3 of the 6 officers were black.

And?

Just updating the post since the post was about officers being charged. It was just released when I wrote it.

But just to add to your "AND", since 3 were black, I guess it wasn't just white cops targeting a black man, because that is how the picture is always painted.

To answer LSP:

Baltimore has been in a slow-rolling crisis for decades. This is not new. No one should pretend it's new. Baltimore has paid out approximately $5.7m in 4 years to settle police brutality cases. Those figures are facts, and they don't get pulled out of thin air.

Historically, Baltimore has been reeling from deflated industry and economic decline since the '60s. Of course, this causes increases in crime AND poverty. In the '70s, which a lot of people don't know, is that the police department began illegally spying on specifically targeted communities. It was called the Inspectional Services Division and they primarily focused on African Americans. The ISD spied on community activists, politicians, black owned businesses, students, pretty much anyone they considered a person of interest, not just criminal activity. They created files against people who had never been arrested or even involved with illegal activity! They were simply doing this "in case" they needed info on someone or needed to try to prove something. The ISD felt that the attack on black civil liberties was a small price to pay for so-called "law and order." Again, this is fact - there is a 1975 report from the Maryland State Senate that confirms its existence.

So when a community feels - and IS - unfairly targeted, fear, crime and poverty creates an atomosphere ripe for abuse. I read a quote that stood out to me:
"The Baltimore Police Department is a far more just and able institution today than it was in the era of the ISD. The officers work to police a cash-strapped city with deeply entrenched woes. Many officers, I have no doubt, are courageous and good. But they are part of an institution that has long viewed Baltimore’s African American community as something to be feared, contained, and tamed. It is little wonder, with such a stained history, that frustration at times leads to violence."

thank you for your candid and honest reply. So what you are saying is that they extended MCCarthyism to surveillance the African American community into the 60s and 70s.
At the end of the day, sadly, a man died that did not have to. As a whole, the community needs to come together to address all of its myriad of issues. I truly hope they are able to do so.

Well, I think the point of the post was police brutality, not white brutality.

ETA: I do still think it is a race issue because take a look at the demographic of the communities this happens in. Just because some of the officers are black, doesn't exclude it from being a race issue. Racism can exist in a race as well.

So basically you're saying this isn't a white/black thing it's a poor black thing and anyone and everyone is targeting them? I'm so confused. As a middle class white female I don't know what to say, ya know since I can't see past my own prejudice. Chat Icon

I think it comes down to a career criminal being arrested AGAIN, and cops not following protocol 100% . That does not make them bad cops.

Let's face it, everyone has cut corners in life, their job, whatever, no one is perfect. Cops are out there every single day in places like Baltimore, NYC etc... dealing with trash, hoodlums, animals, people with no respect, or conscious, so yes, there may be a slip up. This time it cost a mans life, I am sorry for him, but his wrap sheet is beyond ridiculous. It is sad to say, and this doesn't justify anything at all, but a man with a wrap sheet like that is going to wind up dead somehow, or a lifer in prison.

Bad cops are bad cops, but for the cops out there that are good, and have to deal with scumbags like this on a daily basis, I can see the occasional slip up.

Where are the protesters for the 25 year old cop that was killed from Massapequa? A man who was protecting citizens, helping to make our streets safer, is now gone! No looting, no protesting, NOTHING. But look at all the hype when it comes down to a black career criminal.

You never hear about the black cop killing the white thug. You never hear about blacks killing themselves in their own communities. YOU ONLY HEAR ABOUT IT WHEN ITS A SUSPECTED WHITE COP AND BLACK CRIMINAL. Where is the race issue? Everyone wants to put it on the white cop, but guess what, he sees shiit on a daily basis out there, that we only see in movies. Animalistic behavior. Behavior like those animalistic black girls that beat the shiit out of that girl in McDonalds, and no one helped her. Animalistic behavior like the fight in Valley Stream, and no one helped that girl either. They actually told people trying to help to get away. This is what our cops are trying to protect us against. So excuse me if I don't have as much remorse for a career criminal, because if he lived his life like a regular citizen, he would be alive today.

