NEW QUESTION ADDED FOR EI FOLKS -- Having tough time -- need some input

Ds turned 9 months about 2 weeks ago. When i went to doc for his well visit i left upset. First doc was concerned that he is not crawling. Ive been concerned too but knew this was going to be a struggle bc he hates being on his stomach. Whenever we do tummy time he just rolls himself over. Doc told me to call early intervention right away which i did (waiting for eval). Then i told her i just started giving puffs cheerios and some other foods like eggs pancakes etc. i told her that ds is still working on picking up his food with pincher and can do big things like crackers but has trouble with small pieces like cheerios. She told me to no longer feed him and just leave the food on tray and walk away. I left her office feeling like i did a bad job and havent done enough to get him eating and moving. She kept saying she was sure nothing was wrong and he is just being lazy but it made me worry.
I guess im just venting - but im hoping someone might have been in my spot and can offer some advice!
I feel like ds is doing so well in all other areas and that joy all went out the window with this appt!
Thanks!!

NEW QUESTION-- I just had my eval done yesterday. They said I should have the results in a few days. They said he would qualify if he ranks 33% in one area or 25% in two areas. Is the higher the number the better he is... or vice versa? Im assuming the lower the number the worse off.

Try not to worry too much. Crawling is not even a milestone and lack of crawling alone is not enough to qualify for physical therapy at this point. I think your ped jumped the gun, and I say this as a mother of child with cerebral palsy who had a ton of delays. Nothing that you described above sounds too concerning. One of my other kids (not the one with cp) didn't have a pincer till 9 months and he is now a totally typical two year old. I know from experience though, that once someone sounds the alarm, you will not be comfortable till a professional has allayed your fears so I say go ahead with the eval. Hopefully there is nothing to worry about but if there is, I have seen first hand the difference early intervention makes. Good luck.

My older DD didn't crawl till 10 mos (and didn't walk till 15 mos) and she's a great athlete now at 7, so take that for whatever it's worth. Chat Icon

My DS never crawled. He went right to walking before 10 months. He learned to crawl after learning to walk.
He also didn't pick up food on his own till close to 12 months, even though his pincher grip was very good. He had zero interest.
You're not a bad mum and if he needs EI better to get it now than wait, IF he needs it. All babies develops at their own rate. Chat Icon

Your ped sounds like an idiot.

Don't stress about the crawling. My DD NEVER, EVER crawled. She started walking with help at 12 months and was walking independently at 15 months. I never even thought about getting her services or having her evaluated. Babies develop at their own pace, I saw no reason to stress about it.

She's 5 now and perfectly healthy, active, and on track (if not ahead) with everything.

Don't stress, I'm sure your LO is fine. Chat Icon

Re: Having tough time -- need some input

Sounds like you are doing the right thing by checking in on crawling. Likely there's nothing wrong, but a check-in doesn't hurt. DD will be 19 mos. and is still not walking. But this is no reflection on you by any means!!! Babies move at their own pace.

As for the eating, dd had great fine motor skills but did not feed herself til almost 11 mos. maybe she was lazy, who knows? I did not believe in leaving feeding up to her though - she hated to eat and would probably starve if I didn't push the issue. Do what YOU feel comfortable with. Maybe it's leaving food on his tray for a few minutes then feed him some.

Sounds like your child is thriving and happy, and that's all that matters! Take your peds suggestions merely as suggestions. YOU are the parent!

My DD never crawled. She too hated tummy time and would scream anytime we put her down. She eventually started scooting around on her tush. She started walking around 16 months. She is now 6 and is perfectly healthy.

Don't feel bad, babies do things in their own time and unless you're a PT or OT it's impossible to know what to do and if there's anything holding them back. The eval should happen pretty quickly so just wait and see what they say. Either way, you'll probably feel better to talk to the pros and hear what they have to say about his progress and get advice about how to help him. I do think 9 months is young to worry about crawling and pincer grasp (especially if you just started giving him finger foods). However, as a mom who waited until 13 months to ask for an eval, I regret waiting so long. It can't hurt to jump the gun in this case. In the mean time, I'd keep feeding him some foods and let him do finger foods himself. With crawling, just put him down on his belly constantly and if he immediately turns over that's now big deal. It's still making him move! My ped said as long as they find some way of moving around by 12 months then they're okay.

I wouldn't stress about the crawling.

I agree with letting them eat on their own. I always held DS bottle. He was almost a year and wouldn't hold it. Dr said he could but why would he when I was doing it for him. He was right. Sometime we need to let the figure it out on their own

Your ped sounds like an idiot.

Seriously!!

I'd still feed him but leave foods or him to pick up too. He will get it. Or offer puffs alone as a snack.

