Food allergies

Has anyone switched to formula from EBF to aid in managing food allergies? My pediatrician is very supportive but put the idea out there as an alternative. He recommended elecare if I decide to try FF--reading the ingredients has me really upset--the first two ingredients are corn syrup solids and soy oil--these are things I avoid in my own diet--are there alternatives that do not contain corn syrup? Neocate also has corn syrup.
I have an appointment with an allergist tomorrow-we will see what his feelings are about testing and EBF.

Re: Food allergies

I know plenty of moms who EBF who had babies with allergies... I unfortunately couldn't and Elecare was the only formula that my son could drink... It basically saved his life... Milk and soy protein allergy. I am not sure if there are any other elemental formula's without those ingredients..

DD definitely has a soy allergy and we suspect eggs and raw fish also cause a less severe reaction. I eliminated eggs, fish, corn, wheat(I am gluten intolerant), soy, nuts and milk for two weeks. I added back a small amount of milk the past few days. I think I can keep up the elimination diet for a few more months--I just want an alternative in case I cannot figure out what is making her sick. She is happy and gaining weight but definitely reacting to something.

Just wanted to add that it can take a while for the food proteins to leave your system. I remember with my dd it took a month or two after elimination to see a difference.

I'm not aware of a formula without some form of milk, soy, corn, etc. Looks like you eliminated most of the popular allergens. The only additional food group you may want to try eliminating are nightshades (if seeing no results). Good luck!

Re: Food allergies

With my middle DD I stopped bfing at 8 weeks and put her on Neocate. I couldn't keep up with the elimination diet. I could never eat outside my house, because their was dairy or soy hidden in everything and my DD was tortured by it. She was a different baby...her severe eczema cleared, she stopped projectile vomiting and she was content. She stayed on it until 16 months.

Re: Food allergies

My DD (and now DS) didn't have as many intolerances but I had to cut ALL dairy (even hidden casein, lactose, etc) from my diet. All soy except Soybean oil or Soy Lecithin which doesn't contain the soy protein. With my DD I wasn't able to introduce soy until 10 months, and she maintained her dairy allergy until 15 months at which point she outgrew it. I EBF her and at 1 we gave coconut milk until she could have cows milk. I was also still BFing.

Elimination diets stink, but are very doable once you figure out your go to meals and snacks. I'm 4 months into my dairy/soy elimination diet with my DS.

ETa: I saw you're going to an allergist! That's great!! I brought DD to an allergist when she 1 and still reacting to milk. He will be able to tell you better what to avoid and for how long etc. I was still BFing my DD at 1 and my allergist was very supportive, told me to keep BFing and to have dairy in my own diet at that point to help her system get used to it in small amounts! She outgrew her intolerance by 15 months.

How old is your LO? I know around 6 months their digestive tracts mature and you may no have to eliminate so many things.

Also, if she's happy and gaining, those are the biggest things! What type of reaction is she having? bF babies diapers always change appearance. My DS has yellow, mustardy, green, sometimes watery, sometimes slimy, sometimes seedy. I was told it's all normal unless I see bright red blood or chunks of mucous.

Food allergies

We saw the allergist today and he was really knowledgeable and very nice. He wants me to eliminate ALL cow produced foods- apparently many children react not only to milk but to the beef as well. I can start adding back all the other foods I eliminated one at a time- I have to add a food then wait a week before adding another- if she reacts I stop the newest added food. I think this is manageable.
Dd is four months old and the allergist feels we can do a few skin tests in three weeks. He is really understanding of my resistance to switch to my options for FF so that is a huge plus.
DD gets bloody diarrhea with chunks of mucus in it so it is easy to determine when she reacts to a food. I feel a lot better now that I have a plan and medical support.

MrsDamonSalv7319 what are your go to snacks? I am pretty good with lunch and dinner but I struggle with snacks-.

Re: Food allergies

If you need to start giving formula, check out Baby's Only

I've heard great things about it.

I'm not gluten free, so idk much about those options but:

Pretzels-my favorite snack anyway
Carrots or peppers in hummus
Fruit
Be Kind bars-double check ingredients, but most are dairy/soy free
Oreos (they are dairy free)- for when I really need chocolate fix
Earth's Balance has a line of Vegan snacks including "white cheddar" popcorn. & cheddar puffs-all dairy free.
So Delicious coconut milk based yogurt & ice cream (for a treat).
Plain baked lays (the flavors have milk)

I love the So Delicious coconut milk & the Blue Diamond Chocolate Almond milk.

My nighttime snack is usually a bowl of Cheerios w/ the chocolate almond milk.

I'm glad the allergist was helpful. Good luck & hope your LO feels better soon!!! Let me know if you have any other questions!!

ETA: you can google for a list of hidden dairy ingredients. Casein, whey protein, etc. Milk is disguised in so many processed foods.
