Breaking the nursing to sleep habit without CIO
DD is 6 months and I'm really trying to stop nursing to sleep for naps and bedtime. We got into the habit because she has always been really tough to put down and I have a 3 year old, so I really can't spend 30 minutes trying to get her to nap. But it's gotten really, really hard for anyone but me to get her to sleep, so I need to break the association. I read a parents.com article that suggested just rocking her to sleep for one week to break the associate and then work on putting in her crib awake. So that's what I'm doing, but now she cries a lot at nap time and it takes a while. I'm not ready for CIO at this point, so I hold her and rock while she cries and falls asleep. I hate that nap time has become upsetting to her. Bedtime is a little easier for some reason. Do you think it will get easier after a few days?

For bedtime I would start having dh do it bc if she smells you she's going to want to nurse.

Bedtime actually hasn't been too much of an issue. I still feed her before bed but I do it early in process and then read her a book and sing/rock. This is what i always did with DD1, too. It's really nap times that are really hard.

Thanks for suggestion. I try but she just chews on them and spits them out. She wasn't a fan, even as a NB.

Naps were really hard with my DS2 (I do EBF but I didn't nurse him to sleep). I have a 4yo also so at 5 months old, I let DS2 CIO for naps. It was relatively easy. The most he ever cried was 17 minutes. I did it for his naps one day (at that time his naps were only 30 minutes and I'd have to rock him for 15 to get him to fall asleep). It only took that one afternoon for him to learn to fall asleep on his own and it was the BEST thing I did. I never had to CIO with DS1, he was always just a great sleeper. He's 10 months now and puts himself to sleep no problem and now naps at least 3 hrs a day.
Not what you wanted to hear but thought I would share. DH thought it was horrible so I did it when he wasn't home. I did it bc of my DS1, it just wasn't fair to him that I was leaving him alone downstair so long while rocking DS2 to sleep for every nap. Now CIO for nighttime sleep, that I haven't been able to do. He's still up 1-2 times per night.

Thanks. I think we're going to have to do it too. I can get her to go out with rocking but it's taking about 20 minutes. Right now, she is lightly fussing in her crib and I'm trying to let her work it out.
