Dad finds out that his missing son is alive during live television interview.
12-year-old Charlie Bothuell went missing on June 14th. After police conducted an 11-day search, he was found alive yesterday, safe and sound in his dad's basement.
His dad found out last night in the middle of a live interview with Nancy Grace.
It's hard to watch Grace grill the father like a cartoon villain instead of congratulating him, but she clearly assumes a deception has taken place. "How could your son be alive in your basement?" Bothuell, speechless at first, stays on camera and searches his brain for a plausible explanation instead of, say, leaving to go to his son or demanding an opportunity to speak to him. "I have no idea," he says.
Grace pushes him further, "Did you check your basement?" "I checked my basement," he says. "The FBI checked my basement. The police checked my basement. My wife checked my basement. I've been down there several times. We've all been checking."
Grace isn't buying it. "I don't know why you guys would have reported him missing," she presses. "All our viewers have been on the lookout for him."
It would never occur to me to attack a man who has clearly just been through a trauma, but it is strange that Bothuell is seemingly unsurprised at being asked to defend himself.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig finds things strange as well. "I've never seen anything quite like this,"
Craig told CNN affiliate WXYZ-TV. "We found him barricaded in the basement, behind boxes and a large five-gallon drum." said Craig. "There's no way he could have erected this makeshift area of concealment."
There are reports that the father may be investigated for child abuse, and that the boy's step-mother might have helped him hide.
Certainly something very strange has happened, and Nancy Grace is not having it.

OMG, turn off the cameras and let the poor man get on the phone with the police. It's disgusting that they put him in front of the cameras to tell him this and then question him this way.
I read the story this morning but didn't see the video. It is a bizarre story and who knows what details may come out but I just can't believe the media these days.

It really is strange and I get that everyone reacts to things differently. I don't know, wouldn't you get up rip your mic off and go home and say "I gotta go to my son?" I can't tell if he was acting or genuinely relieved his son was found alive.
As of right now I've lost all faith in human beings due to that Monster Justin Ross - who knows.

I just watched the video..I really hate to say this but it looked like acting to me. very strange reaction IMO.

The father failed a lie detector test and the step mother refused to take one.

I saw this on the morning news and had to rewind it twice to see his reaction again.
It seems like piss poor acting.

I'm watching this now on Nancy Grace....the guy is a bad actor. He knew where his kid was and put him in the basement after the FBI checked it or something. Ridiculous, and that poor kid!

DETROIT (WJBK) - Child Protective Services has removed 12-year-old Charlie Bothuell's half-siblings from the household, Fox 2 has learned. The child's stepmother, Monique Dillard-Bothuell, is in custody.
Detroit police are currently investigating the possibility of child abuse after Charlie, who had been reported missing for 11 days, was found alive in the basement of his father, Charlie Bothuell IV, and stepmother's townhome in Detroit.
His father says he had no knowledge his son was down there and that he and authorities had searched that location multiple times.
Child Protective Services released the boy to his biological mother Thursday after he received medical treatment and after he was interviewed by psychiatrists and investigators. The extent of the boy's injuries, if any, has not been made known.
Young Charlie reportedly told investigators his stepmother fed him and helped him hide, and that he was in the basement for the entire 11 days he was reported missing. Maintenance workers at the housing complex tell Fox 2 they believe that is not possible.
Inside the Bothuell family's townhouse police found traces of blood in young Charlie's room and on his clothes, and a PVC pipe the father admitted he used to discipline his son was taken as evidence.
Fox 2's Taryn Asher reports investigators are testing the blood found in the townhome to see if it belongs to the other two children that lived in the house, Charlie's half-brother and half-sister.
Those two children are the ones that have been removed from the home.

Saw this on nancy grace and GMA. This is very suspect. The dad seemed acting. It also has come out that they made that poor kid take 4000 steps on the elliptical each day. Recently he hadn't done it and the stepmom said you will have your dad to answer to.
He was also barricaded in the basement behind a 50lb barrel that he couldn't have moved himself. There was also food down there with him, a whole chicken. Someone was bringing food to him. Shadyyyyyyyy.

What a weird story.. something def. fishy.
and Im sorry but if someone told me my kid was found and i didnt know i dont care who was interviewing me I would have ran out of there so fast to see with my own eyes. Looks like poor acting to me.

I forget the name of the book, but I believe there's a very religious based book on how to discipline your children and I'm pretty sure is advocates the use if a PVC pipe. I'm pretty sure there was another case that people were using methods from this book and "accidentally" killed their kid.
