I originally thought you were just a mom that might be a little up tight about what they give their children (as am I at times) and now I see why you posted what you did. I wish you all the best
What is wrong with a mom who is "a little up tight" about what they give their children? Should I not try to protect my children from getting cancer, or at least aiding in it, BEFORE it happens? Should I wait for them to be diagnosed and then be like oh look all those things I was feeding you, we now need to stop eating? That is a silly remark. Just because the girl/woman who said that had cancer, it makes it acceptable now? If I was her, I would be offended.

Re: Free Cone Day at Carvel today
I can't speak for anyone else but I'm WAY uptight about what my son eats --- like to the point where it puts a lot of people off or I get the "what's the big deal you maniac?" eye rolls from tons of people... especially on my ex-DH's side of the family. Thankfully my ex-DH is just like me in our thinking that everything that goes into my son's body matters and counts in terms of being as safe and natural as possible...
All that being said, I didn't take what the above poster said in a negative way or as a jab - I'm SO that mom - I'm SO that mom who didn't even give her son birthday cake on his first birthday because of the sugar that was in it... I gave him fresh fruit But I didn't take what she said badly -- I know what she means and I agree. And I can also see your point too Bayside, totally.
But I truly don't think she meant malice.
I'll go back to minding my own business now that I stuck my nose in.

Re: Free Cone Day at Carvel today
No one was arguing for the health benefits of Carvel.
But an ice cream cone once in a blue moon isn't going to give your child cancer.

Free Cone Day at Carvel today
it think it is good to be conscious of ingredients. it's not that having a carvel cone once in while will give you cancer- it's that everything you consume has a list of 50 plus ingredients. so the cone plus this and that and this beverage everyday, can probably do a number on your body.
I am a label reader but I def indulge and let my kids indulge. When I buy ice cream, I try to buy a brand that has literally 5 ingredient. Breyers or Turkey hill has a more "natural" brand. and you know what, I find that food with less ingredients taste better! I can now taste artificial crap right away. doesn't make me a better person, but I like being aware of these things.

No thank you! Free chemicals in fake food, more like. Have you ever read what's in that stuff? It isn't ice cream. I won't let my family touch it.
Yay for you!!
I'm using the free cone to bribe my DD to sit nicely for her vaccines (more poison I allow into her body).
Pre being I mom I would have but now I'm like

Re: Free Cone Day at Carvel today
Here is the thing. Moderation is key. I firmly believe you have to teach your children this above anything else.
Should you eat McD's and Carvel every single day? Of course not.
Should you get piss asss drunk every night? Of course not.
But having a treat once in a while will NEVER harm you- regardless of what is in that treat- short of rat poison.
Cake on your birthday, a glass of wine when eating out, a splurge meal here and there, McD's every now and then.
Even nutritionists and trainers will tell you that- Chris and Heidi Powell who are celeb trainers encourage their weight loss clients to take a "cheat" day or a "reward" day. I just read an article about it last night. They allow up to 1000 extra calories of whatever you want on your reward day And their clients still get healthy and still lose weight. Their reasoning is if you deny yourself anything, you will end up wanting it more and end up binging and sabotaging yourself.
It is unrealistic to think you will NEVER eat Carvel, never eat fast food, never eat a french fry, never have a Christmas cookie or whatever.
Teaching your children that life is all about MODERATION is to me, more important than never giving them a piece of junk food;

Free Cone Day at Carvel today
No offense taken. I have enjoyed this thread enormously. I have been wondering with a degree of glee which option a pervious poster's DH choose, given the choice between a cone or a BJ.
I give my kids ice-cream, but I check ingredients to see what's in it to be sure it's really ice cream and not just a frozen dessert product laced with chemicals before buying it. I know too many people with kids, and also young people, that have had cancer. My doctors have told me that while no one knows for certain what causes cancer, the general feeling in the field is that it is not one single thing, that several things may need to come together to trigger its growing. They are concerned that chemicals put in processed foods and in products we use on our bodies, and the antibiotics and hormones in non-organic meats, dairy and eggs might be contributing factors. Because of that, I have been told to avoid them. If that is good practice for me, it has to be good for my family.

About a year and a half ago, I stopped drinking sodas and stopped buying perdue chicken. I get (not organic) free-range, antibiotic and hormone free chicken (still doesn't say organic though). I feel incredibly different AND it wasn't long after I made those changes that I had my successful pregnancy. Coincidence? Possibly, but I doubt it.
That said, I do indulge in some Starbucks toffee nut lattes, which I know are HORRIBLE and contain tons of chemicals, but it's one of my very few vices. I hate to be like this, but after quitting smoking, I needed something to hold me over!

My boyfriend thinks outside the box.

Re: Free Cone Day at Carvel today
10000 percent! Especially the moderation, I did not learn this as a kid and ate junk food in excess and gained so much weight in my 20s! Now that I lost the weight, this is what I try to teach my son and DH! My son is a glutton, and will keep on eating till it makes him sick if I allow it. And I'm talking about anything, not just junk food. I think this stems from his foster home days.

Just like everyone. You do what feels right for you and your family!
ETS: as for the original topic. I rarely have ice cream. Just not a huge fan of it. And if I do. It's not Carvel.

I totally agree with you.
I think your view is different when you've had cancer. Or your spouse has had cancer and so you're all for a weekly cheat day. Ice cream, cookies, pizza a burger...the difference in my household is we eat cookies without chemicals. But that is because of my experience with cancer. With several family members surviving cancer too it's a family wide practice. But if you've been lucky enough where it hasn't directly effected you then maybe it's not a big deal.
My daughter can have all the ice cream she wants! But having cancer being in her direct line of genetics makes me just check ingredients first.
