Going PT or Becoming a SAHM if you make a great living???

Morning ladies! I went back to work FT a few weeks ago after maternity leave and pay $1,000/week for daycare (3 kids). I am finally wondering if part time would be an option for me. Even with the daycare costs it is still worth my while financially to work. Is there a certain salary you just wouldn't give up? 100k, 200k? I just don't know if I feel comfortable leaving the industry. We can afford for me to stay home but there would be a lifestyle change. I am more worried about the security my position provides. Anyone here leave a very high paying position? Thanks girls.

Going PT or Becoming a SAHM if you make a great living???

I didn't make $100k but no way Id give up that salary. Could we have lived on his income? No. Still, I worked very hard to earn my position in my industry. Those first few years of her life I was still very active. My husband and I *STILL* both take a day off for major doctor appts, we are at EVERY field trip and school party, etc. My income makes parenting easier. Yes daycare is costly but its only temporary. Its an investment. Sorry if that's not helpful.

Even if I could have been able to stay at home financially, I would not. Leaving my industry would have made it extremely difficult to re-enter later. Not impossible but painful.

Sorry but that's JMHO.

Going PT or Becoming a SAHM if you make a great living???

I left a great job with a great salary to be a sahm. For me, that's just what I wanted. These days go by so fast and they change so much on a daily basis I didn't want to miss anything. I cherish the time I have with dd. When dd and gd willing more children are older and in school I would look to go back on a part time or work from home basis.

I'm not worried about getting back into the field when the time comes bc I'm still being recruited on a weekly basis and I maintain my connections.

At the end of the day it's such a personal decision.

Editing bc a major reason I didn't go back was the commute into the city. I literally would only see my daughter on the weekends. Not a life I wanted.

Thank you. It would be hard for me to re-enter as well.

I make 6 figures and would never give it up. Part because of the money but more so because I love to work.
I would never want to try and re-enter later on. There would just be too much lost in knowledge as the market changes in my field very quickly.

The above poster made a great point, this is such a personal decision. A few of my friends also have high paying ($200 plus) careers and they do continue to work. I think now having to manage 3 small children this is getting to me a little! Just the thought of leaving the workforce at this level is very stressful.

You're an attorney right? I'm an attorney, but have been staying home for the past two years. I do plan to go back within a year because I don't want to get too rusty ;)

I am but I work for a large construction company working with their insurance group. The insurance market can change very quickly and even a year away would make a huge difference as far as knowledge. The goo thing about my job is I work 8-5 and almost never take work home with me. So its def not the typical legal job in a firm. If that what I was doing I probably would feel very different.

If you *WANT* to be a SAHM or PTWM, then you should do it, since you can afford it. It has nothing to do with your salary - it's about making yourself happy.

But if you're only considering it because daycare costs so much, then don't leave your job - you'll regret it in a few years when the kids are out of daycare.

Pretty much this. It's just the way I had always pictured my life. I can't imagine being gone 12 hours a day, commuting 2 hours a day, and having someone else be DD's main caretaker. It wasn't really an option I could wrap my head around. I love being home and while we do have to watch what we spend we get by just fine. We never lived a lavish lifestyle even when we had more than double the income so it wasn't a big adjustment for us. I will have to go back eventually but I'm hoping I can hold out until our kids are in school and find something closer to home.

I am an attorney and make a very good salary with a good amount of flexibility (I WAH 2-3x a week, sometimes 4x) and my hours arent too bad. But, I am still seriously considering going part time after DC2 is born. I know we need my income and I'm not sure I want to give up my career completely, but I want more time at home. I am spread way too thin these days and it just makes me miserable. Whats the point? I am still not 100% sure I am ready to pull the trigger even though I am pretty sure its what I want...

Personal & gotta take things into consideration:

Career re-entry is a very real factor. I could re-enter, but def not at this level. Most people who stop who I know, don't go back & if they do, change careers.

A # is all relative. Depends on lifestyle & your sig others job security.

Same with me. I have an easy commute and a lot of flexibility (I never miss a parent day at preschool).

But I also don't want to SAH...I think about going part time once in a blue moon but to cut even 20% of my salary is a good chunk of change for college!

I think it is harder to work the older they get. Working f/t with school age children requires a lot of juggling, homework, sports, etc... It was much easier when they were in daycare.

Good luck!

That's tough and I think it varied from person to person. You really have to do what's best for your family.

For me I could never quit my job. I get a great salary, benefits, a pension and free health care. It makes absolutely no sense for me to ever leave.

