetrock, and fluids leaking on the floor. THANK GOD there was no car in the garage at the time. Because my sister was not home! Otherwise there would have been an explosion, most likely. My brother didn't park in there since he was renting from her home, she owned it so she got the rights to park in the garage. The rear end of the car was STICKING UP because the car had hit at such a rate that it was actually airborne on impact.

The wheels were still rolling in mid air as it is crashed and smashed. All Kenneth could hear was "WELCOME TO WALT DISNEY WORLD'S EPCOT CENTER!! PLEASE STAY SEATED INSIDE THE MONORAIL" Chat Icon Chat Icon over and over and over again on loop --- my brother had bought his son a toy monorail on their summer trip they had just returned from to Disney World LOL. It was destroyed in the crash but the speaker function still worked, on loop. LOL.

Christopher, at this point, is going Daddy!!!! So Kenneth yelled upstairs, Christopher get Daddy's cell phone NOW and bring it to me. Chris ran and got it from Ken's bedroom and brought it to him. Kenneth called 911.

He then told Christopher to go upstairs where it was safe, in his bed, and sit in his bed and WAIT for Kenneth to get him.

Kenneth went into the garage -- again all this took place in what? Three minutes?? But Ken went in the garage to see the driver attempting to get out of the vehicle. Kenneth said, STAY WHERE YOU ARE. The guy said, I have to go for a walk -- all drunk and out of it.

Kenneth commanded him, at gunpoint lol, to show him his hands and get out of the car and get on the ground -- at which point, he tried again to flee the scene so Kenneth handcuffed him LOL. Mind you, Ken is still in his underwear LMAO!!!!

When the police arrived Kenneth asked them to administer a breath alcohol tester - and they did. It was over two times the legal limit, almost three.

They arrested him. His insurance had the minimum amount for property damage at $10,000 and it JUST made it for the damage since it was only a garage and sheetrock --- had it been the kitchen, my sister would have gotten the $10,000 which barely covers to renovate a whole kitchen -- and she would have been liable for the rest UNLESS she sued him personally but you know how that goes! The guy was 25, had a $70,000 Infiniti sports car.

He was charged with DWI - got probation. Slap on the wrist. God knows he is probably out there doing it again.

Eight months later a drunk driver hit and almost killed my brother at work while he had one drunk driver pulled over -- he was attempting to arrest that one when a completely different one struck his patrol car. He hasn't been able to work since.

And that's my story with drunk drivers. If they could leave me and my family alone now that'd be GREAT.

... I have pics SOMEWHERE of this car STICKING mid-air out of the side of my sister's condo.

Re: Cars hitting houses

It scares the crap out of me. Imagine a mother walking into CVS with her kids and a car hitting them. I agree once you hit a certain age a license should be up for review. I know so many people who know their elder parent should not be driving and its very hard to get them to stop and to just take their car away. If it were a law that if they didn't pass a road test it would be easier.

My son's pediatrician -- happened to her. She was in with a patient, A CHILD, and was examining them and the car came right through the wall. She actually jumped in front of the patient to protect the patient. The doctor broke her arm.

Police are searching for a driver who crashed his car into a house in North Bellmore early Thursday morning, fleeing the scene on foot.

Nassau County police said investigators are also trying to determine if the vehicle was involved in an unrelated accident before the 12:25 a.m. crash into the home on Dewey Avenue. Photos from the scene show the damaged car, a Chevy Camaro with a Maryland license plate, poking out of the garage.

The garage structure was damaged.

Re: Cars hitting houses

This happened to my neighbor directly across the street. Last summer around 5:30 am I heard that awful sound of a car crashing. Ran to my front door where a Subaru had gone up onto my neighbors lawn plowed through a lamp post and crashed into their stoop. I couldn't even believe it. I ran out barefoot and in my pjs called 911. The woman inside the car was not conscious and her breathing was very labored. I was freaking out. I was so happy when Ems showed up. I found later she was ok and she was 19 and was charged with a dwi.

My dh wanted to put up huge barriers in front of our home after this. He was seriously looking into getting spikes. We never ever let out girls go near our street. It's such a huge fear of mine since we live on a busier road.

Cars hitting houses

Ugh so scary. Not my home but a few years ago we came out to find our car smashed on the side. Our neighbors car was pushed up onto the sidewalk severely smashed and a whole bunch of other cars were damaged. Apparently some assshole was drunk, got off the highway and made the sharp turn onto our block and smashed into a whole bunch of cars. The cops were chasing him though and caught him when he crashed the cars and left a note on our car letting us know what happened and asking us to go down to the police station. We were able to get our deductible back from his insurance company but still..it was the middle of the night no one was on the street but God forbid it was another time he could have easily killed people.

It's so scary..the older people too but more so the DWIs. You really have to be some special type of idiot to drive drunk.

Re: Cars hitting houses

I think it was last summer I saw a car went thru the front doors of CVS in Seaford.

It was many years back, but my FIL tackled a drunk woman to the ground who crashed into his front yard...thankfully the house sits up a bit and she hit the stoop.

She was trying so hard to get away too.

There have been at least 3 incidents on my block though of teens hitting parked cars in the night and at least 2 of them were because of texting.

I practice yoga in Massapequa next to a restaurant where I've seen people stumbling to their cars. This is my fear there. I recently complained to the owner of the restaurant who insisted they call cabs for all their drunk customers.

My mom and I say this all the time.

It's like a "thing" now with people crashing into buildings. I don't remember hearing these stories ten years ago. So odd.

Happened a few times near me within the last few weeks. It's mostly drinking and or drugs. I am way more scared of the drinking and drugs than I am the elderly.

Cars hitting houses

happens everywhere
Drunk hit a house in my neighborhood. My daughter was having a sleep over and the girl who was staying with us... it was her house. Her mom was so upset. It nearly hit the room her older daughter sleeps in.

The house at the end of my street.... car diagonally crossed the street from a four way stop sign, jumped the curb, went over the lawn through a brick wall and into the garage.. My daughter and I were walking home from school, less than a half a block up.

We live waaaaaaaaaaaay off the main roads. quiet community behind a school. crazy stuff.

That's just my little area.. but see it all over the city too

thats a little under 2 thousand miles away.

I agree its DWI/DUI and Distracted driving to blame mostly.

Cars hitting houses

Earlier this year, my neighbor across the street was backing out of her driveway and ran right up on my lawn - stopped about five feet from my house (my DS and I were sitting right by the window she would have hit). Says she hit the gas instead of the brake. She was not DWI, nor is she old. She was wearing flip flops driving in Feb. My house is not close to the street either - about 40', my street is about 15' wide and she came at least 20' down her driveway. I think that is a pretty far distance to accidently back across my lawn.
