Can I register my child in school once I sign a contract on a new home?
We are currently househunting. We hope to find a new home and have a contract signed before the school year starts.
Would I be able to sign my daughter up for school, once the contract is signed on the new house? Because, we wouldn't be closing untill most likely the school year already starts like mid September?
Anyone deal with this or know?
Thansk :)

Yes you should be able to register with the contract.

Call the admin offices in your district and ask.
When I registered my DD last year we had to bring a copy of our tax bill, proof of our home address, etc.
They *may* make you wait until the house is technically yours, I'm not sure how it works in cases like this. Your best bet is asking them directly, they will be able to advise you best.

Our school district is very strict. A contract definitely wouldn't cut it. In fact, they didn't let us register our DD until after we were living in the house (doing renovations) even though we had already closed on it and were the owners! Crazy, right?

Our district would not - I know people who did complete renovations on house and lived elsewhere and they couldn't register for the school even though they owned the house/

My school district allowed it with a signed contract. I had 30 days after the estimated closing date on the contract to show them the new deed from vlosing or a letter from our lawyer saying why closing was delayed and a new estimated closing date. After closing I had 30 days to show them a utility bill with our name on it.

Id call and ask.
In my mind.... I never had to show my deed to prove we were in the district. We had an electric bill and I think a mortgage bill from the bank with the house address on it. But never the deed. They didn't care how long I lived there, just that I prove that I did.
Best of luck!

my gf was displaced from sandy and she had to get an apt in her district in order to send her dc to school. even though they owned the house, since they weren't living in it they wouldn't let the child go. i think it is district by district.

That situation should have qualified your friend as homeless and she should have been able to remain in district.

WOW, that's terrible!!! All the students in my district who were displaced stayed and even received bussing. I'm shocked.

That depends on the District. Legally a District does not have to let anyone attend the school until they are actually live in the house. Owning a home (or being in contract) is not necessarily enough. Each district has a policy on this. Some schools will allow the child to start if the contract provides that the closing will take place on or about a month from the start of school.
