Balcony Stateroom with a toddler
My parents have very generously offered to take my family and my brother's family on a cruise next June. My mother wants to get balcony staterooms but I'm a little concerned since I'll have a 3 1/2 year old. Does anyone have any experience with this? I know Disney Cruise Ships have child safety locks but this would likely be on a Norwegian ship. Is there something I can bring to add extra security to the door?

Balcony Stateroom with a toddler
That would make me nervous but those doors are usually very heavy to slide. I would call Norwegian and see what they say/offer. I know there are alarms you can put on the door.

We are going on an royal Carib cruise and have a balcony. Never even thought about it. I have a 4 yr old and 1 1/2 yr old. I would get it

I would definitely go with a balcony. That way once your DC is sleeping at least you and DH can hang out and have a drink.

yes and this is the main reason why we got it. Our kids go to bed early and even if they are up late for them we still wanted a separate space. I'd rather not got o bed at 9 or 10.

I want to say Norwegian had locks on the balcony, like one of those sliding locks. I would definitely call and confirm that with the cruise line

Those doors are HEAVY! I'd just be careful to keep the door closed (and locked, if you're concerned) at all times. But seriously, no toddler will be able to open the door. Balcony staterooms feel more spacious, and it's nice to go outside in your own private space.

DD was a young toddler (14 months) when we were on a cruise last summer. We had a balcony stateroom. The doors are very heavy, and they have locks. I would do it again with her now at 2 without any worry. It is nice having a balcony. The room feels more spacious, and when DC is napping or sleeping, you and DH can sit outside.

Agreed!
We returned from a Norwegian cruise in December (DS was just over 2) and there was no way he was opening the door. Plus it had a lock and even while he was on the balcony with us, the railing was way over his head and DS is pretty tall. We never felt unsafe.

we went on the NCL Breakaway in December. DS was just over 3, and we had a balcony. it wasn't a problem at all. like a lot of other people said- the doors are very heavy, plus they all have locks on them. just make sure to keep it locked and you should be fine.
we're actually going on another cruise in a couple weeks with my ILs and we're getting another balcony cabin. its the only way to do a cruise with a little one, so you have a little space to get "Away" while they're sleeping at night or napping

It's not a mistake, but it will feel tight. You will feel a little stuck, not having someplace to be away from DC. Maybe your DC can fall asleep around you or with the tv on, but my boys always fell asleep better alone in a dark, quiet room. If it's in your budget, I would see if you can upgrade your room.

We have done it twice. Unless you plan on leaving your child alone on the balcony to climb the furniture you should have no trouble. Doors are very heavy. They all have some sort of locks. The railings are really high that is very hard for a child to go over. I am tall and the railings come up above my belly button. I would just not leave them alone out there. Balconies are great when your child goes to bed.

I never thought about it! I just kept thinking I prob couldn't use the balcony for half the cruise (sailing in winter from ny). I'll have to look into the upgrade.

My problem with an inside is not so much the lack of space, but the lack of light! You can wake up at 8 am and it feels like it's 3 am! There is absolutely no light and it's pitch black until you turn on a light or the TV.
That freaked me out more than anything.
It's literally like being in a closet. You have no idea what time it is.

I wouldn't worry. We just went on a cruise in May and stayed in a balcony room (DS was just over two). The lock was high up so that there was no way he could possibly reach it and the door was super heavy.
