Birthday Party invite UPDATE

No sure where to share, but thought considering all the birthday questions, you ladies might appreciate this gem:

Got a text message last night (at 10:45 pm). It was a birthday party invitation for a boy's 5th birthday party on july 6th. (we've been to all his birthdays, our 3 1/2 year-old DS like playing with him, so we were excited)

and then we read the invitation:

Hockey birthday at an ice rink on July 6th at 7:30 PM in Staten Island.

Is it me, or is that the weirdest birthday ever?

Neither DH or I ice skate. DS will not go out there without us. We checked the place out, and it literally has NOTHING else. It's just an ice rink. if we go, we probably won't get home until 10:30 the earliest. If DS does not nap that day, by 7:30 he'll be a living nightmare.

On the other hand, these are DH's best friends. (they were best man and best woman at our wedding). DS loves playing with their son.

Would you go?

Edited to add: we live in queens (middle village)

Thanks for your reply ladies.
DH spoke to the mom, and she insists there will be other activities. she wasn't very specific and everything she mentioned sounds like it's going to take place on the ice.

DH and I got into a huge fight about it. Still not speaking.
I said we should decline, due to timing and I don't think DS will enjoy.
He said we should go and DS will be fine. Claims he'll go out on the ice with him if necessary (not going to happen). He also claims I am putting my own feelings on it and he doens't want DS to miss out because of that.

So I guess we're going...Chat Icon

I think a text is a little weird and I probably wouldn't do a 5 year olds party on a Sunday night at 7:30 but I'm guessing maybe this was the only time the ice rink was available? If they are friends and you know your DS would have fun, I would still take him though. It's only one day. Now if you live off of or far from SI, I might reconsider. You'll be hitting all that Sunday night traffic coming home from the Jersey Shore. Especially after the holiday weekend!

eta: I just saw you said these are DHs best friends. In that case, yes I think I would make the effort if that is the case. Like I said, it's one day.

Birthday Party invite

I think the time is the only strange thing about it.

Ice skating parties are popular and I wouldn't think one in the summer was strange. no more than say a indoor pool party in the winter.

I would try but any party during a holiday weekend is tough for me.

Re: Birthday Party invite

I would think the time was the only one available near the kids birthday.

Ice skating parties are very popular.

We are going to an evening party for a 5 year old too, but it begins at 6:45. It is still late, but what ever, it is on a weekend.

As for the text, did she just book it and want to let you know to keep the date free?

Do you have any family members who can skate that could assist your DC?

Sounds like a last minute book (and fun).

Tough because you don't skate at all... call
these good friends & address that concern.

As for the timing, the rink was probably only free then. Should be OK... hopefully your kid naps in the car.

Re: Birthday Party invite

Isn't that a Sunday night? The Sunday after a long Fourth of July weekend?

Another weird thing! lol.

My 5 year old goes to bed at 8:00. Weekends I'm fine with keeping him up but Sunday at 7:30 I'd have to decline. That's too late for a 5 yr old bday party.

Re: Birthday Party invite

Invite via text - weird.

5th bday party date - Sunday - ok

5th bday party time - 7:30pm - way too late and I have a 5yo.

Hockey party - ok

We've been invited to ice skating, hockey and ice hockey parties.

Do you live on SI? The traffic on the holiday weekend will probably be pretty bad - I would decline if you don't live there and have to travel far.

i don't. we live in queens. so we would be coming back around 10pm with bridge and BQE traffic.

I know this, the practical side of me is screaming NO!!!!, but DH says we should go. He won't listen to reason because he thinks my judgment is clouded.

Re: Birthday Party invite UPDATE

My son turned 5 in April and desperatley wanted a Hockey related party - There was NO way I was comfortable putting 25 kids out on an ice rink to skate. I know if I got that invite I would have been annoyed I had to get out there and skate too KWIM?
So I found a place to do floor hockey and the kids had a blast.

The summer date, I assume is b/c of his birthday ......and the ice time is probably b/c it's the only time they could get at the rink.
For my BEST friends, yes, I agree with your DH, you suck it up and you go, regardless of inconvenience. - For a classmate, that would have been an auto decline !!

I think you're being kind of dramatic. None of it is weird to me besides the 7:30 start time for a 5 year old. I feel like you expect her son's party to be more suited to YOUR son's age, schedule, interests, location. Just go and leave a little early citing your son's bed time.

I agree. You don't have to stay for the entire time. Go for an hour and leave if your son is not having a good time.

I agree, this caused a fight so bad between you and DH that you aren't speaking? Is there more to the story you aren't telling? I also don't get why you think a hockey party is so weird, hockey isn't only a winter thing - the NHL plays Oct through June.

ETA: I would also ask the person who texted you if the date is correct, maybe they meant to text July 5th instead?

There is more to the story, and maybe it is affecting me, but i also know the drive home will be horrendous and waking DS up for daycare next morning will be very difficult.

i also don't know how to dress ds. i assume ice skating rinks are cold, but how cold? will he be ok in just long sweats and a long sleeve t? Or does he need a jacket? what about gloves/hat? (don't mock. i honestly don't know)

as for the wring day, not likely- they will have a family only celebration day of his birthday (july 5th) and you are not allowed to celebrate a birthday before the actual day, so sunday it is.