I somewhat agree with this - It's a very personal decision, and I DO agree that if you WANT to be a SAHM or PTWM then you shouldn't brush the idea of it JUST b/c you HAVE a great job. I know doctors who would quit in a milisecond to be SAHMs. It's just what they want -

BUT when you have a husband, and 3 kids, it's NOT just about 'making yourself happy' - Not to say you should be miserable, but sometimes in life you have to suck it up for awhile, for the 'greater good' -

For ME, I went back and forth for a short period of time when I felt very overwhelmed. But ultimately, for ME and my family - working is the best option. For the life we want to live, an the life and opprotunities we want to have and give our kids - so day to day, right now it's not the most ideal thing, but in 5, 10, 20 years ......we feel it will have been for the best -
Also, I don't want to give up my salary, all the work I've done to get to this point, my contacts, place in the industry etc - for ME being someone's Mommy and some's Wife just isn't enough - Call me selfish, but I know who I am, and I don't think I need to apologize for it. I don't ask the Dr. to explain herself when she says she would rather quit everything and SAH -

My boys are well taken care of, smart, happy, well rounded kids. They know I'm their Mom, they know I love them - there has never been ANY question as to who's 'taking care of them' or who their 'go to' person is. -

While you ultimately have to do what is best for you and your family - getting back into a high level postion after a 3 or 5 year hiatus is NOT the same thing as getting back into the workforce, period. KWIM? That who'e 'you can always get a job' attitude doesn't apply - Yes, you CAN always 'get a JOB' ......but if you want your career back ........you might want to do your best to stick it out and make it work.

I agree with this, they have so many days off/half days/ school functions / activities etc

I worked while my first DB was a baby. I started to feel like I never saw my child. Weekends and night was not enough for me, so I left a great paying job that I loved. I'm home now and not sure I'll be able to get back into my old field. I hope to go back in a year or two. I have enjoyed being home with the kids, I feel like I didn't miss anything .

Just an observation but the strange thing to me, my friends that are working are not much better off financially than my sahm friends. The day care , after care, nannies, cleaning ladies, and full day summer camps add up so much. Even people with older children, they still pay out so much $$. Also over the past 5 years, salaries have not increased much in my field and bonuses have been slashed. No pensions either. The friends that really got ahead and have $$$ are the families that watch kids for free.

Best of luck!

Going PT or Becoming a SAHM if you make a great living???

Great question. For ME and only for me, this just isn't the right time. I've clawed my way to making over $200K before 35 and am a first generation American. To me, this just isn't something you walk away from.

In my case, I work essentially a 9-5. I leave at 7.30 and am home by 6.05. I have in home care and come home to warm dinner and a happy child. I've given this alot of thought at this point I'm not ready to give up the voice that comes with bringing money to the table (not a knock on ANYONE, just my experience) especially since my son is so well cared for and in my situation, I have ample time with him. Re-entry in my field is VERY difficult, especially at this level (I work on Wall street).

I do plan to walk away once my kids are in school but for something more "low key" and local. Whether it's my own small business or a local financial advisory firm remains to be seen but that's at least ~7 years down the road.

Just want to add, the flexibility I have in my role comes from the fact that I've established my reputation and have a proven track record, also, at my level, no one really questions you if your work is valued. If I left and had to seek work elsewhere in say, 3-5 years...I'd be starting from scratch and with the added worry of early dismissal, half days ect.

I WANT very very badly to be a SAHM but I cannot afford it.
Each day is a complete struggle to get up and go to work. I feel like I get no time with my son and i will miss everything. I cry frequently but there is nothing I can do right now.

Re: Going PT or Becoming a SAHM if you make a great living???

I am struggling with the same thing. Even though we can afford it, it is financially wiser to continue to work- we can save more for retirement, go on vacations. Plus I would not have job security and would have to find another job when I decided to return to the workforce and would potentially have to take a pay cut since I get paid more than the average for my position.

However, it's a couple of short years that you can stay home with your children (depending on how many years you choose) compared to the years you would work. I dont think I would ever regret becoming a SAHM even if it meant setting myself back a couple of years in my career. I can see myself regretting NOT staying home though.

Re: Going PT or Becoming a SAHM if you make a great living???

I have chosen to continue working because I make good money, have a good working schedule, and there is virtually no re-entry for me back into my career the way it is now. I'm a teacher and I work very close to home and have good seniority so I don't have to worry about being excessed...if I left even for two years, my seniority would change and I would be at risk for excessing and if I resigned, I am not sure I would get another job, especially not as close to home as I am now. It's a hard choice.

Re: Going PT or Becoming a SAHM if you make a great living???

I have always had an extremely strong work ethic. Now that I make 6 figures and work at home I have the best of both worlds. My job just got a little more demanding as I was given some extra responsibility so my husband and I are debating if we need aftercare for our boys when they start Kindergarten. I would NEVER give up working for 2 reasons: 1-you never know what will happen in life and I always want my career to fall back on. I know many that are in unhappy marriages and have no choice but to stay. Or deaths, changes in a spouses job etc. 2-I am not cut out to be a SAHM. I have LOTS of respect for those that do

i'm making a great living.... as a SAHM. to me, you just can't put a price on raising your own children full time. I left a tenured teaching job where now i'd be making $110k...smalll sacrifice to make JMO

My price tag is saving for college, extracurricular activities, and saving for retirement so my children don't have to take care of me when I am old. We can't do those things without me working.

That is impressive actually since tenured teaching jobs are so hard to find in ny. I personally believe, like anything else, you need to weigh the pros and cons. Do what is right in your heart, and what will make your life feel fulfilled. You will either be spending more time with your kids or more time with strangers. Who will appreciate you more?
