Definite allergic reaction, but I dont know from what

I am going to call my sons allergist on Monday when they are open (he has environmental, but this is the first reaction to food, hes 7). The last 4 times he has had coke (in the last two days) he broke out in hives around his eyes. There is obviously something in the coke he is allergic too. The first time was one small hive, and I didnt think anything of it. The second time, still one hive, but larger on his entire brow bone, then it happened two more times and the last time, both his eyes blew up. Thats when we made the coke connection bc he had just had like half a bottle and it happened within minutes. Im a nervous wreck to give him anything now bc I dont know what it could be!! Anyone ever have this happen or know someone who has and what it can be? He has been eating and drinking everything else all day with no issue. So far, seems to specifically be Classic Coke. Any ideas?

Does he have asthma also? I think there is a cone toon between coke/asthma/aspirin allergy? Has he ever had any issues with Motrin or Advil? That could be it. A caffeine allergy is also a possibility.

It could be from the food coloring.....

FOOD COLORINGS: Tartrazine (FD&C Yellow Dye No. 5), a food dye, has been long known to cause hives, particularly in children. This dye is added to nearly every packaged food as well as to some drugs. People who are sensitive to aspirin are especially likely to be sensitive to tartrazine. Foods that commonly contain tartrazine include ice cream, margarine, cake mixes, cloves, jam and jelly, bakery goods except plain bread, Jell-O, candies, gum, hot dogs, oil of wintergreen, toothpaste, mint flavors, lozenges, mouthwash, and lunch meats such as salami and bologna. The following liquids also commonly contain tartrazine: cider and cider vinegars, wine and wine vinegars, Kool-Aid and similar beverages, soda and soft drinks, gin and all distilled alcoholic beverages (except vodka), all tea, beer, diet drinks and supplements, and birch beer.

There are a lot of chemicals in coke and some protected as a trade secret. It would probably be pretty hard to isolate what part is giving him trouble. I would suggest buying an all natural coke if he really likes to drink it and see how he deals with that. My daughter also has asthma. She also doesn't have asthma attacks but every cold turns into a horrible fought with nebulizer and steroids. We realized she is allergic to an antibiotic. The first time she has no reaction. The second time she broke out in a rash. It wasn't until the third time that the rash came back combined with vomiting that we made the connection.

So sometimes as allergy can get progressively worse each time you introduce it.

If he has never had an issue with caffeine in other things (tea, chocolate, etc.) then I highly doubt he is allergic to the caffeine. Coke has tons of chemicals in it, so it's probably one of those. I would just quit giving him Coke and see if anything else gives him trouble.
