Excellent. Our goddaughter's parents plan on switching her at 1 year old... And she is tiny, maybe 28 inches and barely 20lbs... It drives me insane, but they are the kind of people who won't listen no matter what you tell them.

I wish they would make some laws about backless boosters too.
I really feel 5 pt harness is so much safer-especially for children who are built smaller like my DD . She is almost 5 but nowhere NEAR ready to be moved out of a 5 pt harness seat.

I think that with regards to the harness, that is more difficult to move forward with. By age 4/5 (even by 3) kids sizes are so varying. Our nephew is 3 this September, but he is already the size of the average 4 year old, by 5 he'll be the size of a 6/7 year old, my brother was the same way, his father was like that too (tall men). But if you feel that your daughter needs to be in a 5 pt harness still, keep her in a 5pt harness, no one is stopping you Chat Icon

Oh I know. She's staying in that seat as long as possible, trust me.
And just like the rear facing law- they would have to include not just an age to harness, but a size limit (height and weight) because like you said, kids vary in size so much
I just see so many people rushing to the backless/no harness- and I am not talking about children who are big enough. I am talking tiny little ones like my DD.
I don't understand the benefit of moving to that kind of seat early. I am guessing it's easier to use than a harness seat...

That's why I'm so upset with my friends. Their 1 year old is the size of my 6 month old! She's tiny. She has no business being front-facing anytime soon.

I don't understand the rush to forward face. I don't think it is any easier putting your kid in the car seat that way. It's definitely not safer. People say their kid looks uncomfortable but unless they can tell you th you may not be.

It's a convenience thing for them. For some reason, they think that it would be easier to place her FF, which, I have experience both ways, believe you me, I have an easier time RF my DS, than I used to have FF my sister at the same age. (Though it may be the car, I have a CX5 now, back then I had a 2 door Monte Carlo, lol.) They also think that the convertible seats can't RF - ummm they are designed to be used from birth, so, yeah.

Why anyone would question these laws or regulations is beyond me. I wish my kids could still sit RF. They are 6.5 and over 50 lbs and 4 ft tall. Chat Icon

LOL, I think at that point I'd probably be comfortable with them FF, hahaha, I can't even imagine. They're reasoning is "We all sat FF"... well, yeah, but there are reasons as to why they have these recommendations now. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I made damn sure to post the link to the new law, and I said my two cents... I never want to look back and say I wish I said something.

I'm so happy to hear this!!! I wish NY would follow and make it a law here. I can't tell you how many people I know who out 1 year old ff even though there is so much information about rf being safer.

I wish people would start educating themselves about car seat safety in general. At my dd school she is one of the only 4 year olds sitting in a 5 point harness most of the kids are in backless boosters it's crazy to me.

That's awful and also illegal to FF before 1.

I honked and yelled at a driver yesterday on the LIE in the middle of rush hour traffic because a back seat passenger was holding what looked like a newborn (definitely under 3 months) in their lap and over their shoulder. Pull over if you need to take the baby out!

They still have her in the Britax B-Safe, so if she's small enough to still fit in that, don't you think she might be too small to switch to FF, even if she is 1 year old (they are waiting until her birthday).

Believe it or not, I have a family member who has her 7 year old rear facing still. The poor kid is smooshed beyond belief.

OK, that is a little too much, IMO.... I also feel like (while you're not turning around or staring at the kid all the time) that leaves more room for them to misbehave, lol. I can't imagine the child being within the height and weight limits for RF for ANY seat, isn't that more dangerous than just having them FF?

I can't remember the name of the seat, but it's a high limit one that allows rear facing for a LONG time! She is a safety nut to the EXTREME LOL. If you look at some of the car seat boards, there are a lot of people that have their kids rear facing at 6 and up!

That would be difficult in my case. DD has always been tall and thin. She's 4 now and just recently reached 33 pounds. No way she could fit rear because her legs are so long. I do think it's a good rule, but I don't know how that would work for children like mine - the gangling sort. (We had switched her to forward facing when she was 2.5 because her legs were bent awful). I'm pregnant now with #2, if this one is anything like his/her sister I wonder what I'll do. Even if that's not a rule where I am, I still want the safest option. Chat Icon

Do taller kids who weigh less just sit Indian Style in the car? How does that work?
