Those who delivered at LIJ

Did anyone only have a hep lock instead of a full
IV? I'd prefer not to have the iv, but when I reminded my doctor today I was told that they prefer the iv and it will depend on the nurse I have that day. Just trying to see if anyone has btdt

The hep lock or saline lock is the part that had the catheter that will go in your vein. It can connect to IV tubing for fluids or medication can get pushed through it.

I think its just standard practice to get an IV (hep lock) put it and then if need be they will use it to connect to fluids. I know they put one in when I was admitted and then it was used for pitocin and then for fluids after my csection. When they removed the fluids I still had the lock for a day or 2.

Did you deliver at LIJ? My dr said that the fluids would be continuous-I'm fine with the hep lock and understand that they're pretty set on that, I was just hoping to avoid all the iv fluids during labor

I didn't deliver at LIJ, but I asked about it on their tour. They said they do hep locks, but it's up to the doctor. Consider writing out a birth plan, going over it with your doctor, and bringing it when you deliver. It doesn't have to be long - just include things that are important to you.
I tried for no IV, but I was throwing up so they gave it to keep me hydrated.

I delivered at the Katz Womens Hospital which is part of LIJ. You need 1 bag of fluids or 1L before the epidural if you want to have that so unless you are not having an epidural you might be able to go without fluids. However if you labor for long they might not want you to get dehydrated.

Didn't deliver at LIJ but I'd assume if you say no they can't force you.

you can't be forced to have an IV of fluids. you have rights as a patient. that being said, you should discuss with your doctor the specific instances that it would be wise for you to accept the fluids so you know ahead of time and can be educated about your decision.

problems arise when hospitals won't allow you anything but ice chips when you're laboring. you'll get dehydrated and that's why they push the fluids. this is one of the most physically demanding acts you will ever go through in your life. you need water, if not some kind of sports drink, throughout labor. i sipped on gatorade mixed with water throughout my labor to not only stay hydrated but also get some calories in me when i didn't want to eat. if you're not going to take the IV of fluids you should come prepared with things to drink (even if it's against their policy).

eta: i'm speaking from the perspective of having a non medicated labor and delivery. i don't know what the recommendations are for epidurals and how that may change your ability to stay hydrated on your own

I don't know the answer to your question, but I did deliver there.

Just curious, why would you not want fluids?

I didn't deliver at LIJ but I didn't want an IV because I wanted to be as unrestricted as possible and able to move about freely.

I also didn't want to be restricted in my movements from an IV. I also felt really strongly about not having unnecessary interventions (IV fluids are an intervention) during a very natural process.

This wasn't really a part of my decision, but there have also been studies showing that IV fluids given during the labor can artificially increase baby's birth weight from the fluid intake, and thus creates a more dramatic weight loss in the baby. Baby's weight loss is closely monitored and this all can cause snowball effects with breastfeeding...

Thanks girls!

I don't want them for many of the reasons listed below-I've had a very easy, healthy pregnancy, and I hope to do a fully natural I medicated birth. I also feel that having a continuous line allows hem to administer other things I may not want.

I do have Gatorade ready to go with my stuff for the hospital, and I don't plan on getting an epidural.

I had a natural birth and didn't have an IV, and nobody gave me a hard time. But my time in the hospital from arrival to baby in arms was SUPER fast--I'm not sure if they would have tried to administer anything had it taken several hours.

I suggest you labor at home as long as humanely possible, which will cut down on their time and opportunity to ask about intervention.

Also, if you trust your OB and he/she knows your wishes, they should be able to be honest with you about if you need fluids for your own safety while they check in on you.

I delivered at katz Lij last month and I was not even allowed to have water - only ice chips. So I'm not certain they will be ok if they see you having Gatorade

Def labor at home as long as possible
Good luck!

I plan on staying home as long as I physically can.

I'm interested to see how this ice thing goes..I have the world's worst aversion to ice. Can't stand the stuff Chat Icon

I know rules have a place in society but this one is worth breaking I think.

I would love to see a nurse grab a Gatorade bottle out of a laboring woman's mouth. They can make the rules but would they really enforce that one? Are they going to punish you if you sip Gatorade? Tell you to go home? Just have your DH pour it into those hospital plastic pitchers and they'll be none the wiser.
