How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

I'm just curious because I feel like no one in our extended families understood when we said we had to leave because dd was exhausted from all the excitement and it was already hours past her bedtime. We don't have the kind of kid who will just fall asleep anywhere. She gets very excited and doesn't want to miss anything. And she usually never ever wants to leave a party or family gathering. But in the middle of Christmas dinner she was clinging to me saying "home...tired" Dh and I felt so bad for her and we still had two more days of family gatherings so we wanted her to get home and get some sleep. We were frustrated that everyone seemed to think it was weird that we were leaving "so early". And we actually waited a full hour from the time we said we had to leave until we actually left because they said they wanted to give dd her gifts but then never brought them out. So finally we just said goodbye and they quickly gave her her gifts, but they seemed annoyed. Chat Icon

Dh says we did the right thing, but I felt bad anyway. Just curious if anyone else had a similar situation, or what you do when your child is exhausted but the party isn't over yet?

How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

Family holidays annoy me since having dd. nobody adjusts the littlest bit to her and expect us/her to adjust to them. There have been countless times I was in the dining room feeding dinner all by myself while everyone socialized in the living room bc dd was hungry and it was already way past when she normally eats. Then I would end up having to leave early with her and not even getting to eat dinner myself.

I think you did the right thing. Your child your way. You can only accommodate so much with a toddler. People need to meet half way.

You did the right thing. Does anyone else in the family have kids? If not they probably wouldn't understand. I'd rather leave then have DS be a cranky tired mess. On xmas eve we left around 9-915 and that was past his bedtime. Other people stayed but we didn't care.

We go with the flow. DS is almost 20mo and is not the type to just fall asleep anywhere either. If we know we'll be out late, we try to give him a later nap so he gets some rest.

DHs family does everything very late. Christmas Eve dinner comes out around 10, presents at midnight. By the time we were done opening gifts and said goodbye, it was 1:30am. It's only a couple of times a year, and it's tradition, so we just adapt.

My family does everything early, so no issues there.

We don't an around Ds. We just roll with it and we wouldn't leave just cause he was getting tired. Because we have always been like this ds has adapted pretty well.

We see how long DD can take it and base it off that. I think she made it to 9:30 on Christmas Eve and slept until 8:30 Christmas morning, which was glorious! We'll do the same for New Years.

We let her stay up pretty late. We got home pretty late from a Christmas Eve party, around 2am. She fell asleep over there around midnight. She goes to be pretty late most nights anyway but on the flip side she sleeps until 9:30 which is a dream for me lol

Our kids have always rolled with it.
When exhausted, they will fall asleep at parties (this is very rare though).
Our lives are so complicated, we can't revolve around nap or bedtimes.

DD's normal bedtime is 8:30. She stays up until 9 or 9:30 if we're out or have company but that's it. I don't have any desire to be out or entertain later than that myself and I don't see any reason to make DD miserably tired either. She's waaay too social to just go lay down if we're out. She can rally really well so other people don't understand how much we'd pay for it later.

DD's usual bedtime is 7pm but the latest she can last is 8-8:30pm. We dont stay out any later than that. She would never fall asleep while out and she just needs her sleep or she is tired and cranky the next day.

With DS we used to adhere more to his bedtime. I was definitely a strict first-time parent. After having DD, we tend to go with the flow more. Yes, sometimes they get cranky and overtired but luckily they will fall asleep pretty much anywhere if they are exhausted. If not, lots of snuggles usually help. It's only once a year, I don't see the big deal in a late bedtime, especially when hanging out with family.

How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

There have been times we have had to leave things early because dd is so tired and behaving soo badly at that point its not enjoyable. I feel bad for her because I know shes not behaving badly just to behave badly shes just overtired.
She was up until 10 on xmas eve and xmas day, that's about 2.5-3 hours past her bedtime. We had her take a nap, which she normally does not do, but we made her take one both days to help her stay up. She slept late the next morning which is not like her so that was great.
For a holiday I will allow her to stay up late. Otherwise Im a stickler about her bedtime schedule.

Re: How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

We didn't get home until 1:15 AM on Christmas Eve and 10:30 PM on Christmas. Both nights the boys lasted until the car ride home. They were a little off yesterday, my 3.5 yr old took a 3 hour nap on the couch, which never happens, and my 21 month old slept until 9:45 AM. But today they were back to normal. We are strict with 8:00 bedtimes but bend the rules for special occasions.

I would have left if dd asked to go home because she is tired. My dd is a night owl though especially when people are around. Christmas Eve was 1130 then she slept till 930. There are.tons of little kids in my family and everyone adapts. We all watch.the.kids to see how they are handling it.

8:00 PM the latest. She normally goes to sleep between 7-7:30 and if it's any later than that she doesn't sleep well.

We don't enforce any bedtimes on holidays. Her normal bedtime is 7:30 she stayed up to 10:45. She climbed up and dh lap and just passes out. My 4 year old was up to 12. Just because we have kids doesn't mean we have to stop the celebrations. They took good naps on Christmas Day.

Re: How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

Rules don't apply in our family during the holidays unless one of the kids is sick or something.

Most years my kids are up until 2am on Christmas eve and NYE. Christmas day is like 11pm at least.

But there have been years when I went in to my niece's bedroom or something and slept with one of the kids.

Either way, you have to do what is best for you and your family regardless of what others think!

Do what's best for your family. If my daughter was saying "home, tired" I would probably leave too.
Christmas eve my 18 month old stayed up until like 1am...then slept until 10am the next day. Christmas she was up until about 10/11. But she was happy and playing. If she was upset or saying she wanted to go home, I would have left my family gatherings earlier.

Normally she is in bed by 8-815am during the week. For Xmas Eve she went to bed at 11am and Xmas day night at 1030am. She was fine and not acting tired and then slept in Christmas am until 1030am and the day after until 930am.

We were getting home by 9. Their normal bed time is 7:15/7:30. We put them in pjs and most times they fell asleep in the car and we just transferred to cribs.

It's. only a couple times a year so we stay and have a good time. My daughter is not the type to want to leave anywhere though, she likes parties and gatherings, so she is good to go. I wasn't raised to leave early either, we stayed till my parents were ready to go.

We don't go crazy, but we don't leave because of bedtime on holidays. There are things during the year (holidays, parties, birthdays) that call for staying out later. My family isn't full of night owls, so we only stay out until 9/10. DS1 goes to bed at 730 on a normal day. Sometimes he gets cranky, but he's often busy playing with his cousins and doesn't want to go!