At a year they thought DD had a pincer grasp issues. They suggested peg puzzles and the pull apart bead toys to strengthen the hands. These toys

And I know some 12 mo olds who don't crawl yet. Every baby does it on their own time. It's nothing you did or didn't do right or wrong. Chat Icon

Every kid is different and develops at their own pace. I don't think 9 months is all that late.

First id like to thank you all for letting me vent in a moment where nothing i was doing seemed to be right. All of your responses were very helpful and have given me lots to consider. It helps to get insight from btdt moms and ppl who have peds with differing views.
Thank you to this poster who linked me to these puzzles. I will buy them. Cant hurt!!

Re: Having tough time -- need some input

My DS is almost 11 months & has never crawled yet (I don't think he ever will) and he hasn't fed himself yet (it's like if the food is in my own hand he'll open his mouth for it, but if I hand it to him or leave it on the tray he just plays with it). I'm not overly concerned yet.

I wouldn't worry yet honestly. I think your ped is really jumping the gun here and causing you unnecessary worry. My dc didn't crawl until 11/12 months, had no interest before then. I'm not too sure about the pincer grasp. Just keep offering things like puffs and he'll pick it up soon.

i agree with the others that your ped shouldn't be making you worry and feel bad! my DS is late with everything. i worry about it but i also know he will do everything in his own time. he has had a few medical setbacks so i try to bear that in mind but at 4 months he couldn't even hold his head up yet. we got him in EI and at 9 months he wasn't crawling. he just sat and played. then literally one day, he just went on all fours and crawled. kids all do things in their own time. he eats just fine but he doesn't have a good pincer grasp so we may get him some OT...i'm not too worried yet. i'm sure your DS will do everything in his own time too. getting him the EI evaluation doesn't hurt and if you qualify for services that's awesome....the way i look at it is a little bit of help is always beneficial. if you ever want to talk, please feel free to FM me!

NEW QUESTION ADDED FOR EI FOLKS -- Having tough time -- need some input

Did they give you any feedback where he was? Every time we have had an eval done they have told us that he would/would not qualify. We had deficiencies in multiple areas so we qualified.

I wouldn't worry about the crawling too much though. I had DS evaluated at 11 months because he was not sitting at all. The day the evaluators showed up, he decided would be the day that he sat. Every kid moves at their own pace.

A 33 percent delay is worse than a 25 percent delay. So he would either need a 33 percent delay in one area or a 25 percent delay in two areas to qualify.

That you guys -- i figured that is what it was. They just said 33 and 25% and never said "delay"... so i had no idea which way the scale worked!

I asked "when would I hear" and she said that she had to go back to her office to do the paperwork and that i should hear in 2 days. Then she said that she had concerns that he wasnt wanting to move from his sitting position and he was too happy just staying put. I asked her for ideas of what i could do with him to help him move and she said to just keep putting him on his stomach (duh!). No other feedback was given. Made me think he would qualify but who knows. If he doesnt I will probably just hire my own PT.

I spent a lot of time on the floor with DS. I kept him in a sitting position supported by my legs and we played. As he got older and he was not walking yet, we got a lot of toys that encouraged pulling himself up and supported him. He cruised forever but did not walk on his own until he was almost 1 1/2. But I found that putting things just out of his reach would encourage him to move to get them. Back then, if he was awake, we were on the floor practicing sitting, crawling, walking, standing, etc. He is almost 3 now and he is extremely active and nothing stops him from getting what he wants.

Re: NEW QUESTION ADDED FOR EI FOLKS -- Having tough time -- need some input

My ds is almost 10 months and not crawling - he was 8 months before he could sit up. He despises being on his tummy. Now this week he is almost getting into a crawl position from the sitted position. My older 2 never crawled they only but scooted. They were both late walkers

What you should do is try sitting on the floor with him and put something he is playing with and interested in a little further away and see if he reaches for it. then keep moving it a little further and see what he does.

Don't stress all babies develop at a different pace.

Thank you for your reply
This is exactly what we've been doing. He will lunge for it as far as he possibly can, but if he cant reach it he will ultimately give up and not try to scoot or crawl. Sometimes he reaches so far he falls over (i let him fall) and then he rolls over to his back. He cannot get into a seated position from flat on his back on his own. This also concerns me.

My guy does not attempt to get in a sitted position either- but we blame the weight of his head :) See what EI says and don't stress he is happy and healthy. As I said all kids don't develop the same and I think we all want to put every kid on the same timetable

Re: NEW QUESTION ADDED FOR EI FOLKS -- Having tough time -- need some input

I never crawled. Neither did my brother or sister. We all just got up and walked at like 11 months.

My mom told me my cousin was walking at ten months and never crawled either.

My son only just started to really crawl RIGHT shy of his ten month birthday.
