For me, personally, if a friend was coming over for a play date and asked me to lock up my dog, I would either say we could meet somewhere else, or they could play in my kid's bedroom, where the dog doesn't go. I wouldn't lock up my dog...I don't for any guests. I wouldn't be mad. I know some people are afraid of dogs for whatever reason. But I won't "punish" my dog for someone else's fear either.

That is ridiculous. It's not punishing your dog. It's making your guests feel comfortable. Dogs are animals, not humans.

I actually agree with not locking up the dog. I know they're animals, BUT they're my family. I wouldn't be offended if someone is scared, I would just meet them somewhere else. It's their house and they don't understand it's not punishment.

So what if meeting somewhere else isn't an option? What if you're hosting something like a holiday in your home and you have a family member who is terrified of dogs? You would rather they NOT come then put your dog in another room? That is ridiculous.

I host holidays and parties often, luckily my biggest dog is only 40 pounds and she is very timid and kind of hides in a corner (she was a rescue) so I have never had that issue. But I wouldn't lock her up if it was an issue. I would think it's ridiculous that someone would expect me to lock up a loved member of my family.

Pit Bull and play dates?

But with that being said..My DH really wants a pitt, he grew up with them, but I won't get one purely bc we have people over often and I think too many people are scared of the breed and don't want people scared to be here.

I think it's little inconsiderate that you wouldn't respect the feelings of a guest in your home. Sorry, but it's how I feel.

I have a cousin that use to be terrified of dogs, when we hosted things at our home I put the dog somewhere else so she would be comfortable. Like I said, my dog is a small 20lb mushball, but that doesn't matter much to someone who is afraid.

I love my dog but she's a dog. No harm is done to her by keeping her somewhere else in the house for a few hours where she is happy and content.

ETA - By "lock up" I don't literally mean lock up. My dog is just put in another room of the house with her bed. It's not upsetting for her, she's comfy and resting. Chat Icon

I think I would explain my concern about the dog and the fact that my LO is afraid of them. Hopefully she would get the hint and offer to crate the dog or ensure the kids are separated. If she didnt I would suggest her LO come to my house.

As the other mother, I honestly wouldn't be offended if you expressed your concern. People really shouldn't be so sensitive - especially when someone is concerned about their child. I guess it takes a lot to offend me though. I always try to accomodate others if it doesn't hurt me or my family. I would simply crate my dog or put it outside during the playdate. As a pet owner - I really don't see the big deal to this. And you aren't the first person in the world to be mindful of a pit (misconception or not).

If she didn't understand/respect your concern I probably wouldn't want to associate with her anyway...

Locking up and putting the dog in another room are 2 totally different things. Like I said, my dog sort of puts herself in a comfy spot .. I wouldn't have an issue shutting a door if she was laying in her bed, but if someone expected me to crate my dog, I simply would tell them not to come, bc that's not an option.

But I can't even put my dog in another room because he will bark the entire time. My dog loves to be where we are. And while I would put him in another room for a few minutes not for an entire party etc. Its not inconsiderate of me.....you know I have a dog when you accept the invitation. i am not offended if someone can't come because of it. Just like I do not spend time in houses with cats because I am severely allergic.

They have a bad rep for good reason.

I'd be less inclined to go to a pit bull home over a golden retriever home. Sorry, but it's the truth.

From Time magazine:

Pit bulls make up only 6% of the dog population, but they’re responsible for 68% of dog attacks and 52% of dog-related deaths since 1982, according to research compiled by Merritt Clifton, editor of Animals 24-7, an animal-news organization that focuses on humane work and animal-cruelty prevention.

I really don't want this to turn into a pitbull debate but since you quoted the Time Magazine article I want to step in. Here is an excellent article from the Huffington Post that pretty much details that Charlotte Alter had no evidence to back up those statistics. I urge you to read the article. It is a shame that my 11 month old pit is deemed more agressive and a monster than most friends dogs (non-pits) that have bitten people in the past. I don't think you should ever let your guard down with your children and stranger's dogs ever, so I am not sure why the breed matters. Just my two cents.

It's not ridiculous. It's another point of view. It's my dog's home too and he would be scared if I locked him up or kept him in a room he isn't usually in for more than a few minutes. Luckily I don't have family afraid of dogs so I don't have to worry. If a new guest requested he be kept in a bedroom or something at Christmas, I wouldn't do it. I do have family with allergies. They understand the situation and take allergy meds before coming if they think they need it.

i agree. my parents had many many parties in their railroad apartment with the dog there. There was no place to lock her up or put her away. all guests came knowing this. and they all loved her. she would sit under the table and wait to be fed. no one was ever offended or afraid.

the ONLY time my dog ever got aggressive (and by that i mean growl at someone) was when she saw a homeless person, or a very drunk person come too close to my family. and then she only got that way out of her fierce loyalty and to protect us.

as to allergies: DH's cousins are allergic to cats. We have a cat, and DH's sister leaves her TWO cats at her parents often. they just buy this anti-allergy cream, put it under their nose before they show up, and are fine.

we have pets, they are important to us. When you visit, expect them to be in their home. if you are uncomfortable, there is a park a few blocks away we can meet at, or a bouncy house place also close by.

Why should people have to defend themselves on this. If you want to have a pit bull thats great but I am not taking my baby around it any host should understand this and if they don't they are welcome to come to my home or we can meet at a park.

Pit Bull and play dates?

