Moms of reflux babies- help!

Please tell me it gets better! I had twins in match at 28w. My dd has severe reflux. She was on Zantac twice a day and on Allimentum bc I felt like formula was also bothering her. It all started on Father's Day where she threw up and choked and turned blue. Scariest moment of my life. Since then she would throw up projectile like once every 3 days but the last 4 days she threw up every day. We went to gastro yesterday and she has milk allergy so they put her on elecare and added Prevacid to the mix. She ha another bad choking episode last night and tonight. Does this ever get better?!?!? I have an older ds and the other twin who only jut came home from nicu. I am a nervous wreck

The elecare is very thin and makes the reflux worse. Talk to your ped or gi about adding a little cereal to the bottles. Also DD had to wind up on prilosec to get the reflux under control. So sorry you are dealing with all this

I put rice in her bottles. I so feel like nothing is working. Between the early labor and long long nicu stay I am so emotionally spent. This is making me even more of emotional mess!

It does get better. My DS had severe reflux and milk allergy. We went to GI and he'd spit up the oatmeal we put in his bottles. Just takes time. Things got somewhat better after 12 weeks but he continued with reflux through 6-10 months (although much less). Once he started solids the food held down the spit up. Sorry you are going through this. It will pass.

Re: Moms of reflux babies- help!

hang in there. I am in the same boat as you with my twins. They are 11 weeks now and were born at 37 weeks, 3 days. Both are on Elecare after we tried regular Enfamil, Enfamil AR and Nutramigen. The Elecare is helping the bloody stools and one twin's severe eczema, but not so much with his reflex. He is also on Axid. It comes and goes. He is much better than he was. There are some feedings where he is fine and then others where he is spitting up everywhere and extremely fussy for about 30 minutes afterwards. I don't see a huge change with the medication--- it helps a little, but defintiely not a "cure."

ETA: I do find he fusses less if I put rice cereal in the bottle. If you use rice, get Earth's Best or Beech Nut.... Gerber cereals have soy in them.

It sucks. Chat Icon I couldn't wait for DD to start solids so she would eat. There were days where she only took like 12-16 oz of formula all day. Def ask about Prilosec it was a huge help once we switched over. It has to be compounded and only certain pharmacies make it but I would have gone to the moon if need be...anything to make it better.

Hang in there, it gets better! DS had totally grown out of his reflux around 7 or 8 months old.

Ds is like this. He is on neocate as of last week, is on axid and rice cereal in bottle. It was helping but then it took forever for him to eat a bottle so I lowered the amount of rice cereal and he became uncomfortable again. So I increased it again as of this morning. Dr said i can also do Maalox or mylanta. If that doesn't work in a week to call him again. So frustrated with this.

Did you try a larger nipple? We use doctor browns and need to use a level 3. We have to give her a few breaks but it is better than the level 2- it would take an hour to finish which was hard bc her twin brother was crying waiting for me to feed him. The level 3 is a little fast but with breaks she does ok.

This exactly! Make sure to also hold her upright and still for at least 20 min after feeding.

Although now it feels like it will never get better, i will!
I have twins also and only 1 DD had reflux and would projectile vomit 4-5 bottles a day. At 22 months, she has the appetite of a teenage boy and she eats well!
At around 6 months, we were able to drop the zantac. I kept her on the allimentum to be safe because like you said, it's very scary to see them choke like that :(
Looking back now, it all goes so fast. But back then, it felt like it dragged on forever.

GL!!

It does get better. My dd stopped choking and spitting up out of her nose around 4 mo. I took her off mess at 5 mo. I'm sorry. I know it's the scariest thing when they do that. :(

They might also need to up her meds as she gains.

Re: Moms of reflux babies- help!

DD did the same thing, starting at 2-3 weeks. It started as one vomit per week, then 2-3 per week, then daily.

We thought it was a protein allergy at first so we started her on Alimentum. Ped later thought reflux could be the problem so we began zantac 2x per day and that helped! After about 2 weeks, no more vomit episodes and minimal spit up.

At 6 months, Ped said we should take her off Alimentum because it was likely never a protein issue and any hypoallergenic formula is very thin and that would only make reflux worse.

Eventually (after some trial and error) she ended up on regular Enfamil and did great! She was on Zantac until she started on milk at 12 months but has been fine since (now almost 18m)

Are they SURE she has a milk protein allergy? If not, the thin fomula is making the reflux worse. Try to thicken the formula a bit.
