Toddler Sleep Help!

Sorry this might be long.

DS will be 3 in July. He was a great sleeper up until about 6 months ago. We used to put him in his crib, say good night, shut the door and that was it. About 6 months ago he started wanting us to sit in a chair in his room until he fell asleep. He also started waking a few times a week in the night but would go right back to sleep. Well 3 months ago we moved him to a big boy bed and now it is worse!

We have to sit at the edge of the bed until he falls asleep and he wakes up 1 to 2 times a night. He will get out of bed and come in my room. He usually wakes between 12:30 and 1:30 am and I but him back to bed and then again around 5 am. I let him in my bed at 5 so we can get back to sleep.

I tried putting him to bed and walking out being stern and saying its bed time but he is out of bed before I can even walk out of the room. I am just so tired I don't know what to do. I just finally got DS 2 to sleep pretty well and now DS 1's sleep is a mess. Any advice would be great.

We tried a nightlight that projects Mater and Lightening McQueen onto the ceiling but it didn't help.

We went through something similar with my 2 year old. The best advice I got was to be consistent and after you put your child to bed, leave the room, if he gets up don't talk to him just walk him back to bed. Some nights we did that for over an hour, but it got better. I think it gets worse before it gets better. It's important not to talk because the point is to not give any attention (good or bad).
