Would you ever put dirt in a sand box?

My son has an obsession with digging in the dirt! I am getting a sandbox from someone. Has anyone actually put dirt in it rather than sand?

No' they sell play sand which is clean. Dirt will be very messy...

I don't care about a mess. Kids get messy and right now he keeps digging spots on my lawn. c I just want to make sure there is nothing harmful in it.

We never considered dirt... but we got pebbles and put them in a sand box instead of sand which I hate. Kids love it!

If that's what he likes then that's what I would put, I actually hate sand you can never get rid of it I would prefer dirt

I would use dirt. We have sand but if my kids wanted dirt than I'd fill it with dirt. I could care less about them getting dirty outside and like pp said sand is a pain to get rid of later on down the road.

I would probably try sand first just to see if i could get away with it. If he was still digging in the yard then i would switch over to dirt. Sand is just so much easier to clean.

I say do the dirt. My neighbor actually built a dirt box and all the kids in the neighborhood love it.

I think as long as it's organic I would do it. Dirt is more fun! I just wouldn't fill the box up with miracle grow or anything with pesticides/chemicals.

Who cares if he gets dirty? You'd have to bathe him after time in a sandbox too.

1. You can always use the dirt later on
2. You don't have to worry about cats using your 'sandbox' as a litter box!
