What pool temp?
I only go in the pool if it's bathtub temperature.  Our heater broke last year and bc it was so hot the pool stayed pretty warm. This year I haven't even stepped in our pool yet bc I'm such a wimp when it comes to cold pools. LOL
I know kids are much more resilient, but I like to go in when the boys wanna go in and feel bad we haven't gone in yet this summer.
If you have a heater do you turn it on every weekend? I feel like we're always running around and then finally get to the backyard they just want to play on the swingset or water shooters, etc. We usually have friends over too so the kids all play together. Must make it a goal to go in at least twice! Still early in the season though. Temp is reading 72 now. Brrrr!

I am like you. If that pool is under 85 I feel it's cold.
Actually I am ok once i get in, but I hate that shock of cold when first getting in.
This weekend I had to run my heater for 5 hours to get the pool up to 79 degrees. It was cold the night before and that morning and my pool loses heat like crazy.
At 79 degrees I was like- WAHHHHH, trying to get in, but once I got wet I felt great.
We only run the heater when we know we are going in. But like I said it takes a LONG time to heat my pool.
In the heart of summer, when we get a stretch of HOT days and nights we don't have to run it at all.

we have an electric heat pump that is set on 85 currently, it goes on if needed, if/when filter is on.
We also have a solar cover, so yesterday the cover got it to 88. I don't think the heater will be on much with the way the cover it working. We are sure to cover it over night to keep the heat in.
Do you have a solar cover???

My ILs have an in-ground pool and DH has been in there with DS the past two weekends at a temp of 78... which is WAYYY too cold for me!! I need at least 82.
72 would feel like ice to me... no way in hell I'd be in there!

My IL's do. We don't have a solar cover. We need to switch to gas to heat the pool too. I think it was propane I want to say and the weekend we used it when we first moved cost us a fortune.

We tried a solar cover but ended up with mustard algae from using it. We would leave it on in the day when we were working and apparently sun needs to hit the pool to prevent the algae growth. Too dark of a place and bam it grew wild. It was a mess.
Plus the cover was a HUGE PIA to roll on and off. So heavy.
We ended up trashing it. It stinks because we lose a lot of heat but we couldn't deal with it.

We never had issued will algae from it. I guess we were lucky? So far so good for us too. The filer is on from 10-6 each day and we check the chemicals weekly. We also have salt, not sure if that helps.

Yeah not sure why but ours was SOOO hard to reel on and off. Maybe we didn't have a good reel system who knows.
We use a mineral purifyer in our pool (Pool Frog) It's pretty much like a big brita filter for the pool and uses 80% less chlorine to sanitize it. It normally keeps the pool sparkling and never once do i need to shock or algecide the whole season. So that is why we were surprised at the algae that year.
The guy at the pool store told us the cover and lack of sunlight was the culprit.
Your salt system might be the reason you have better luck- I wonder if the salt is better at preventing the algae growth.