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not following protocol does in fact make them bad cops.

The protocol is there for a reason.

Our society isn't set up so that cops get to be judge, jury and executioner. If someone arrested is a saint, a drug dealer, or a murder - the cops job is to apprehend them by the book. Failure to do your job properly makes you bad at your job.

And how could he have lived his life like a regular citizen? He grew up in a home with lead paint chipping off the walls. His school had drinking fountains he couldn't drink out of because of lead pipes, and so many other factors. Why is this happening? Saying well he could have lived his life like a regular citizen is really easy, and quite ignorant, for us to say because of where we come from.

The system failed him, and is still failing the neighbourhood. Going in there with the attitude of just police them because they are all "career criminals" is not the way to do it. Bad policing, as the poster above me said, shouldn't be happening. There was no reason, that we know of, to even arrest him.

I really hope this case brings to light a lot of things that we have been pushing aside. Saying I'm sorry he had to lose his life, BUT he had a record is just justifying your reason of why he died.

You are looking at only what you think is the problem, not the causes. It does a disservice to black communities to generalize the behaviors of few without trying to understand the why.

Wealthy white men bought black people to be slaves. The most unconscionable thing - to claim ownership over someone who had no choice, to treat them as property, without any respect or compassion, for another human life is despicable. But they did it because they felt entitled to do so, to prove their power. Southern police forces were specifically created to subdue the slave population, to track, degrade, hunt, intimidate, and coerce slaves. Multiply that by 300 years. It is sickening to think of how the black population in America has been - and continues to be - treated.

Notice that I haven't said anything anti-police. But if you want to claim to be understanding of the situation you're not truly doing so until you realize that our history has always targeted the black population as one to be feared and contained. It happens in the most subtle, subconscious ways, but it's a palpable school of though and action that pervades our country despite everyone's best efforts to say it doesn't.

We live in a country where you are innocent until proven guilty. Freddie Grays rap sheet is inconsequential - it was not the means to his end, at the time the police targeted him. You are not guilty until proven innocent. I think we collectively forget that.

The lens of white privelige exists in a way that they can compartmentalize other people's experience. They can only see things based on how they themselves would act, respond or behave.

If we live in a country where you are innocent until proven guilty, I guess that's not the case for police officers.

And to generalize that all police are bad is just as ignorant.

The system failed him? Really... The system that provides welfare, food stamps, housing and now health insurance. So people can hang out and not have ANY motivation to get a job because they get a hand out. The system failed him? No the system fails people who bother to get an education and bust their asses to go to work everyday and watch 50% of their paycheck gone to taxes before they even get it in their pocket...

So Im sorry Im SOOO sick of hearing how the system failed.

I have never been shot at or beaten or mistreated by cops because when Im pulled over. I pull over. I listen to the officer. I respect them. I don't run from them. I RESPECT THEM.

Are there bad officers? Absolutely! I don't disagree with that. BUT that doesn't give anyone the right to generalize ALL. And the same goes for the black race. A few bad does not mean all are bad. BUT give me a break with Freddie Grey was a poor innocent man. He was a career criminal. PERIOD. It does change everything. It does not mean that he deserved to die, he does not. NO ONE DOES. BUT it does change the way officers are going to react to him. Do you know how many criminals that get arrested try to get out of getting booked by saying they are hurt? or their wrists hurt, the cuffs are too tight. I need a hospital. They play it up if they think people are watching.
And now everyone has a phone to video tape them.
Do you know what it feels like to go out on the streets to protect people that hate you? to get paid dirt $? Then be told YOUR the problem. People who videotape things and take it out of context.

how about look at the statistics for black on black crime? In any city including Baltimore... IT FAR FAR FAR OUTWEIGHS the # of people killed by cops. Where are the riots? Where is the outrage? In the city of Baltimore look at what those people did to their own community? Their community that is so poor... They destroyed small businesses of people that live in their own community. They destroyed a brand new senior center that was built to help the elderly of their own community. The CVS that provides medicine to the people of their community.