We have a pit bull, she is amazing with my boys. I would have no problems with my kids near any dog that belonged to someone who's home I was visiting. If, once we got there, one of the kids began to feel uneasy, I would ask if they could put the dog in another room. BUT, not everyone is comfortable with their kids around dogs, no one has ever asked me to put my dog away, but I would if they did.

Pit Bull and play dates?

I'm not really a fan of any dog unless it's my own. I was never really had anything bad to say about pits until our family friend got attacked. She was at her friends house, with a dog she felt totally comfortable with. She was playing with her friend and the dog snapped...just like that. They weren't tormenting the dog they were being kids playing on the swings. Can it happen with any breed..ofcourse. Is it more likely with a pit? Most likely.

If you don't go then don't go because it's a dog not because a pit.

A tiny dog can attack also and is just as likely to do so.

In reality pit bulls are very good with kids and great family dogs unlike other breeds

I agree...
My sister had a pit. Raised the dog. Yes, they snap. I've seen the dog try to attack random people.
I never brought my kids in her house with the dog there.
I've also seen the results of pit attacks. Not pretty. Haven't seen too many kids mauled by other dogs, though I'm sure it could happen.

It's just not worth it.

I agree that I do not think those statistics are accurate.

I absolutely love my dogs but, I put them in another room when I have playdates/holidays. And believe it or not, it is for their safety!! I do not want them eating table food or interacting with children that don't know how to properly interact with dogs!!!

Pits get a bad rap. Any dog can bite. Every decade it was a new dog to avoid---from dobermans, to shepards, now Ive even recently heard boxers!! Most bites to children happen when the kid isn't supervised or the humans do not see the dog's warning signs.

Some of the fear of Pits stems from dog fighting. 'Pits' (which make up numerous breeds) are prey driven-not human driven. If you read about dog fighting, that's why it is so hard to get dog's to fight each other--they are not meant to fight one another and the dog's that dog fighters are successful at making fighters must be good around humans-since humans are in the 'pit' with them.
Sorry for my tangent!
I just think that learning about the breed and experiencing them first hand will help to overcome the fear or misconceptions one might have!

Ita. When people come over I lock my giant dog in my bedroom. She lays on my bed and watches tv. Not like I chain her in the basement or something.

Regardless of the breed, if you are uncomfortable with a dog around your child then tell the host. I have a dog and have no issue putting the dog in a different room when people come over if they are not "dog" people. Personally, even though my dog is super sweet, I'd prefer him to be away from the kids because you never know what could happen when the dog is around unfamiliar people. It has nothing to do with breeds.

ITA. I have a pit mix and even though he's a mush with my kids, I crate him when unfamiliar friends come over.
I would not be offended if a playdate mom asked me to put the dog in another room or if she said she didn't want to come.

Re: Pit Bull and play dates?

I can't believe how sensitive people are getting over this topic. I LOVE animals! Especially dogs, but if I don't feel comfortable around a big dog, small yappy dog, etc... yes, I would ask a friend if they could put the dog in another room. My LO comes first.
Something can happen. Not just looking out for my LO, but for the animal as well. My IL's dog bit my son once. He was a baby and sitting up at the time just flapping his arms around and babbling. Their dog (who isn't a big dog) just freaked a bit and bit him. He wasn't doing anything to the dog. I do watch my children and make sure they won't hurt animals, but I'm looking out for both the animal and my child. I don't want to sit at a playdate the entire time on top of my kid to make sure he doesn't grab the dog or the dog come to him and growl.

Yes, your animal is your family. I get it, but you don't take them out in public for everything. They can get locked in the house, a room or a crate for a time. You obviously don't do that to your children.
Maybe all your friends and family members are fine with the dogs now in your life, but your child will one day meet a new friend that could have a fear of dogs. Are you not going to allow your LO to have their friend over bc of this?

Yes, your animal is your family. I get it, but you don't take them out in public for everything. They can get locked in the house, a room or a crate for a time. You obviously don't do that to your children.
Maybe all your friends and family members are fine with the dogs now in your life, but your child will one day meet a new friend that could have a fear of dogs. Are you not going to allow your LO to have their friend over bc of this?

But having your dog have roam of the house when you aren't there isn't the same as locking them in a room when there are people in the house.

If you put my dog in another room with the door closed or even outside when we are in he will bark for the entire time (and I know others that are like this) He barks because he wants to be around people. If we are outside and he is in he will stand at the door and bark until we let him out. By putting him away it make for a very horrible day. So people know if you have issues with my dog you just don't come. Fortunately we have not had the issue other than one person who is allergic and he only comes to our house in the summer time when we can be outside.

Its not being rude to my guests its just how my house runs. I don't think anyone would want to be at my house or any other with a dog barking for 3 hours because all he wants is to be with people.

I don't think I'm being sensitive. It's not even that I'm offended. It's just the way my house works. I don't crate my dog, ever.don't even have a crate. If my kid wanted a friend over and their friend was scared of dogs, they could easily play in her bedroom or in the play room, where the dog doesn't usually go. I guess the way my house is set up there are plenty of places that my dog just doesn't really go, but I'm not going to lock him out of the areas that he's most comfortable. So if they wanted to watch a movie, sorry, my dog will likely be on the couch. They could watch in my bedroom or on an ipad. I guess all of this is to say there is always a solution. If you're scared of dogs, tell the host you're scared and let him/her come up with a solution that you are comfortable with, but don't expect to dictate the way it is handled if you want to go over.
