more playdoh questions

So, finally let the boys play with playdoh. Mostly outside till it rained.

Of course in the time they played all the colors were mixed up. Do you guys just keep buying more if they do that or just work with the mishmash of colors that they made?

I am not a fan of playdoh, but they have been begging for it and when DS2 just turned 3 this week that's all he asked for so of course my mom finally bought it for them.
They have that tooth one and cupcakes.

Re: more playdoh questions

I use a ton of playdoh at work and my DD uses it every day at home (only at her play table). I make my own and don't allow mixing colors.

1 Cup White Flour
1/2 Cup Salt
2 Tablespoons Cream of Tartar (order cheap fom Amazon)
1 Tablespoon Oil
1 Cup Water
Food Coloring

Mix first 4 ingredients in a pan. Add water and food coloring and mix well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for 3-5 minutes. Dough will become difficult to stir and form a "clump". Remove from stove and knead for 5 minutes. Store in plastic container or ziplock bag.

I've also added essential oils during the kneading process.
One batch is a ton of playdoh for 2 kids.

I finally gave in as well, took about 3 years lol, and it gets mixed up. I let her play with mixed up. No sense in throwing it out until its dry. I do stress to her to not mix them, but in those toys they do get mixed. Par for the course. It does dry out fast if not closed properly so I stress that too. Shes 4 now and is really good about it. She loves it. It does get crumbly so I just sweep up what falls to the floor. I bought the huge pack of them and that lasted a very long time. She got another big pack for her bday. I do only let her play with it at her table on the tile floor.

Re: more playdoh questions

My DS loves playdoh...what kid doesn't really.

I let him mix the colors up. I refuse to worry about something like mixing playdoh colors...its part of growing up. What kid do you know manages to keep all the playdoh colors separate unless they are only playing with one color at a time.

I just condense the containers down each time he uses them until we are down to a few. Than I buy more.

I just let DS mix the colors. But I don't let him open more than 2 cans at a time.

We try and keep him at his play table but it doesn't always work. I just vacuum up all the crumbs when he is done.

I don't really care if they mix the colors. It is part of the fun. I give them the small tubs, and don't give them all the colors at once. I buy more when we need it.

Re: more playdoh questions

We usually only have a 2 day use for each round of play doh.

1st day - play doh used properly with colors separated

2nd day - all mixed up

3rd day - throw out

play with it mixed up until it gets dried out - then new playdoh.

I'm not a fan of playdoh either. I didn't' even like it as a kid.

We let him mix up the colors and we always put it back in whatever can the majority of the color is. LOL He loves his playdoh! He must have about 50 different cut outs and things that I store in a playdoh bucket and I bought an under bed storage thing to store all the cans of playdoh. As they dry out I toss, and will buy him more when he needs it.

This! My DD loves playdoh, as did I as a child (and still do!) she's been playing with it for over a year now (she's 3). We have a ton, and throw out/replace as it dries out. We practice colors, shapes, make different letters/numbers with it, practice cutting with playdoh scissors. I think it's great. I encourage her to NOT mix the colors, but it happens and then we get a new color..lol.

I let them mix the colors, thats all part of the fun. I dont have "rules" when it comes to play. Want to smash all the colors together and it makes you happy, knock yourself out.

They play with it like that for a while and eventually we get new playdoh.

I give a few tubs at a time and like the PP said, eventually you lose some, some gets hard, and I keep condensing them as well until its time for more.
