Pumping questions

I'm 6 days pp.
my son is in NICU, born at 31weeks 6 days.
I am pumping. It at least trying to.
I'm getting very little. And my right side is even less.
My question for now ( as I have many)
Is should my breasts feel soft or hard?
They were hard the few few days from engorgement.
That has passed. But now I feel soft and almost normal.
I am pumping every three hours.
Am I pumping failure?

You are not a pumping failure!!!

In the beginning, you will probably not be able pump a lot of milk - I know I was not able to when I first tried. Remember that the baby's stomach is very small at that point so they can not intake that much yet. Even now, my left side is a big underperformer.

If you are pumping every 3 hours, your breasts will not feel hard. The only times mine have felt hard were when my milk first came in and when DS STTN.

Did you get a hospital grade pump?
Do you switch the phases for your pump? If I see no milk coming out, I change the phase in hopes of getting a second letdown. I also massage my breasts while pumping trying to squeeze out any leftover milk,

I never ever have hard breasts or pain from engorgement and I'm 19wpp and exclusively pump. I do have low supply though. I believe I have low supply bc I wasn't diligent enough in the beginning to do it every 3 hours. Keep it going no matter. Be consistent and do not skip pumps as much as you want to. Even when I was barely making an ounce per pumping session, I kept going. I'm now up to 2.5-7oz per session.

Producing less on one side is totally normal. My left side makes more than double what my right makes.
