Does Anyone Buy Puffins Cereal for their kids? Dead Mouse in Ours
Just passing this along. This is my own experience! Yesterday we purchased a box of Barbara's Puffins cereal from the store (my son has been eating this stuff daily). Upon opening the sealed inner package, there was a foul odor, and it was discovered that there was a DEAD MOUSE in the cereal!! The package had not been opened at all, so it was obviously IN the cereal in the manufacturing facility, then bagged and sealed. I initially called the company, they didn't answer, was put on hold for a long time and couldn't wait. In the interim, I posted on their FB page along with pictures. Finally spoke with them via phone later in the day, and they are sending out a mailer to send the mouse back.
TODAY I see they responded to my post on FB, but subsequently deleted my original post and pictures, and have actually disabled pictures from being posted on their page. I find that a little shady. Yes I know they need to investigate, but my post was very calm and factual.
They are supposed to be a non-gmo, high quality cereal, but they aren't supposed to have dead mice in there. I discovered by reading their wall that another FB poster had said a couple of months ago their Puffins had a strong soap like odor, and burned their mouth when eating it.
So beware! Check your packages! It's a good thing we were emptying the bag INTO our cereal dispenser and noticed it, rather than my son pouring his cereal from the box and finding this!!
I should also point out that we have asked for absolutely nothing from the company. I don't want anything. I want them to know this is disgusting, unacceptable, and they have lost a customer!
I called the FDA also, not sure if they even do anything, but figured I had to let them know!

That is so gross! I would harass them on social media until you get an answer. My friend had to do such Bc alitalia lost her stroller on the way there and car seat on the way back. I think taking it to social media can move things along quickly. I would repost your original message and write things like why did you delete my post?

I really know the answer, they have mice in their plants, it climbed in the machines and died. But....they will never admit they have a critter problem, you know? I don't even want anything, I just want OTHER people to know to check their bags!!

I just got off the phone with the FDA. Very impressed by their speedy response, as I just left a message before I posted this. She took all the info, and I emailed her the pictures! I don't think the company would report this to the FDA themselves!

They definitely disabled it, but I see they have now enabled pictures to be posted. Probably because I called them out on it in another post! Which is now deleted!

That is too gross for words! Thank you for posting AND for falling the FDA! They need to have their facility investigated. I know things happen but holy crap, that is just beyond disgusting. Thank God you were putting it in another container! We'd have eaten it straight from the box (not that I've ever bought this brand and now never will) and who knows when it would have been discovered. Thinking we need a cereal container now. . .
I'm wondering if you should also call the dept of health in whatever area this is made?

So they have now "unhidden" my post from their page from yesterday. Because it's back up there along with enabled photo comments. I'm glad they thought it was in their best interest to unhide it!!

Big factory and with modern tech .. less human interaction.
This really doesn't surprise me. I'd have gone back to the store, demanded a refund.
Glad they are trying to handle this tho. That's very encouraging
ETA: Sorry I should clarify.. I did product recall claims. LOL folks would MAIL us all sorts of packaged food finds. The ketchup bottle filled with bugs was the WORST. I could see them teaming inside, no way I was going to open it. I had teeth mailed to me with proof of life style photos and an olive pit. I have seen dead mice pieces in all sorts of packaging. The fact it was the whole mouse is pretty interesting actually. Small guy. Generally they run when the machinery starts up. Guess he got stuck and suffocated.
Not much grosses me out when it comes to any processed foods.
