vegan?

any moms out there who were vegan when pregnant? If so please let me know if there were any special things you needed to go or take? ie supplements.

I am new to eating vegan and I am ttc so I wanted a heads up.

no flames or drama please, not looking to have my mind changed about being vegan.

Congrats on being pregnant! I don't have any advice, but would double-check with your OB about what you can/can't take while being pregnant.

Re: vegan?

I went pretty much vegan towards the middle/end of my pregnancy. I still ate eggs every once in awhile, but rarely.

I was able to eat more than enough protein - my concern was mainly Iron and B12 - I took an iron supplement starting at 20 weeks, I have always been borderline anemic anyway.

B12 I had in my prenatal.

ETA - I ate only very limited amounts of soy products -, but that was just my own comfort level, my dr. didn't express concern when I told him I was changing my diet.

I do not eat meat or dairy but do eat eggs and fish. I took my regular prematals. Had no issues. Dd is 8 months I still bf and am raising her the same way. Drs have no problem with it.

Not vegan but vegetarian. My doc told me to just keep doing what I was doing. Bc I unfortunately had to go through fertility treatments I did extensive blood work, all different kinds, so I knew where I stood in terms of any deficiencies. So I would suggest a full blood panel to make sure you're good. As long as you get enough protein and vitamins through food you're prob good!

Welcome to Veganville! Chat Icon

The only things you may be lacking from being vegan are protein and B12 because it comes from animal sources. Just make sure to get both of those. I think with the prenatal you will pretty much cover everything else.

I was Vegan going into my pregnancy, but about 2 months in I started craving eggs! I also worked in a bakery, so that didn't help me to keep on track. I was able to stay away from meat for the most part.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions or need food recommendations!

I'm not vegan, just vegetarian, but I don't eat eggs or drink milk normally, but when I was pregnant I couldn't stop drinking milk. It became really difficult to keep up my regular diet. I didn't crave or desire meat or fish in anyway, but I also was completely turned off by my normal sources of protein so it got tricky at times. I used My Fitness Pal to track all my meals and make sure I was taking in enough protein.
I also had a severe iron deficiency that started in my 2nd trimester. So I just began an iron supplement.

You should take a vitamin b12 supplement as there aren't any great plant based b12 sources. It should be part of a standard pre natal vitamin. Also, make sure you are getting enough iron. This is quite doable, you just need to meal plan carefully. Of course, prenatals have iron. you might also want to consider a vegan omega 3 supplemet. A big pitfall to avoid is to replacing the meat with junk food like white bread or soy icecream. Base all your meals around plants, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, quinoa, avocado, some tempeh, some whole grains etc. Good luck !
