When did you stop using white noise for sleep?

I have a fan going in DS (14m) and DD's (3.5 years) rooms for naps and bedtime. It has a loud enough hum going to not hear noises around the house while they sleep, and they are both fantastic nappers and sleepers.

I'm starting to think I'm creating a bad habit? I used to think it was something easy to replicate anywhere (bring white noise machines to grandparents houses, on vacations, etc.) but now I'm thinking long-term... for example, what if DD goes to a sleepover party one day and can't sleep because there is no white noise?

FWIW - DH and I also sleep with a fan going in our room to block out outside noises and we sleep much better with it on.

Am I over-thinking this? Or doing a disservice to my kids creating a white noise addiction?

I think you're over thinking it. I didn't have white noise when I was young but one summer when I was about 13/14, I had a fan in my room and realized it was the first time in my life that I actually STTN. I've been using white noise ever since. It definitely wasn't a habit started by my folks.

Growing up my mom always used the marpac white noise machine. I never slept well growing up and eventually I got one I think in college. I've used one ever since and DH loves it now too. We have one for DD and bring it whenever we travel. Even if there are times you're without it and don't sleep great, you're still getting the benefit the vast majority of the time so I say it's worth it. I remember my dad traveling on business once and he slept on the floor next to the ac bc he needed the noise which was funny bc my mom needs it bc he snores and is so loud! DH and I do have a small travel alarm clock that has white noise so we travel with that if we're not bringing the marpac. I don't think it's a terrible habit to start and if your kids are great sleepers than I would not hesitate to continue with it!

My husband and I still use one for ourselves every night. We're addicted!

So unclear about DD. Sometimes she uses it, sometimes not.

We bogart the noise of DS sound machine through the monitor! I have no plans to get rid of it anytime soon LOL

Dd is a great sleeper and I never used one- white noise drives me nuts--I also need for her to be flexible with sleeping bc she will
eventually be in full time day care and will need to nap.

My 16 month old still uses a white noise machine at night, my 3 yr old stopped a few months ago.

We play music for my 3.5 year old DS every night at home. However, whenever we are on vacation or he sleeps at my parents house, he doesn't have the music and he sleeps just fine.

My DD is almost 6 and she still likes her noise machine on sometimes, she likes the crashing waves. She doesn't NEED it, if we don't put it on she sleeps fine, but she likes hearing it sometimes as she falls asleep.

I use the sound machine for my DS too, he's 15 months. I don't know that he even notices it's on and if we forget to turn it on at night he still sleeps fine.

I wouldn't sweat it.

You're overthinking it. DS slept with white noise until last summer, when he was around 7 months old. At that point we had the a/c running all night in his room. Once fall came, we never went back to white noise and he still sttn either way. I was never convinced the white noise did much for him anyway.

I wouldn't give it a second thought. I still sleep with white noise every night!

I agree with the pp's, I think you're overthinking it. My dc both have both slept with white noise. Some nights we forget to turn it on and they still sleep just fine. We visit my parents often and stay with them. We have never brought the white noise with us and they still sleep fine. I don't think I would make an effort to get rid of the white noise.

We used one every single night up until about 3 when the machine broke and figured it was time to get rid of it. It did not effect his sleep at all, I think it was more mental thing for us - lol

we've always used the sound machine for sleep but not nap time for that reason. with my oldest we stopped using it when he was about 2 1/2 and he was fine!!

I think you're overthinking it, too. there are a lot of adults who like to have a fan or other white noise to help them sleep- its not a horrible habit to have.
DS is 3.5 and sleeps with a fan on for the noise. the way our house is set up, we almost have to have it- his room is right off of our living room, and DH and I got tired of having the TV practically on mute, and tip toeing around after 8 at night HAHA so the fan helps with that.
so I say- just go with it, whatever helps them sleep the best!

I actually love the RAIN sound which is similar to white noise but yeah don't worry about it! My father is in his 60's and still prefers the white noise! LOL!
