Exactly this, there are a few ways to go and they lead through different towns. Syracuse is a good place to stop, Rochester as well, Buffalo is an option but there isn't a whole lot to do there... And then of course there are college towns like Cortland.

Will probably go thru syracuse. I am looking for kid friendly things as I have toddler twin boys. I am not really interested in stopping at colleges. Thanks for the idea though.

Chat Icon I didn't mean to stop AT the college! It's just that college towns often have really cute main street-type areas to walk around Chat Icon

Syracuse is a good place to stop, it's also about halfway between LI and Niagara Falls so you could stay overnight.

I was going to suggest the same thing.... also, and this might sound super silly, but we love the Wegman's in 'cuse. There's also the NYS fairgrounds there... Great NYS Fair
