Moms of 9 month olds - solid solids?

What solid solids is your 9 month old eating? DS is still mostly on purees but I try to incorporate solid foods into every meal.

So far he has had puffs, cheerios, bread, cheese, yogurt (does that count?), chicken, pastina, zucchini, hard boiled egg yolks. I have tried banana, peaches, and mango and for some reason he won't eat fruit in solid form. He loves fruit puree and loves to suck on fruit through his mesh feeder but he doesn't like to pick it up.

What else is your 9 month old eating? He loves to feed himself so I'm trying to add more foods regularly. He is cutting his FIRST tooth now, so he still mostly gums stuff. I try to keep his foods solid or disolvable for that reason.

Pancakes, French toast, grilled cheese, mac n cheese, elbow or small shell pasta, steamed sweet potato. They can still mash stuff with their gums.

Yeah, we've done grilled cheese. I'll try larger pasta. Sweet potato is a good one. I'm nervous about pancakes because we haven't done egg whites yet...

Moms of 9 month olds - solid solids?

My niece is almost 11 months, but when she was 9 months she was eating whatever everyone else was eating; she no longer ate puréed by that point.

ETA: he'll be gumming food for a while. The first teeth that come in are not really used to break down food smaller. They are for biting into things.

Sounds like you are doing great. We've only done puffs, cheerios and cut up pieces of string cheese. I'm trying to work more stuff in, but I keep forgetting!

My DS loves avocado!

Turkey meatballs from Trader Joes are a big favorite, we just break them into tiny pieces.

In addition to the cheese, yogurt, fruit (my DS is obsessed with banana), cheerios, pasta

children under 1 should get most, or can get all, of their calories from breastmilk or formula. providing solids before 1 isn't for nutrition so much as practice. at 8m your LO could probably start with a baby-led weaning type of solids introduction if you're up for the mess and want to start solids. or you can wait until a year. from your avatar it looks like you're on #3 so i'm sure you know the drill by now Chat Icon

what about steamed broccoli, carrot sticks or green beans? easy to hold and easy to mash between gums. or beans like garbanzos or black beans if he's got his pincer grasp working for him. google baby-led weaning for ideas. that method is all about giving baby whole foods.

Thanks for the ideas!

I can't do any beans or legumes - he has been identified as having an allergy. It also means I'm really diligent with everything, even though he hasn't yet reacted to anything else.

I think more steamed veggies is a good idea, like broccoli and carrots. Sweet potato, too. I'm going to get some meatballs also, and I may try pancakes soon and just make them with egg yolk only.

Fruit is slimy so it's hard to pick up.
We also gave cheese early on. Mozzarella and feta.

My 8 1/2 month old is only on stage 2 foods, no solids yet. We didn't start any food until 6 months so I see no need to rush it. I think my older dd started solids around 10 months so I'm not stressing it.

there is no rule. We did very few purees starting at 6m and went to solids only at about 9 months. she lost interest in purees. that being said the solids should not replace breast milk/formula until 1

We also started purees at 6 months - before that he was EBF, and still gets the majority of his nourishment from breast milk. We've only started finger foods in the last few weeks because he was showing interest in feeding himself. Tonight, for the first time, he refused purees outright and only wanted food he could feed himself.