Everyone is born with choices. Choices to do the right thing, or break the law. I am sorry but him growing up with lead paint on his walls is not an excuse to have the wrap sheet he does. He chose to live that life.

This country gives more than enough opportunity to get yourself out of lead paint walls. You either choose to accept the help, or you choose to break the law. There are plenty hard working people living in Baltimore who go to work, put food on their families table, and live a law abiding life.

I will never feel sorry for the career criminal. There are ways out, he chose the wrong way.

Nowhere is it stated that ALL police officers are bad.

Yes, the system failed him. There was a good article about lead poisoning in the Washington Post recently. Lead

Do you know what it's like to grow up in poverty like he did? I don't. I'm tired of people thinking people on welfare can just get out of it easily by simply not choosing to stay there. It's a very simplistic way of thinking. Have you had a look at welfare statistics? It's not that easy. The welfare system in the US is not good. It needs more.

And trust me, I know what it's like to lose 50% taxes of salary. I live in a country where the rate is 40-50%. It's not that high in the US. I don't mind paying that much in taxes. You know why? Because the tax dollars are going toward a much better welfare system that works.

And since you brought up taxes: You do know that your tax dollars are going for various lawsuits of police brutality? The US is paying MILLIONS Edit:BILLIONS. These millions could be used to help poor communities. The death of Freddie Gray is just a symptom of a larger, more complicated problem.

I have respect for police officers, but I do not have respect for police brutality.

I don't know much about the police officer that got shot. But it's a shame. It's not less brutal than any other killing. I'm not comparing which death is worse. I do, however, feel that by people saying he had a record, so this is why it happened as insensitive. It's a life. No one's life is less / more important than any one else's.

Maybe, I'm not making myself clear, but I'm also not saying that the system failed them and they had no choice is an excuse. I'm just saying it's there. It's a symptom of a multi-faceted problem.

It's something I can't ever fully understand (because I'm not living in poverty), but I can be understanding about it.

No one is comparing this to the NYPD officer and it's not apples to apples. It's inflammatory to make such sweeping generalizations.

...

This time it cost a mans life, I am sorry for him, but his wrap sheet is beyond ridiculous. It is sad to say, and this doesn't justify anything at all, but a man with a wrap sheet like that is going to wind up dead somehow, or a lifer in prison.

...

So excuse me if I don't have as much remorse for a career criminal, because if he lived his life like a regular citizen, he would be alive today.

There are poor criminals and rich criminals. I don't care if you live in a mansion or a housing project, YOU make your own choices.

The "system" failed him, so he had no choice but to have a rap sheet a mile long? Sorry, that excuse doesn't fly with me. It just plays into the attitude of today's society that it is everyone else's fault but your own. Plenty of people who came from poverty rose above it and made themselves productive members of society. Yes, it is tougher for them than for someone from a middle- or upper-class area, but it can be done.

Prosecutors Charge 6 Baltimore Officers in Freddie Gray Death

So now lead poisoning is making people unable to go to school or get a job???
So the system and lead poison made Freddie gray a drug dealer and burglar... or anyone else that CHOOSES this path. Does he have any responsibility for his own behavior???

LIFE IS ALL ABOUT CHOICES.

how about people stop making excuses and start making positive choices???

I love how everyone else is to blame to peoples poor choices and behavior...

I don't come from $. I don't come from privalage. I come from a household of 2 hard working parents. Parents who both worked full time. My father worked 14 hour days until he was 70 years old. 70!!!!! Not in some fancy office. He didn't have a great job. He didn't make a lot of $. He only stopped working when he became sick.

