Giving up naps at 18mo?

The past few days DS is not wanting to nap. He used to wake around 630 then nap at 10. Lately it's been moving later, he's taking longer to get to sleep. Yesterday we were home all day and I tried multiple times to get him to go to sleep, which he finally did after 2 and didn't wake up until almost 5. He goes to bed at 630-7, so this is no good.

Today I tried to put him down at 1030 and after some screaming I decided to just go run errands with him. I couldn't believe he didn't fall asleep in the car once until we were almost home. He woke when I took him out, I fed him lunch and I've been trying to get him to take a nap for an hour and a half now.

DD stopped napping around age 2 and I'm beginning to realize that he's following in her footsteps. This is awful. I will never get anything done now. Chat Icon

10:30 seems a little early for a nap. I'd try pushing the nap back about 2 hours - not as far back as 2pm, though - and see how he does. You may have to push bedtime back a bit, maybe closer to 8pm.

The fact that he's still napping, just later in the day, tells me he isn't ready to drop the nap entirely.

Just for reference, DS is also 18 months. He wakes up at 7am, naps around noon, and goes to bed around 8/8:30pm.

I agree that 10:30 seems early for a nap at 18 months and for a child with 1 nap a day.

If it helps, my DS is 17 months:

Wakes: btwn 615-745 (just depends on the day!)

naps: goes to sleep anytime from 11-3 and will sleep anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours. Day care he naps at 1215 like clockwork, at home he fights it and it is usuall 2pm.

bedtime: goes to bed at 9pm, later on wknds if we are out.

we have him in a very flexible routine! haha

maybe it's 18 month sleep regression. dd fought it but at 2 she naps 90% of the time still

He's sleeping 12 hours a day? That's pretty good... if you REALLY want the day nap, I'd push back his bedtime or wake him earlier.

Both my kids sleep 9-10 hours at night.

The younger one (2.5) needs 2 more hours at 1:00 (after lunch).

The older one (4), rarely takes naps.

yes dd naps around 12:30-1.

I would try 12.

I think it's this. I had the same problem around 17m and after several weeks, DS was back to normal.

I hope it's just a phase! I don't mind a later nap but the few times I've tried it didn't work. I started trying to put him down at 1030 the past few days and when he didn't go to sleep I'd bring him downstairs, let him play, eat, etc then try again an hour later, repeating the nap routine but he'd just stay up. We tried again at 12, 1, 2, he just wasn't having it.

I'm not giving up, I will just start trying to get him to nap later in the day. Up until very recently he was doing great with a nap at 10, sometimes earlier. I'll say though, he's really not cranky for being up all day!

I would blame today on sleeping in the car for a few minutes. DD has always been that way that if she sleeps for even 5 minutes in the car she won't nap again at all. I would try a little later like others suggested and definitely don't give up!

An 18m child should have given up the morning nap a long time ago... Ive read so many sleep books lately (unfortunately lol)and at this point they should be down to 1 nap at around 12-1pm. An 18m old still needs a nap... Even 2 yr olds do although they may fight it more for various reasons... 3 is really when a lot of kids call it quits

He may be getting frustrated that you keep putting in the crib at these times. I would look for the sleepy signals & put him in same time EVERYDAY & let him stay there. My boys wake up at 6:30-7 nap at 12ish & bed by 8pm. They are 2 1/2. This has been there schedule since they gave up there early nap at 15 months.

Re: Giving up naps at 18mo?

My 19 month old will sometimes take a morning nap and an afternoon nap, but most often she takes a nap around 12:30 after lunch. The 10:30 time may just be too early.

My dd started fighting naps around that age too, and I eventually figured out that she just didn't need such an early nap anymore. She also used to nap around 10:30, but now it's more like 12 or 1 and sometimes even later. As they get older they can go longer stretches without sleeping. So while she used to nap about 4 hours after waking, now on most days she goes about 6 hours. I wait until she shows signs of being tired and then I follow the same nap time routine (snack and milk, diaper change, white noise, rocking) everyday so she knows what to expect and starts to get more sleepy.

Sounds like the nap may be too early.
DS transitioned at about 18 months to one nap. (Daycare had a big part in this!). He goes down at about 12:45-1:00 and typically sleeps anywhere from 2-3 hours. We keep this schedule on weekends as much as we can as well. He goes to bed between 8:30 and 9:00.

He's not giving up naps. His needs and therefore his schedule is just changing and you need to adjust to it! (which will take a little time)

My suggestion is to put him in for a nap after lunch everyday. So that should be about 12:30 or 1. Take him out in the mornings, play, etc, then lunch, then nap. That should work! Good luck! Chat Icon

ETA: My 21 month old has been following this same general schedule since she was about 15 mos. Her bedtime used to be 6:30/7 but changed to more like 7:30 in the last few mos (I will say daylight savings influenced that).

Wake up: 6:30/7
Nap: 1:30 (ish) for 2-3 hours
Bedtime: 7:30 (ish)

This was his one nap a day, he hasn't taken two naps in a day since before he turned 1. I will try for after lunch.

For those who go out in the morning before lunch, how do you keep them from falling asleep in the car? Both of my kids will fall asleep in the car but neither stays asleep once you take them out of the car seat.

Yes, sorry. Must've read your post too quickly... Def try lunch and then nap afterwards.

My dd will not fall asleep in car during morn hours... She's just not that tired... And she even wakes up at 6-7. The older they get, they longer they can stay awake. I would give them toys to play with back there to keep them occupied. Keep conversation going with them etc
