The day after he was born. He just spits them out though. Doesn't like them, never did.

Ds was given one in the hospital bc they had to take him to cardiology for testing and needed to keep him calm
At 8 weeks he takes it occasionally
I'm actually waiting for him to find his thumb

my DS took to it right away. he used it to sooth himself. when he was dropping it in the crib and not able to put it back himself i weaned him off, and never gave it back. he is fine.

since birth! I am all about pacifiers and completely against thumb sucking. I will do anything to try to have my DC not suck their thumb and the pacifier worked for both of them

At about a week? Maybe 10 days old. It was a lifesaver for me because DS wanted to be latched 24/7, and my nipples were raw and bleeding. It gave me time for my nipples to heal so we could keep BFing.
At 9 months he uses it mostly for sleeping and car rides, and if we're out and he's fussy and nothing else will work. He spits it out once he feels calm/doesn't need it anymore.
I will say, it was a huge hassle until he was able to put it in himself. We actually took it away for sleep for a while because we kept having to pop it in. Now that he does it himself it's great!

My last DC was in (NICU) for a couple of days and he got it there when they brought him up he didn't have one and I asked for it and they told me they didn't have them on the maternity floor. I basically told them I want it back and they called down to NICU to get me one. So I don't know how easy it will be to get one. This was at Winthrop

Bring your own. Most hospitals wont give them because of the pro breastfeeding movement going on

which pisses me off!!! it such bull ... i fed formula and pumped at the hospital they would only give me one bottle of formula at a time i had to keep calling a nurse every time i needed one

The one bottle at a time thing is probably not about breastfeeding, but about keeping control of supplies. Some people bring an empty bag with them to take stuff from the hospital. I'm sure that was annoying though because the medical assistants took forever to come when I called (they wanted to measure blood sugar before the first 4 feedings) and I would be sitting there waiting to BF. Sometimes the nurses station didn't even tell someone to come and my baby was waiting to eat!

since day one and now at age three its like torture to get it away we went from a vase full through the house to her holding on to her very last two one in the house and one in the car :(

Pacifiers??
The day we got home from the hospital. At first, I was scared of nipple confusion since he was/is EBF, but I needed a break. It came in very handy at 2 am and he was clusterfeeding and I needed to pee!
ETA: now at 12 weeks, he rarely takes one, but he does suck his thumb in his sleep.

Winthrop didn't provide them, I brought my own. My pediatrician told the nurses that he said it was OK.

We gave it to her just before 1 month... my ped told me to wait until a month.... but she had SUCH a strong need to suck... and I wasn't able to BF (horrible mastitis at 1 week pp... bad latch... it was the most horrible experience of my life!... so she gets a bottle and I pump (a measly 4 oz a day  )
Now she is 3 months (today in fact!) and she LOVES the paci... we try to not let her use it at night because then we play the "Spit it out and scream" game... but it definitely calms her down.

A few hours after they were born! My girls loved their binkys and they were life savers! Much easier to take away than thumb sucking. I brought my own to the hospital but the hospital supplied nuks.

In the hospital. I avoided it at first because I was BF'ing and was told about nipple confusion. After 24 hrs of straight crying I asked my Ped & he said it was ok. DS took to both with no problems.
The hospital supplied the pacifier - the soothie & that's what he stuck with until he was weaned.

I agree this is probably what they do, although I don't know of ANY babies that had the nipple confusion they repeatedly cram down your throat. Babies need to suck and mom's nipples need a rest.
Hospital provided a soothie to me. It is the safest b/c its all one piece and won't break apart.

I gave DD one on day 2 in the hospital. I originally wanted to avoid them because I was afraid of nipple confusion but I brought Soothies with me just in case (Stony Brook does not provide them anymore). The nurse said my nipples needed a break and DD would be ok using a paci and BF'ing. She is 7 weeks now and still no nipple confusion. It'll calm her for a little bit but if she doesn't want it, she'll just spit it out. I try not to use it that much--I don't want her to become too attached to it.