My mother worked full time until she was 73. 73!!!
Waking up everyday at 530am. EVERYDAY. To come home clean the house and cook dinner. EVERYDAY.
I barely saw my father as a child because he worked such long hours.
They made rules in my house. I had to be home at a certain hour. If I said I was somewhere they checked on me. They called my friends parents.
I rebelled. I did bad things. BUT THEN I REALIZED I HAD A CHOICE. I could continue down a bad path or I could change. I could want better for myself. I wanted better. So I cut my stupid BS out. Took responsibility for myself.
I got a job at 16 years old. I have worked and continue to work my entire life. I bust my a$$ as does my husband to provide a nice life for our daughter. We went to school. We worked really hard. I could have hung out with the kids doing wrong in the street BUT I MADE A CHOICE...
I didn't go away to college. I went to local community college.

I have NEVER expected a hand out. I have NEVER blamed anyone for poor choices I made as a teenager when I cut out of class. I NEVER expected the govt to support me. I worked for everything I have and I DO HAVE A PROBLEM losing half my paycheck to a system that has people who take advantage of it and then tell me they need more. WHY DOES A HEALTHY 20 something or 30 something person not have a job? I DONT CARE IF THEY ARE WORKING AT MCDONALDS... WORKING provides you with self esteem. Purpose. Motivation. Responsibility. Respect. Lessons that life on the streets cannot teach them.

Funny how all the people who have a problem with authority are the same people with long rap sheets who are doing illegal things...

And moreso, this way of thinking of blaming everyone but the person is why things will never change.

I think it comes down to a career criminal being arrested AGAIN, and cops not following protocol 100% . That does not make them bad cops.

Exactly. I have to agree with this.

I'd like to answer this question. I grew up poor. The kind of poor that has the lights off, hoping the landlord will give us a few months to catch up and eating homemade pancakes and/or pasta for dinner. A LOT.

My family obeyed the law. We had trouble qualifying for government help and what we did get, paid for nothing. Everyone worked their butts off bc they had to. My siblings dropped out of school when my father got sick and couldn't work anymore. They all worked in a factory and made peanuts, but we still had a home to live in and food to eat. One of my siblings got in trouble with the law. Mostly petty stuff and then big time when he got older. He served time and learned his lesson.

There's so much more, but I think you see my point.

There are CHOICES everyone makes. Could the 6 of us as a family just let the landlord try and kick us out and live there rent free? Could my mother have just stopped working and gotten us more money from the government? Yes. She sure could have. But the example shown to us by our parents, NOT BY THE STATE, THE SCHOOLS, THE GOVERNMENT, taught us how to make the right choices. Even though it's hard. Even though it's not fair. Life isn't always fair. But if you choose to live in sh!t, you will never rise above it.

3 of the 6 officers were black.

And?

Just updating the post since the post was about officers being charged. It was just released when I wrote it.

But just to add to your "AND", since 3 were black, I guess it wasn't just white cops targeting a black man, because that is how the picture is always painted.

Well, I think the point of the post was police brutality, not white brutality.

ETA: I do still think it is a race issue because take a look at the demographic of the communities this happens in. Just because some of the officers are black, doesn't exclude it from being a race issue. Racism can exist in a race as well.

His rap sheet was filled with non violent posession charges. He was probably a drug addict.

I didn't say that lead caused this. I said that the community is suffering from this level of poverty. A poverty that you or me cannot imagine.

I came from the same background as you- parents worked, I started working at 12 (paper route) , etc. I did stupid stuff as a teenager. I take responsibility for it.

I'm also not blind to the fact that others were not born into the same situation. I didn't grow up in an area with abandoned buildings, 50% unemployment rate, and a poor school system.

Get a job at McDonald's is not an answer to this problem.

If you think everyone has the same fair shake at a good life, you're wrong.

If you think everyone has the same opportunities, you're wrong.

If you think school systems, housing, assistance and poverty is the same for everyone, you're wrong.

Get off LIF, turn off Fox News and educate yourselves on the world we live in.
