Would you skip Old San Juan and just stick to the pools/beaches?

We have plans to go to Puerto Rico this fall for 5 days. We are staying at El Conquistador, which is a pool/beach/golf resort. I originally planned to break up our trip and spend some time in Old San Juan area. Thought it would be good for the kids (ages 3 and 5). DH thinks we should skip Old San Juan and go straight to the resort and stay there.

WWYD? SKip Old San Juan?

I have already been to PR a few times and been to Old San Juan. I don't really care if we go or not. I thought it would be good to expose the kids to some culture.

I would spend at least part of a day there - go to the fort and see some of the "city"

I honestly don't even remember what we did in Old San Juan. I vaugely recall a fort, a lot of pigeons, a guy with a parrot, lots of traffic, and Ben and Jerry's. So, I guess I would say skippable since it wasn't too memorable for me. It sounds like you are more familiar with it and you would know if your kids would enjoy it.

El Conquistador has a lot going on. You may be able to go straight there and have plenty to do/see

DH's friend used to live in PR and said El Conquistador had like 18 pools and an amazing beach. Our trip is short so I'm sure the resort would keep us busy enough.

I remember seeing people flying kites around the fort area. I can't remember much else. I don't remember the restaurants being anything special. As of now, we are leaning towards skipping Old San Juan and going straight to the resort.

I would spend one day in Old San Juan. Those forts are really interesting and I think it would be a good experience for the kids.

Yes I would spend a day in old San Juan. The fort and architecture are both really interesting.

I'm not sure where this resort is but I'm assuming it's fairly close to San Juan? If so, I would probably go for at least a few hours. While not necessarily memorable for adults, I think It'll be nice for your kids to see and experience it.

Completely random, but if you like coach, they have a store in San Juan that has the cheapest prices I've ever seen in my life. Most of my bags are from that store. :)

I loved going to the fort...I think it would be a nice half day for the kids.

For 5 days yes I would take a half day and go. If you were saying it was a long 3 day weekend then I'd say skip it, but there's a lot to do and you don't have to spend the day there. Walk around, have lunch, sightsee and come back to your resort in time for some beach time and dinner.

ITA. Not like you would need to be at a different hotel - just go for a few hours.

If I remember correctly El Conquistador is not that close to Old San Juan its about 20 minutes away. If you already have been to Old San Juan I would skip it. Old San Juan is mostly the fort, shopping nightlife and restaurants.

Your kids might enjoy the Fort. Its nice to look at the ocean from there but they wouldn't miss out on anything since they are too young to understand the history. They might enjoy the rain forest more if anything.
